• Her mother was not in good mental health, and her father was an abusive alcoholic.• When their family was in Worcester they had 2 more children.

• Dorothea had to take care of her younger siblings.

At the age of 54, Dorothea had traveled half of the United States and Europe inspecting institutions, jails, etc. for mistreatment.

Dorothea Dix accomplished more in one 15 year span of her life than most individuals did in a lifetime.
