What is ?A door is a moving structure used to block off, and allow access to , an entrance to or within an enclosed space, such as a building or vehicle . Doors normally consist of a panel that swings on hinges on the edge , but there are also doors that slide or spin inside of a space .

Design and StylesThere are many kinds of doors, with different purposes . The most common type is the single- leaf door, which consists of a single rigid panel that fills the doorway . There are many variations on this basic design , such as the double-leaf door or double door and french windows .

Battened DoorA simple wooden door consisting of vertical boards and horizontal battens with the diagonal members, known as the braces. Also called Ledged and Braced Doors.

The braces are generally 100mm to 150 m wide and 30 mm thick. These braces give rigidity to the door and hence the doors of this type are useful for wide openings. The braces are usually housed in the ledges. It should be noted that the braces must slope upwards from the hanging side as they have to work in compression and not in tension.

The braces are fully nailed to each board similar to the battens. The boards are normal tongue and grooved floor boarding, that have been "Veed" on a spindle moulder or with a router. If the braces run down away from the door, then the weight of the door is helping to open the joints which allows the door to sag. Typically, these doors are hung on band and gudgeon hinges or "Tee" hinges.

Hollow core doors are doors which are essentially hollow in the inside , save for some construction paper or sellular cardboard arranged in a honeycomb pattern .

Doors are constructed with hollow cores as a light, cost effective alternative to solid core doors .

Type of doors constructed using hollow core doors

As interior doors

By far the most common hollow core door type is the conventional hinged doors , although sliding doors are also very commonly hollow cored .

As exterior doors

Hollow core doors can easily be used as exterior doors, although the panelling on the exterior of the door needs to provide adequate strength and protection from the elements .

Page 6: Door Designs- Building Materials and Construction

PropertiesSecurity – As same as a solid core door

Weatherproofing – Unless they are designed for external use , they won’t offer much in the way of weatherproofing .

Soundproofing – Sound travels easily through it .

Cost – Cheaper than their solid counter parts .

Weight – Less in weaighter than solid core doors .

Thermal Insulation – They only provide basic thermal insulation unless they are specifically designed with a purose in mind .

Construction

Hollow core door normally feature a timber frame made out of hardwood or pine , along with solid ‘lock blocks ‘on either side of the door to allow a handle and other door furniture to be mounted on either side of the door . The core of the door is filled either with waste paper or a cardboard lattice or honeycomb . The outside of the door is then finished with panelling , which helps to determine how the door looks , how well it will insulate and how strong it is .

SOLID

CORE

DOOR

Solid Core Doors Solid core doors is one of the common material for hinged doors . It’s sturdiness . Beauty and customisability all make this material a popular choice for front and rear entrances , as well as for interior doors .It is relatively easy to install .

ConstructionIn some solid core doors , layers of various thicknesses and grades of plywood are glued together and cut to size to form a core for two sheets of the chosen wood , which are glued over the top with edges finished in a matching wood . In others, the core consists of solid particleboard over which the wood veneer is placed . Others still contain a core of solid pine , which is first laminated and then veneered .

Properties Security – These doors are difficult to kick down . They are highly strong .

Weatherproofing – It could be used extremely when it is weatherproofed .

Soundproofing – This varies based on the core used .

Cost – Wood is relatively inexpensive in comparison to other materials due to its abundance . Weight – Solid core timber doors don’t weigh a great deal and it depends on the core filling .

Thermal Insulation –It will not translate heat or cold easily . It is quite an effective insulator .

Comparison between SOLID and HOLLOW core

Heat Insulationon

Hollow Core – The construction of these doors retain some warmth, but the air pockets inside will allow more heat to pass through .

Solid Core – As a solid piece of material , this type of door is batter at insulating against heat loss .

Sound Insulation

Hollow Core – The honeycomb design inside the door disrupts sound waves and breaks them up , muffling sound reasonably well .

Solid Core – A thicker, denser solid door will muffle sound more effectively than a hollow core door.

Security

Hollow Core – It easily breaks down

Solid Core – It is more stronger than hollow core doors and could withstand more punishment .

Louvred doorIt has a fixed or movable wooden fins which permits open ventilation while preserving privacy and preventing the passage of light to the interior . They are generally used for wardrobes and drying rooms where security is of less importance .It provides good ventillation .

In this type of doors , the shutters are provided with louvers , either fully or partly . The louvers are arranged at such an inclination that the horizontal vision is obstructed .There are two types : Fixed and Movable louvered doors The louvered doors will allow free passage of air when closed and at the same time, maintain sufficient privacy .

G L A S S D O O R It is the most common material used in windows and doors. Today, in addition to ordinary clear glass, most manufacturers offer a variety of high-performance and decorative options.

Recent introductions to the market are low-maintenance and self-cleaning glasses. Glass manufacturers have recently introduced new coatings that can limit dirt build-up on the exterior and reduce the need for cleaning windows on the outside.

Glass pieces are fixed in door panels to admit light inside the room. Large openings in doors fitted with thick glass panels impart a beautiful appearance. The glass may be of various types - frosted glass , beaded glass , ribbed glass.

Glass-paneled doors need to be well built, especially if they are exterior doors. Individual glass panes are often referred to as "lights" (or "lites"). Be sure to get gas-filled thermal glass panes for an exterior door, and make sure the glass is well sealed against the stiles and rails.

UPVC* also known as rigid PVC can be used to construct solid, lightweight doors, but it's more commonly used as a strong, cost effective framing material for things like glass doors.

Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is the wonder material from the plastic family and its use as door shutter is becoming popular because it provides total protection against corrosion, moisture, termites and chemicals. The PVC door shutters are made from multi- cavity hollow chamber sections and they are manufactured on computer aided machines under stringent quality control. They provide better thermal insulation and may be considered as idea for air- conditioned and heated rooms.

Framed and Frameless Doors Framed Doors

A more rigid and alternative assembly includes a frame around the outer edge of the door held together at the corners with mortise and tender door joints . The framed door can be further

improved by the rebetting the edge of the frame rails and setting the paneling into the grooves 10 to 20mm .

Frameless Doors Very simple doors can be made from a timber of number of vertical boards held secure with horizontal

rails and a diagonal base brace installed in such a position that it is in compulsion .These are inexpensive doors and entirely satisfactory for many buildings .

Vision DoorsGlass apertures can be introduced to a door specification for reasons of safety , aesthetics or to pursuit the transfer of light . Vision panels can be selected from a range of popular configurations shown below , or can be produced to order for a bespoke product .

The objective of vision panel is to allow a person to see another person approaching in the other direction in time to avoid a collision .The extent of visibility zone faciliates people of all heights or those using a wheelchair .
