A word from Our President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wow! Where do I begin this month? It has been a really busy one.

Wasn’t Edyta Sitar amazing? All the lovely quilts she shared really showcased her cre-

ativity. I have come to the decision that she just doesn’t sleep. Each quilt was so gor-

geous that I want to make all of them. And, if you were one of the lucky ones to have

taken her workshop, you really learned so much. Edyta was very organized and made

sure to spend time with each and every lady in the class. She shared all her tips and

tricks with us, which were numerous. She even shared Grandma Sitar’s binding tip

with us to help eliminate the bulk in corners.

As I am writing this, it is Saturday (Holy Saturday in the church calendar) and I am

thinking of all the people in Paris who would have attended Easter Mass at Notre Dame

tomorrow. It was so sad to watch this lovely Cathedral burn but I am so grateful that

the art works and relics, especially the Crown of Thorns, were able to be saved. When

things like this happen, it really makes us cherish the heirlooms we have that were

passed down through the generations. Linens are so delicate and hard to keep in pris-

tine condition. I have a beautiful Irish Lace tablecloth that my great-grandmother

made over 140 years ago. It is very fragile and I am so very careful with it. The same

goes for the quilts we are making for our families. We are hoping that, with proper

care, they will last generations. Yet, we want them also to be enjoyed and loved. I am

the first quilt maker in my family and they all seem to appreciate and love what I make

for them. With each quilt, I provide care instructions so they are washed and stored

properly. Will they all do it…. I hope so.

In May I am off again to Big Bear with a wonderful group of friends on our semi-

annual quilt retreat. We sew, laugh, eat and have a great week together. Of course, we

also manage to visit a few quilt shops and find fabric or notions that we just can’t live

without. We all come home with projects done and lots more in our heads for the next

retreat. If you haven’t gone on a quilt retreat and the opportunity arises, jump on it.

Nothing beats a week spent with a group of friends doing what you all love.

May Workshop

The Whig Rose With Deborah Tirico

May 9, 2019

Our May workshop will feature Deborah Tirico, a fabulous wool applique designer and teacher. We are so fortunate to

have her with us. Deborah’s applique designs are very much in the Bal-timore Album style. They are beautiful and traditional. She uses felted

wool from Weeks Dye Works. It is just scrumptious. Deborah will be providing a required kit for workshop attendees. She’ll include all the

wool, threads, needles and patterns needed for the class. The cost for the kit is $55.

We still have spots available for the workshop and I’m hoping you’ll join us for a really great day. Drop by the workshop table where you can

sign up for Deborah’s class and take a look at our future workshops as well. I look forward to meeting and getting to know you all. As I like to

quote: “The love of sewing is our common thread.”

If you have questions or I can help you in any way, just shoot me an email or give me a call.

CUTTING EDGE AWARD

In April the honorees were Barbara Purks and Janet

Haynes.

For years, Barbara has been the face of Komen within our

guild. Every month she sits at a back table fundraising for Komen. She always has

some little ditty to raffle off and the ladies flock to her table to see what she is offering

each month.

Janet Haynes stepped up and took over our guild UFO Challenge and is doing an out-

standing job. Each month she has a lovely tote to raffle off. And, she makes these totes

herself.

Thank you ladies for volunteering to help make our guild as wonderful as it is.

Philanthropy

Several things to share this month. Again our thanks for all your work for us. In April we sent 38 quilts to St Joseph’s cancer center. We received 27 kids quilts which will be stored for the Marine’s picnic. And we collected $44 for Komen. (Also want to add that Janine D’Anna won the Komen opportunity this month.) And we collected 73 pillowcases. We gave 30 to the Foster Parents Auxiliary and are preparing 43 of those for Ryan’s Cases for Smiles.

Ryan’s Cases for Smiles (RCS) is more work than we anticipated. And this is where you can help! The pillowcases are for kids at Kaiser Hospital, Anaheim. They need to be washed in Dreft, ironed, and put into 1 quart plastic bags. Then brought to San Clemente where the coordinator lives. Jane and I have washed and ironed 100 of them and plan to bring them and bags to Sew Day in May where we will ask volunteers to help us package them. That is one way you can help. Another way is to volunteer to do any one of the steps to prepare these cases for RCS. Sew, wash, iron, package, drive. Just let us know by calling me. You are such a generous group and I know you will step up to see this done. Just think of those kids smiles when they see those happy, colorful pillowcases!

