DORKING FCOFFICIAL PROGRAMME 2015/16
DORKING V ASH UNITEDCOMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE: DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY, 31st OCTOBER 2015
£1.00
Welcome to Dorking FC and The New Defence, our home ground for the
2015/16 season.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Sale and his team at Horley Town FC for their hospitality and I hope that you enjoy your visit with us today.
This is our second and final season here at The New Defence, ahead of our exciting move back to our old home in Meadowbank, which will be transformed into our iconic new
home. As we continue our development at Dorking FC the new leadership team are very excited about this, their second season. Our vision remains focused on continuing to
rebuild Dorking FC as a respected football club but also as a social enterprise by re-establishing Dorking FC as an iconic club at the heart of its rural community.
The football management team have worked tirelessly over the summer and I would like to thank them for all their efforts. A big welcome back to our squad of players plus a number of exciting new players joining us. We have some bright young talent coming through our
club and once again I expect we will see a good number of our U18’s appearing for our first team.
A huge thanks go to my fellow Board members, all of our volunteer helpers, our football management team and of course our loyal supporters. We hope you will follow us on our journey, grassroots football is important to us all, and Dorking FC hopes to make its own
contribution to the benefit of everyone.
To keep up to date with developments and news at DFC join us on Twitter @dorkingfc and on facebook.com/dorkingfc.

DORKING FC 0 - 1 BEDFONT & FELTHAM FCCOMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE: DIVISON ONE
24/10/15
A superb and dominant Dorking performance went unrewarded when bad luck in front of goal and a cruel twist in the dying minutes of the game saw the Chicks fall to their first league defeat for more than two months.
Facing a strong Bedfont and Feltham side unbeaten in the league this season, it was the Chicks who made the stronger start, creating chance after chance throughout the first half.
Opportunities for Glynn Stephens’ side flowed from the ninth minute onwards, when a wide ball from Sanchez Harris set right back Zach Powell free down the wing to deliver an inviting cross that just eluded Glen Wright. Harris then had a chance of his own when Kieran Lunn forced keeper Johnson-Freeman to rush his clearance, but the effort went agonisingly over the cross bar.
With Dorking in total control of the game, Lunn delivered a great ball into the box to meet the head of the advancing Wright, but the finish was wide of the post. It was Wright who had the best chance to break the deadlock on 22 minutes as he rounded the keeper but, with the goal at his mercy, his feet seemed to get stuck in the turf.
Encouraged rather than disheartened by the miss, the Chicks continued to press on with talisman Jimmy Brazil forcing the keeper into a good save before Huxley showed his skill from dead ball situations with a terrific free kick going just wide of the upright.
Needing to get ja foothold in the game, Bedfont and Feltham made a change at half time, bringing on Yusef Jimacale at right back, and to their credit they started to show why they are yet to lose a league game this season. They rose to the challenge Dorking were still supplying through the likes of Lunn, who went close just five minutes into the second half and, as the Chicks began visibly to tire, the visitors started to create chances of their own.
Having been a virtual spectator for the first half, Andrew Osei in the Dorking goal was now producing some fine saves, the best coming as he tipped a powerful Jacob Lamb volley over the bar.
In an unlucky final ten minutes, Dorking saw the industrious Wright retire from the game, before also losing both full backs, Powell and John Jupp to injury and ,despite another great save from Osei, Bedfont managed to get round the back of the Chicks’ defence to give Michael Campbell an empty goal to score into on 89 minutes.
It was a cruel way to deny Dorking what would have been a well-deserved point from an entertaining match. But manager Glynn Stephens knows he has built a side full of team spirit and is confident his Chicks will take the positives from the game as they welcome Ash United to the New Defence for this afternoon’s second consecutive home league fixture.

MEADOWBANK UPDATE: NO. 2‘LOVE FOOTBALL, LOVE YOUR
COMMUNITY, JOIN DORKING FC!
Dorking FC is looking for new volunteers to join the running of thecommunity-based club in a new Management Committee, as it gets in shape for a return home to the new Meadowbank football ground in 2016.
Work will start at the end of this month on the rebuilding of the Chicks’ traditional home at Meadowbank. In just under a year, Dorking FC will return to the town at the heart of a new, state-of-the-art stadium, providing an exciting sports facility for the whole community. Over a thousand local youth players will join the club at the new Meadowbank, taking advantage of the all-weather artificial pitch for weekly training sessions. Surrey FA have also announced that they are moving their headquarters to the site, making Dorking’s home ground the centre of football in the county.
