What guided her towards this path was when she was 7, and she contracted a polio, which left her right foot and leg noticeably weak. Another thing that guided her into this direction was just before Dorothea reached her teen years, her parents divorced. Dorothea grew to blame the separation on her father 

Lange, who never showed much interest in academics in high school decided to pursue photography as her profession.

1918 Lange lived a life in San Francisco running a successful portrait studio. She had a husband and 2 sons.

Early 1930’s Lange changed her focus when she met a university professor. They both left their spouses to be with each other. The next 5 years they traveled together documenting rural hardships and they encountered the FSA.

• In Lange’s final years, she got hired by the Office of War information (OWI) to photograph the internment of Japanese Americans. In 1945, she was employed again by the OWI, this time to document the San Francisco conference that created the United Nations.
