School that more and more students everyyear choose to study here, but cannottake full advantage of what the Law Clinichas to offer: the present facilities are indesperate need of expansion andupdating.

The popular and relevant MootingProgramme is similarly hampered by itslack of any proper ‘home’ – anappropriate, authentic and dedicatedspace in which the formal activity ofmooting can be properly carried out, soas to deliver its learning and teachingobjectives most effectively.

The challenge therefore, is to continue toinnovate through the development of new, exciting strands of practical work, and tomake these learning opportunitiesavailable to more students. To achieve this,

A pioneer of clinical legaleducation in the UK since the1970s, Kent Law School hasgrown dramatically over thelast ten years and is now oneof the largest departments inthe University, with about1600 students across threecampuses, including over 260postgraduates.

Recently, the School has enjoyed asustained period of success across thefull range of its activities. An outstandingresult in the 2008 Research AssessmentExercise places the School sixth in the UKin terms of the quality of its research. Italso has an excellent teaching record withan innovative curriculum; this has resultedin exceptional National Student Surveysatisfaction ratings.

The excellence of the education and thesocial and practical benefit to societyprovided by the Law School aredemonstrated by two intrinsic features ofstudying law at Kent: the Law Clinic andthe Mooting Programme. Both are criticalto the development of the well-roundedlaw graduate.

The School has always emphasised thestudy of law in its social context and withregard to issues of social justice, and oneof the finest expressions of this approachis the Kent Law Clinic. This delivers a first-class and exciting legal education toundergraduates through the provision of afree legal service to the community. However, such is the success of the

Student Media CentreA £500,000 fundraising campaign isunderway to equip the University of Kentwith a new Student Media Centreboosting Kent Union’s standing as one ofthe most innovative student unions in thecountry and giving students new skills.

Since the opening of the University, KentUnion has provided students with manyways to get involved in a range of mediaopportunities. InQuire, previously KREDand InCant, gives students theopportunity to be part of the research, design and development of their ownnewspaper. Similarly CSRfm a student-led FM radio station which replacedUKCR in 2007 engages students with allaspects of running a radio station fromtechnical setup to presenting a show.

Whilst all volunteers currently do theirbest with the resources available, facilities needed for students to gainexperience in the field of media are notup to standard. A purpose built StudentMedia Centre would allow students toexpand their knowledge and gain realexperience using industry levelequipment to produce traditional printand radio plus delve into the world ofdigital broadcasting, giving Kentstudents the edge in the competitivejobs market.

The donations we have madeto support current students through theKent Scholarships Campaign have comefrom a sense of gratitude for all wereceived from Kent, and an awareness ofthe far greater financial burdens thatstudents have to carry today.”

Robert Lunnon, Darwin ’96

“I really enjoyed my time at Kent studyingfor a degree in history and English andgained a huge amount from it, includinga new interest in Anglo-Saxon andmedieval history. I feel it is important toput something back and I thought thatjoining the Kent Scholarships Campaignand making a regular donation would bethe ideal way of doing this by giving otherstudents the chance to benefit in thesame way as I have.”

“Having completed my paid internship on‘Ostia, Port of Rome’, I think I can safelysay that I have come away from it withsome highly useful skills, a bit moreconfidence, and something interesting todraw upon in potential job interviews. Itwas interesting to see what is done withthe data collected by archaeologists onsite, including that collected by theexcavation team of which I was part. Thiswas a good worthwhile experience andthankfully I was able to obtain a paid jobwith Wessex Archaeology almostimmediately on completing my internship.

Lauren Figg, CLAS graduate 2009

John Beale is making a significant gift to one of our leadingarchaeologists, Luke Lavan, to fund a further excavation atOstia, the harbour city of ancient Rome. Luke is the Director ofthe Centre for Late Antique Archaeology, an internationalresearch group focusing on the study of all aspects of life in theMediterranean/ Byzantine world from c. AD 300 to c. 650, whichis broadly from the time of Constantine until the ArabConquests.

In addition to publishing the post-excavation report, this gift willalso enable Luke and his team to communicate their progressover the web. This was a fairly large excavation of 35-40 people, offering a great opportunity and experience to new graduates.

The University of Kent in AmericaThe University of Kent has a long and happy association withstudents and staff from the United States. Many alumni havedescribed their experience at Kent as “life transforming”,intellectually, culturally and socially. As a consequence, increasing numbers are committing to a Scholarship for $1millionthat will enable future generations of US students to experiencethe benefits that can only be derived from an education at Kent.A new Development and Alumni Relations Strategy for the US willbuild these relations even further. These include establishing localchapters in the US, creating a programme of regular events inthe US and much more.

We are grateful to our friends and colleagues in America for alltheir support.

Former Staff AssociationThe University’s Former Staff Association was established in July2008 at a meeting attended by over 100 former members of staff, both academic and administrative. A liaison group was formedand an active programme of events planned, including monthlylunches in Rutherford College, an annual lecture and AGM, andother activities including Cathedral tours, garden visits andconcerts.

The Former Staff Association have also taken on an active role infundraising for the new Colyer-Fergusson centre for musicperformance, raising funds from various musical activitiesincluding ‘Folk by the Pond’ at Keynes College, a concert by theLaurie Kay Trio and summer vacation choral workshops.

The University is sincerely grateful for the ongoing support of theFormer Staff Association and their commitment to supportingmusic at Kent.

The First 500 ScholarshipThe First 500 Scholarship will be funded entirely by the firststudents to study at Kent in 1965. The Scholarship has beenestablished to commemorate the University’s 50thAnniversary in 2015, as well as their own entry into Universitylife. This pioneering group have chosen to preservesomething of the spirit and advantage from the early yearsfor future generations of Kent students – the freedom to thinkand challenge; opportunities to innovate and create; and thepossibility to start working life without excessive debt.

The University is extremely grateful for the continued supportof the First 500.

Alumni fundraising – Hong Kong and China Portal21 October 2010 saw the Hong Kong launch of our flagshipHong Kong and China Portal Project. Kent has longstanding linkswith Hong Kong, and enjoys substantial relationships with HigherEducation institutions in mainland China. These connectionswith partner universities and with our alumni in the region areflourishing. This initiative aims, not only to grow our currentscholarship and hardship support for students coming to us fromHong Kong and China, but also to enhance opportunities for Kentstudents to partake in study/work placements in Hong Kong andmainland China. Equally, we are keen to foster new researchinteractions between Kent and institutions in the region, forexample in areas such as Sino-European relations. The HongKong and China Portal is a significant new fundraising project forthe University, which builds on our strong internationalrelationships and ethos, and supports the internationalisation ofboth our students and our staff.

hardship bursaries, music scholarships,Durrell Institute of Conservation andEcology (DICE) scholarships, Brusselsscholarships, the Postgraduate HistoryResearch Scholarship and a number ofbenefactor named scholarships.

Besides creating opportunities for thevery best students regardless offinancial circumstances the telephonecampaign enables a wide range ofalumni to build a relationship with theUniversity and contribute to the buildingof its reputation in the UK, Europe andInternationally.

Graduating with debt is a major concernfor many prospective students. Thesefinancial pressures can deter giftedindividuals from pursuing their ambitions. For some, only a scholarship could makethis opportunity a reality. For others, scholarships provide the motivationbehind a determination to work hard andbe the very best.

The Kent Scholarships Campaign (KSC)was launched in March, 2009 to increasethe number of scholarships on offer atKent. The KSC embraces a broad rangeof scholarships, including The AlumniPostgraduate Research Scholarship,

The University of Kent has grown from just under 500students in 1965 to a leading UK institution today with fivecampuses and close to 20,000 students.