Plans for the exciting move home start now. Dorking FC is a not-for-profit organisation, run on an entirely voluntary basis and in accordance with true amateur sport values, in the interests of the community. In preparation for next season, the club is now recruiting to some key, voluntary posts on a new Management Committee.
Chairman Grant Ashley says, “Since taking over and rescuing Dorking FC last year, the club has been run by a Board of just five volunteer Directors. The foundations for survival have been laid and, with the return to acompletely rebuilt Meadowbank ground, this is now one of the mostexciting times and opportunities in the club’s 135 year history. So the time is right for us to open up the running of the club to local people in a new Management Committee.”
Grant goes on to explain, “We want as many local people as possible who love football and love their community to get involved in establishing this great new sporting project for the town. If we all work together to get this right, we’ll have a fantastic new Dorking football facility in Meadowbank park, used by thousands of local people, bringing a huge boost to the town centre, and with a thriving community-orientated football club at its heart.”
Dorking FC is looking for local people to join the new Voluntary Management Committee in three key roles:• Fundraising Manager• Club Supporters and Membership Manager• Youth and Community Engagement Manager
In addition, there are opportunities for people who would like to help out in any other way to join the club in non-specific assistant roles.
Fundraising ManagerWorking both alone and with others, the Fundraising Manager will help develop new sources of revenue, from traditional sponsorship and advertising by local business to creative fundraising ideas and projects.
Club Supporters and Membership ManagerAs the work continues at Meadowbank and interest builds throughout 2016 in the community facility and Dorking FC’s return, the Club Supporters and Membership Manager will tap into that local enthusiasm to engage with local people who might wish to follow the football club and make use of its facilities at Meadowbank - building a new, thriving membership and supporter base for the town’s historic football club.
Youth and Community Engagement ManagerWith hundred of players from at least seven youth football clubs, local schools and other community groups all expected to make use of Meadowbank alongside Dorking FC, the Youth and Community Engagement Manager will work to liaise with other users and community groups, ensuring constructive and productive relationships. We aim to work together to maximise the potential not just for all the voluntary groups involved in the new stadium, but for the whole of Dorking, in what is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real difference for local football, Meadowbank park, community activity in the town centre, local business and the entire town.
If you would like to know more about these voluntary posts or are interested in helping run Dorking FC in any other capacity in one of the biggest years in the club’s long history, dating back to 1880, then please email your contact details to [email protected] and the Chairman, Grant Ashley, will get back to you to discuss the plans.
Love football? Love Dorking? Then why not get involved!

THE HISTORY OF DORKING FCFootball has been played in Dorking since the 1830’s. It was first played in the street, and an annual ‘match’ took place every Shrove Tuesday in
Dorking’s High Street. Those on the east of St Martin’s were one team known as the East-enders and those to the West, on the opposing team, were the Westenders. The “pitch” extended all the way from London Bridge Road to the Washway Bridge in Station Road.
The match was preceded by a procession led by a band and men dressed as women collecting donations and carry-ing a cross inscribed with words “kick away both Whig and Tory, wind and water, Dork-ing’s glory”. On the left of the cross was a red, white, and blue ball representing the Union, on the top a gold ball representing the winners, and on the right a red and green ball representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking. Celebra-tions went on well into the evening when pre‐match collections were first distributed to shopkeepers for window damage and the balance con-sumed in beer at The Sun.
This tradition continued until 1905 when it was outlawed after ten years of suppression, and by which time Association Football had defined formal
rules for the game in 1863 (dic-tating kicking only) when rugby went one way with hands, and “soccer” (abbreviation for Asso-ciation Football) went the other with feet. By now Dorking Foot-ball Club had formed in 1880, establishing itself as the second oldest football club in
Surrey and one of the oldest in the country. The club originally played in green and red striped shirts with white shorts – the three colours representing the famous Dorking cockerel.
The cockerel was also very apparent as the main feature of the club’s badge, and hence the club soon became affec-tionately known as “the Chicks”.
The team first played at a site on West Bank before moving to a pitch off Fairfield Drive and then later to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. The Chicks didn’t move to its current location at Meadowbank until 1953 when their success demanded better facilities and a new ground was built on an old dumpsite.
The new Meadowbank had a capacity of 5000 and a stand that accommodated 700. The ground was opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous and was inaugurated by an exhibition match against Corin-thian Casuals. Dorking’s most successful FA Cup run followed in 1955 when they beat Folkestone 3 – 1 in front of a home crowd of more than 4000 before going out in the next
round to local rivals Epsom. In the 1950s annual spectator club membership stood at more than 1000.
