In October 2008, an expedition organisedby ICRISAT and the Global Crop DiversityTrust will be set from Hyderabad, AndhraPradesh, India to the Island Spitsbergennear Longyearbyen, depositing 20000samples of 5 varieties of Indian seeds(Sorghum, peanuts...). Cultivated,identified, counted, and dried, the seedsconserved in the Norvegian vaultrepresent the most comprehensive anddiverse collection of food crop seedsbeing held anywhere in the world.

The vault consists of three highly securerooms sitting at the end of a 125-metretunnel blasted out of a mountain onNorway's Svalbard archipelago. Theseeds will be stored at minus 18 degreesCelsius (minus 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit)and sealed in specially-designed four-plyfoil packages.The opening of the seed vault is part of anunprecedented effort to protect theplanet's rapidly diminishing biodiversity

saving plant life from cataclysmic event.
