Executive Summary Over the past few years, organizations have used a variety of tools and technologies to enable basic mobile device management (MDM) and essential apps like email and calendar. But those capabilities are inadequate for companies that want to move beyond the basics and transform their business processes by securely moving apps and data to the cloud. For AirWatch customers, this means they should start evaluating leading enterprise mobility management (EMM) platforms like MobileIron in order to achieve their mobile transformation goals. Our platform is 100% focused on building today’s modern enterprise architecture, which is quickly shifting core business processes away from legacy technologies and standardizing on mobile devices and cloud services.

Modern, mobile transformation requires an EMM provider that can:

• Securely support any mobile app or cloud service, on any device, running any OS, app, or cloud service.

• Keep mobile enterprise data and applications secure.

• Integrate with the existing infrastructure without impacting end-user productivity.

• Be a trusted advisor who can help plan, design, and deploy a comprehensive strategy with experienced customer support services.

MobileIron is a proven leader in EMM innovation and mobile security for the modern enterprise. In addition to being the enterprise choice for secure mobility, we rank in the top five for all categories of the Gartner Critical Capabilities for High-Security Mobility Management. We have also been positioned as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management Suites for six consecutive years. Our platform is built from the ground up to address evolving mobility and cloud requirements. Plus, MobileIron integrates with leading technology providers, so customers aren’t forced into proprietary technology stacks that don’t meet their needs. We ensure our customers can choose the best technologies that fit their environment.

This paper highlights the key advantages of MobileIron over AirWatch. It’s designed to help current AirWatch customers better understand how MobileIron can address some of the limitations of the AirWatch platform by meeting enterprise needs today and down the road.

Go Beyond the Limits of AirWatchIn every enterprise, one thing is certain: many of the cutting-edge mobile technologies that are popular today will be obsolete within the next decade. That’s why one of the biggest IT challenges is building a security infrastructure that can meet today’s business requirements without locking companies into inflexible and shortsighted management tools and methodologies.

Supporting a continuously evolving mobile and cloud services platform requires an EMM provider like MobileIron who can deliver the security infrastructure every business needs. MobileIron is ideal for customers who need a stable, secure, and highly scalable EMM platform that supports a broad ecosystem of apps and cloud services. Just as important, MobileIron integrates with a variety of enterprise IT systems and applications via standards-based — not proprietary — mechanisms, so we can focus on meeting customer needs instead of complex integration issues like AirWatch.

While AirWatch was a satisfactory MDM tool for basic use cases in the past, mobile enterprises now require more than just simple device management. They need to give users secure yet simplified access to an evolving app and cloud ecosystem. The VMware acquisition of AirWatch and subsequent Dell acquisition of EMC (VMware’s majority shareholder) has changed the business and product direction to be more focused on integrating products and “selling the stack,” rather than enabling true mobile transformation. As a result, customers with growing mobile and cloud security challenges may feel uncertain about whether AirWatch can deliver on key modern enterprise security requirements such as:

1. Industry-leading Focus and Expertise. Supporting the broad range of today’s enterprise mobility requirements requires an EMM platform and industry leadership that is 100% focused on meeting business needs. It also requires extensive expertise and a global customer services network that understands the real mobility and cloud services security challenges customers face across every industry, in any region of the world.

“After evaluating AirWatch and MobileIron, it was clear that MobileIron could meet our needs the best. MobileIron Cloud delivered everything we needed and more. Not only can IT quickly set up all of the policies and configurations for each device, employees can securely access all of the apps and business content they need to start working within minutes of turning on their new devices.”

-Levi Johnstone, Head of Technology Engineering Edward Rose and Sons

2. Defense-grade Security. In recent years, malware has increasingly targeted mobile operating systems with the intent of rooting or jailbreaking the device to make it vulnerable to further exploits such as spyware and communication interception. However, despite the rise in high-profile mobile malware attacks, anti-malware adoption continues to remain flat with a global adoption rate of less than 5%. With more sensitive business data residing on more mobile devices than ever before, defense-grade security measures are needed to keep data such as personal identity and competitive strategy information from falling into the wrong hands. That’s why organizations need a mobile and cloud security platform that provides strong encryption and allows admins to selectively wipe devices, disable shadow IT, and prevent data exfiltration to cloud services — while still enabling a highly productive mobile user experience.

3. Scalable, Integrated Platform. The consumerization of IT means that most enterprise users now have multiple devices — including phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches and more — to access data from a vast and growing ecosystem of mobile apps and cloud services. The rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT) is pushing the market for devices even further. That’s why a scalable and fully integrated platform that’s built from the ground up to support mobile and cloud security requirements is more important than ever. It needs to do more than just scale to the number of devices in the enterprise. It needs the flexibility to support multiple device types, form factors, and operating systems, as well as protect app and cloud access on all devices across the enterprise. An EMM provider also needs to be innovative, forward-thinking, and integrate with other market-leading technologies. Relying on a vendor’s proprietary stack doesn’t provide enough flexibility to ensure enterprises can easily adapt to mobile technology and security challenges down the road.