ASH UNITED FC:CLUB HISTORY
Ash United Football Club was founded in 1911 and recently celebrated 100 years of football. Ash started playing their first competitive matches at Ash Common. Ash United soon became well established in the Surrey Intermediate League, winning every honour
possible. After the Second World War Ash United restructured and in the 1947/48 seasons they had the most successful season in their short history, winning the League
Championship and four-cup competitions.
Ash United had to wait almost twenty years for their next successful campaign. During the 1966/67 seasons Ash United dominated the Surrey Intermediate Premier “A” League, winning the title with only two points being dropped out of a possible fifty two. As the points suggest, Ash United’s achievements included a long unbeaten record with 121 goals for and only 19 against. Not to be outdone the reserve team also had a terrific
season. They won the Division “A” title and scored an amazing 137 goals in only 26 games, an average of 5 per game and some incredible scores. With the first team and the reserves doing well this gave the club a good squad of players, all competing for first team places. In 1968 Ash United won promotion to the Surrey Senior League, and in their first season they finished runners up, and also finished as runners-up in the cup. This successful start in the Surrey Senior League came to an abrupt end in 1971 when Ash United were forced to change grounds, this meant theyUnited managed to find a new permanent home with the co-operation of the local council at Shawfield Road, which remains their home to date. Having a permanent home meant that Ash United United were re-admitted to the Surrey
Senior League.
During the late ‘70’s Ash United had several successful seasons, in the 1977/78 season Ash United won the Charity Cup defeating Dorking 2-1 in the final, the following season Ash United finish runners-up in the newly named Combined Counties League as well as reaching the finals of the Philips Football Floodlighting Competition. It took Ash United several years before they managed to win the Combined Counties League, which they
eventually won in the 1981/82 seasons; Ash United also finished runners-up in the Concours Trophy and the George Allen Trophy during that year. The 1984/85 seasons saw Ash United getting through to the quarterfinals of the Surrey Senior Cup as well as being runners-up in the Concours Trophy again. During the 1985/86 season Ash United had a creditable run in the FA Vase, followed by a great league performance in 1986/87. Ash
United won the League for the second time under the management of Chris Penny. Ash United produced their best run in the FA Vase in 1993/94 by reaching the second round
only failing to go further by losing to Littlehampton in a replay.
The 1996/1997 season saw improvements in the facilities at Shawfield Road, most notably was the installation of floodlights and further improvements to the changing rooms,
dugouts, and fencing. The 1997/98 seasons was Ash United’s best for several years, with the new manager Jamie Horton bringing his considerable experience to good effect. He
has brought together a squad of players that won the Challenge Cup and the Fair Play Trophy in his first season as player/manager. The team also created a new league and club
record with 29 games unbeaten in league and cup, which included a run of 21 straight wins.
The following season Jamie formed a side that took the League title by a massive 13 points. His team also won the Aldershot Senior Cup beating Fleet Town and reached the last 32 of the FA Vase before losing to the Holders & winners Tiverton Town in front of a
record crowd at Shawfield Road. Jamie Horton had a second stint as manager during the 2001/2002. He then took Ash United to their highest points total for a season when they reached 100 but it still wasn’t good enough to take the title and they finished runners-up
to AFC Wallingford. They however did regain the Aldershot Senior Cup beating 3 RSME Regiment and also reached the last 32 of the FA Vase before losing to Tow Law Town.
There was more silverware for the club as the Reserves won the Division One Title.
The 2004 to 2006 seasons saw ex Aldershot Town player Stuart Udal take charge of the team. Great progress was made with Ash United finishing 3rd in the League. The Reserve
team won the Reserve Premier Cup beating Sandhurst Town.
After 18 years’ service as a player with Ash United Paul Bonner took over the manager’s position in the 2008-09 season with Mattie Everard ably assisting him. Paul is now in
his fifth season off being in charge & has yet to find the special touch to win silverware but has produced some good entertaining football team, even last season which was a struggle from start to finish. Unfortunately, Paul resigned from his position at the end of
the 2012-2013 campaign.
Alan Reed was appointed Manager for the 2013/2014 season and after a disappointing season in 2013/2014, we were relegated into Division 1 of the Combined Counties League.
Alan Reed continued to be manager until the end of December 2014, when he was replaced by Daniel Bishop.
We finished mid table in the 2014/2015 Division 1 season.
Ash United currently also have an U16’s, U15’s, U10’s and Men’s Sunday, playing under the Ash United FC banner.
