DOROTA PAWIŁOWSKAartist’s statement

Even a few years after the graduation from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw I have been feeling torn between being a graphic designer and being an artist. In the course of my studies I fell for “the funnies” visual language, which was taught as a tool for designing. On the other hand I couldn’t have imagined being limited to rules so I fought for artistic freedom in the field of painting or printmaking. That is whybesides my main diploma project which focused on the series of posters I made and extra projectdevoted to painting. Immediately after the graduation I regarded that dualism of my artistic soul as a sign of my artistic immaturity.

Since the moment when I rented an atelier I have kept on returning to the experiments with traditional techniques. I have resigned from the permanent employment as a graphic designer so that to concentrate on painting, drawing and other media. I have also gained a new point of view as I finally have understood that the Polish Poster School is not based on strict rules and it is natural that I have been under its strong influence. Freedom of creation, expressionism, irony, playful jest or a witty point, taught at the Academy, have eventually become for me my natural way of expressing myself.

I can openly state now that the poster visual language has become for me a universal one and that it has no limitations or limits. A letter and typography are just a pretext for an artistic game losing its fundamental function. Works balancing between a poster, an actual graphic illustration and modernist printmaking are the outcome of such an attitude. I try to look for universal motives searching in my own experience or memories. I am interested not only in beauty but also in ugliness, pain and a trashy side of life or the contrast between those values as this is the basis for a jest, a surprise which are the quintessence of art for me.
