ANIL RAMESH KAMBLE

Boy , Age: 11Would like to become: A Teacher

With DSS Since : Pre-primary Current Level : 5th Std.Location : Community Slum near DRDO , Pashan

Anil says, “I am grateful to DSS for not only helping me get admitted to school, but also providing me transport to reach school. I like to read books and will try my best to attend school regularly”.

Anil’s family like most others in this community belong to Karnataka. His parents are illiterate and work as casual labourers and live in tin sheds. Anil has a job in a local shop before and after school – the shop keeper pays him Rs.1500/-pm. This money is used for educating his elder brother in the village. Anil has to study in the mornings before going to the shop. Sometimes, he studies in the shop. He takes help from his school teachers for his studies. He is willing to give up his job if it interferes with his school attendance. He feels bad he has no time to play with his friends in the evenings.

SONI SHANKAR MHETRE

Girl , Age: 13Would like to become: A Doctor

With DSS Since : Pre-primary Current Level : 8th Std.Location : Community Slum at Shivajinagar

Soni says, “I am grateful to DSS helping me get admitted to school and providing me transport to reach school. I like to read books and enjoy drawing and painting and dancing too”. Soni won a prize for her dance in Std. 7.

Soni’s parents lived in a community consisting mainly of rag-pickers and therefore among unclean surroundings and people who did not value education . Her mother is a housemaid and her father works as a plumber. When DSS started working in this community, there were several challenges to inculcate habits of cleanliness and hygiene among the children and parents. When the authorities asked them to shift their hutments, Soni’s family relocated to Sangamwadi and now live in a proper room. Soni’s parents would now like her to study and achieve her goal of becoming a Doctor.

With DSS Since : Pre-primary Current Level : 10th Std.Location : Road Construction site at Senapati Bapat Road

Viresh says, “I am grateful to DSS helping me get admitted to school and providing me transport to reach school.”In his Std 9 examination he scored 62% and is interested in sports.

His parents desire that he and his sister who is in Std.12 complete their graduation and take up good jobs. They are grateful to DSS for enrolling them in schools and providing support. Viresh is keen on doing a course in computer science after Std.12 and has joined a class to help him with his Std.10 curriculum. Although Marathi is not his mother tongue, he is more comfortable speaking Marathi than Kannada.

The Problem : Literacy inaccessible

Exploding Construction Industry - More than 1500 sites in Pune - Approx 80 children ( 1-14 yrs) / site - Frequent Migration of parents: -often illiterate and un-registered for any benefits

Children often engaged in - housework - care of younger children - sometimes labor

Remote Sites - lack of transport facilities - difficult to access schools RESULT : Many children remain out of the formal education

system .

Door Step School– Empowering Women

Mrs. SANGEETA HULAWALE

With DSS Since : 1999 (Joined as book fairy)Current position : Area Coordinator

Sangeeta has grown within the organisation from a book fairy to an office coordinator . Has also been involved in the training team of Reading Class program. Initially a shy and withdrawn lady has now learned to drive a scooter on Pune roads. Many a times she handles the desk of Door Step School in various exhibitions in and outside Pune. She is currently pursuing her graduation in Arts.

““I always wanted to be a teacher but I could not pursue my dreams due to some constraints. Some of my dreams were fulfilled when I worked as a book fairy for Door Step School. My job has imparted me with a lot of confidence in myself. The exposure to various kinds of people because of my job has made me a better person.”

Mrs. Sushma Ranwade

With DSS Since : 2000 (Joined as book fairy)Current position : Field Coordinator

“Though I had passed my 10th standard, I had never even read newspaper regularly. Seeing so many books in one place was itself a treat for me. In 2004 when promoted to the post of Supervisor I faced another challenge that of venturing out in different parts of the city independently. But this helped in boosting my confidence. Ample support from my colleagues and family has helped me in my journey from a book fairy to a Coordinator. The inspiration to complete my graduation in Arts was also courtesy my colleagues. I can now also drive a two wheeler on the city streets.”
