when it comes to certain important nutrients.” – from the American Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

“92 percent of us are deficient in one or more nutrients at the Recommended [Dietary] Allowance (RDA) level.”

We are too fat … and at the same time, we are lacking needed nutrients!

Background Information

• Vitamins & minerals are nutrients that are required by all plants & animals in order to live.

• Vitamins help“regulate chemical activities” in the body that make energy and create tissue.• Humans need a wide variety of foods to get all

the nutrients needed to live.Fieldhouse, Paul. "Background Essay." Issues: Understanding Controversy and Society. ABC-CLIO, 2013. Web. 10 Mar. 2013."vitamin." Background …

• There are 13 known vitamins that are divided into two categories: water soluble and fat soluble.

• Vitamins A, E, and B12 are the only vitamins stored in the body. For this reason, the vitamin supply needs to be replenished daily.

• People are vitamin deficient if they do not take in this required amount or if something stops their body’s absorption of the vitamins.

Background …

• Vitamin D can be produced by the body (via sunlight on skin) but almost all other vitamins have to be ingested daily.

• In the USA, the Recommended Daily Allowances for vitamins & minerals are formulated by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council (NAS/NRC).

Teens are not getting the nutrition they need from their diets.

• A nutritional survey was given to 4,452 middle school students in 2003. Results showed:

Less than 1/5 knew how much fruits & veggies they were supposed to eat every day.

Less than ¼ ate the necessary amount of fruits and veggies every day.

Less than ½ ate breakfast every day.

Teens are not getting the nutrition they need from their diets.

In another survey of students aged 15-18

7% admitted to never drinking milk. Those who did drink milk drank

very little of it. Most drank 1.5 liters of a “fizzy

drink” in a week. 1/5 had not eaten any fruit in a 7

day period.

• Results from other studies show:• Teens often consider dairy products to be

“babyish” and therefore do not get needed calcium.

• Teen girls were found to take in 40% below the recommended amount of iron needed by their bodies.

• 30% of teen girls were shown to be iron deficient.

Teens are not getting the nutrition they need from their diets.

Vitamins have a role in disease prevention.

• The amount of calcium a person consumes during adolescence “predicts adult bone mass.” Lower bone mass can mean a greater risk of fractures in the future!

• Studies have shown women who had low levels of iron as teenagers have “poorer heart and bone health in later life.”

• Low iron can result in anemia, “which can cause fatigue, palpitations and lightheadedness”.

• Recent studies show that low levels of Vitamin D can cause many different health problems.

• Low amounts of B12, “a nutrient which helps to maintain a healthy myelin sheath (the insulation part of every nerve cell)” has been found to cause problems with neurologic disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

• Low amounts of B3 can create skin problems such as those seen on the right.

Why I Chose This Topic

• I was recently told that I have a Vitamin D deficiency and that I must start to take vitamins. This awareness made me want to start researching what kind of vitamins I should start to take. I picked this topic because vitamins have been on my mind!