Next Sew Day is May 2. Then we will take a recess until September 5. We can work on our philanthropy projects at home during that time and catch up on our other sewing projects as well.

Just received notice that the Marine’s picnic is planned for August 30th. We will have more information for our participation for this event as we get closer. Also re-minding you that the annual “back to school” drive for the Marines in the 3-1 will be at the August guild meeting. We can bring our school related gifts to that meet-ing.

Thank you again for all you do to make Philanthropy work.

SEWING ROOM/HOME TOUR AND LUNCHEON

JUNE 22, 2019

Have you purchased your tickets yet?? They are available at the guild meetings or by

contacting Christi Kolisnyk at [email protected] to get yours. This is going to

be such a fun event and the homes to be toured are wonderful. Each lady has a special

room they use to do all their creating and their homes will be decorated with their

quilts. At the luncheon, a lovely luncheon will be served and there will be opportunities

to take chances on some beautiful baskets plus viewing of our challenge quilts. Each at-

tendee will also receive a thank you gift from the guild in appreciation of you coming

out and joining us.

We are still looking for donations for our opportunity baskets. Please contact Phyllis

Morrow at [email protected] to donate.

Our next committee meeting is Monday, April 29 at my home at 10 am. Come join us!!

SEATING AT GUILD MEETINGS

I am sure you all noticed that we have added extra chairs to the room for meetings. We are growing in leaps and bounds and need to be sure to fill in each

seat in each row to be able to accommodate every-one who needs a seat. Please be sure to occupy all the seats in a row and not leave empty seats. We are averaging 180 members each month at our meetings. Thanks for your help.

Page 7 ORANGE GROVE QUILTERS GUILD BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Complete up to five blocks. Return the completed block(s) to the Block-of-the-Month table at the designated

month and, for each block you make, submit your name to the drawing held at the end of the meeting.

Winner(s) takes home the blocks to use as you like.

Thank you to all who participated in the April Block of the Month, “The H-Block”. The blocks were divided

amongst three winners: Margot Taub, Nancy Fujioka and Jenny Cassell. Congratulations, ladies!

The block to be submitted at the May meeting is called “Around the Garden”. See the website or newsletter

for complete instructions.

June’s block is a simple nine patch. Choose three fabrics: white

for A; light or medium blue for B and a

darker blue for C. You may use solid or prints. For white prints,

please use white on white. For the blue prints,

please use white on blue or blue on blue with the blue always

being predominate in the print. Please use a good

from the darker blue (C), cut two 2 ½” squares.

2. Arrange the squares according to the diagram and sew into rows.

3. Press the seams of row 1 and 3 to the left and the middle row to the right.

WAYS AND MEANS - BASKETS Basket Winners: Sherry Linclon and Ruth Cox

WAYS AND MEANS – BASKETS

There will be two baskets in May, full of wonderful things generously donated by

members and chosen from the “almost a quilting store” in my garage. Thank you

members!

We will continue our three month drawing for a gorgeous small quilt donated by

Mary Pavlovich. This is a rendering of a pattern by last month’s lecture/teacher,

Edyta Sitar. Fabulous! The drawing will take place at the June meeting. Tickets are

12 for $5.00 or two for $1.00. You have to write your name on the ticket.

For those of you who are lucky enough to win at our drawings, share the wealth

with your friends.

Just a reminder: make sure you deposit your tickets by the end of the break. Also,

as a courtesy to speakers, please purchase tickets before the meeting starts (We try

to set up approximately one hour before) and during the break. Thank you for your

cooperation.

Hoping to see you at our table and

thank you all for your support!

Well, I thought I would get out of the meeting without any lost items, but that didn’t

happen. I have a black fleece Columbia zippered jacket someone left behind. If it is

yours, I will have it with me at the May guild meeting. You can claim it then or call

me to arrange a time for you to pick it up at my home.