4. Mobile Innovation. The adoption of mobile and cloud technologies is driving massive changes in organizations around the world. Companies everywhere are trying to get ahead instead of just constantly reacting to change. The fact is, flexible and agile organizations that can quickly adopt modern enterprise technologies and platforms will be the ones to drive greater innovation and accelerate productivity to maintain a competitive edge. The choice of platform is absolutely essential to this kind of business transformation. Organizations need a proven leader in mobile innovation who can fully support modern mobile device management, cloud security, and multi-OS desktop management to meet both day-to-day and future business requirements on mobile.

MobileIron is Built to Secure The Modern EnterpriseMobileIron offers a secure, enterprise-ready platform that addresses a broad range of mobile device and application management requirements, such as defense-grade security, massive scalability, and proven mobile innovation and leadership. Here’s why AirWatch customers should take a closer look at MobileIron.

Ensure Success with Focused Mobile and Cloud Security ExpertiseMobile and cloud technology is evolving faster than any technology that has come before it. That’s why it’s especially important to have an EMM partner like MobileIron who is totally focused on the changing needs of the modern enterprise. We have a clear strategic vision and expertise to help all of our customers meet their ambitious enterprise mobility goals.

Since AirWatch was acquired by VMware, key leaders, including the AirWatch founders, have left the company. This has left the direction of the AirWatch subsidiary in the hands of VMware veterans who have limited experience in the mobile security market. As a result, AirWatch is investing heavily in integration with WorkspaceONE and VMware’s datacenter offerings. Even though the industry is rapidly shifting from virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to native mobile apps, devices, and cloud services, we do not believe that VMware (and AirWatch) are truly focused to meet mobile requirements like mobile app-to-cloud security. In addition, we believe that VMware’s support and professional services teams do not have sufficient in-depth experience with AirWatch products.

“We realized early on that we would need a powerful ally to accomplish our aggressive mobility goals. We needed a solution that would allow us to move beyond device management to security for applications and content. It was clear that MobileIron and reseller Mobco truly understand how to make companies successful with mobile.”

- Kalman Tiboldi, Chief Business Innovation Officer TVH Group

Mobile App-to-Cloud Security Reduce the threat of data loss with advanced security across the entire mobile and cloud infrastructure. Typically, all a user has to do is enter their credentials on any device, app, or cloud service to access data from the cloud — which puts enterprise data at tremendous risk. MobileIron is the only EMM vendor that provides unique access control capabilities to solve these mobile app-to-cloud security challenges.

MobileIron Access is a cloud security solution that allows IT admins to define granular cloud access control policies based on device posture, application authorization, and user identity. It helps bridge the gap between mobile and cloud security and provides better insight into how users are accessing enterprise cloud services. Access uses a standards-based approach that helps quickly detect and remediate mobile app-to-cloud threats such as:

• Unsanctioned cloud app: When a user connects an unauthorized third-party cloud service to a corporate cloud service like Salesforce, this puts corporate data at tremendous risk of exfiltration to a malicious cloud source.

• Unmanaged app: This is an IT-approved app, such as Salesforce, Concur, Box, or Dropbox, that a user downloads from a personal app store instead of the enterprise app store. This means the app is unmanaged, and therefore unsecured by IT.

With MobileIron, if a user attempts to access cloud apps via a non-compliant device or insecure app, he is presented with a customized remediation screen that walks him through the steps necessary to bring the device or app into compliance. No help desk intervention is required. As of this writing, AirWatch cannot block these types of risky apps.

MobileIron continually checks device posture to ensure that devices accessing company apps and data are fully compliant with corporate security policies. If a device fails compliance checks, IT can restrict access until the security posture is remediated. MobileIron EMM also allows IT to securely distribute apps like Office 365 through the MobileIron Apps@Work enterprise app store. This helps to ensure Office 365 data remains secure on the device or in motion to Microsoft Cloud. Only trusted apps and devices can access Office 365 data when it’s secured by MobileIron.

Secure Email. Don’t compromise between email security and employee productivity. Allow employees to choose between secure native email or a high-security containerized option that delivers the experience employees want with the data protection enterprises require. MobileIron supports certificate-based authentication to simplify user access. It also provides conditional access based on the device’s security posture. That means no more worrying about data in third-party servers or service outages. IT can also wipe all email data if the device is ever lost or stolen. Best of all, these capabilities can be expanded to Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, and IBM Notes.

Secure Mobile Apps. Protect app data on any device or network. MobileIron offers critical app security capabilities such as cross-platform, government-grade encryption of app data at rest and in motion. It also supports the AppConfig community’s standards-based tools and best practices that enable a more consistent, open, and simple way to configure and secure mobile enterprise apps.

Organizations can also take advantage of the enhanced security capabilities of Samsung KNOX as well as the MobileIron AppConnect framework. AppConnect offers an extensive ecosystem with more than 150 third-party and in-house apps, so this solution is ideal for organizations that need to deploy wrapped apps with support for single sign-on (SSO), app-level access control, and app-specific configurations. It also enables secure access through DLP enforcement for corporate intranet and file-sharing without requiring a VPN. AppConnect-enabled apps can also be deployed to the secure workspace of the Android for Work app.

Secure Per-app VPN Connectivity. IT can empower users to securely connect to authorized cloud services and access internal web apps and intranet sites without having to manage VPN connectivity. Our appliance-based architecture allows organizations to have one gateway for all devices, which is ideal for a long-term mobility solution. This means there is no need to manage a Windows gateway for Android per-app VPN or Linux gateways for iOS. This type of architectural complexity can lead to higher design, deployment, and maintenance costs, and ultimately increase TCO.

Secure and Seamless User Authentication. Protect against modern threats by going beyond basic SSO. MobileIron is the first EMM provider to launch secure SSO, which is a context-sensitive, certificate-based, identity provider-neutral approach to cloud authentication. Users enjoy the benefits of password-less access to enterprise services while IT ensures that only authorized users and apps can connect to backend resources.

Just as important, IT can end the frustration of user account lockouts an reduce help requests from employees who forget their passwords. MobileIron makes user authentication easy with digital certificates, Kerberos, secure SSO, and robust support for public key infrastructure (PKI). Digital certificates provide strong authentication without the need for passwords so employees can instantly access their devices, apps, and data without having to remember and type in cumbersome passwords.

Visual Privacy Policy. MobileIron supports visual privacy to allow employees to see exactly which types of data are visible to IT and which actions the company can take on personal or company-owned devices. This helps narrow the trust gap between employees and their companies, which can accelerate the adoption of new mobile enterprise services and BYOD programs. MobileIron has led the industry in adopting visual privacy and announced our policy a full six months before other vendors.

Transform Business with a Truly Scalable PlatformMobileIron was built from the ground up to provide a scalable, secure, and unified platform for the modern mobile enterprise. We have always been 100% focused on mobility and continue to support the unique requirements of enterprises that are moving their business apps and data to the cloud today. Our OS-agnostic platform fully supports app, device, and data security while ensuring a seamless and productive user experience.

In addition to supporting new technology requirements and integrating with industry-leading vendors, MobileIron is also massively scalable. Our MobileIron Cloud solution can include more than a million users on a cluster. MobileIron Core can support up to 100,000 users on a single server. Our appliance-based architecture can be deployed in minutes without the need for third-party servers, licensing, or intervention from our professional services team to deploy software updates.

Support Future Requirements with Innovative EMMMobile and cloud technologies are evolving faster than ever before. The devices and apps that emerge in a few years will be dramatically different from the ones used today — and enterprises will be expected to support those technologies. To meet future requirements, organizations need a partner who is already thinking of the future, and whose platform is built to handle rapid growth and changing technology requirements. A vendor that is instead focused on their preexisting stack investment is unlikely to have these mobile security and flexibility goals as their product priority. For example, VMware’s proprietary integration between WorkspaceONE, VMware Identity Manager, and AirWatch MDM actually lock customers into the VMware stack and could prevent them from using technologies they may already have in their environment.

With 45 modern mobile security patents and counting, MobileIron is a mobile and cloud security leader with a proven track record of innovation and scalability. With MobileIron Access, IT can reduce the risk of data loss from mobile app-to-cloud security threats by establishing a data boundary that prevents users from accessing enterprise cloud services on unsecured devices, apps, or browsers. With MobileIron Bridge, we are also helping customers unify their security and management processes across multi-OS mobile and desktop platforms including Windows 10 and macOS. These are just two of the most recent examples of how MobileIron is delivering innovative solutions to help customers leverage evolving technologies to transform their business operations.

It’s Time for a Better Mobile and Cloud Security StrategyOrganizations don’t have to settle for a vendor that is more focused on integrating and selling proprietary solutions than on meeting mobile and cloud security requirements. Now is the time for AirWatch customers to evaluate a new EMM solution that can meet current business needs and scale to support future enterprise mobility requirements. See how MobileIron can provide the in-depth focus and expertise to deliver a highly productive user experience, world-class innovation and scalability, and experienced technology leadership organizations can count on.
