Dear Builders of Father Serra Church,

Thank you so very much for your donations towards the

construction of our beautiful church building! It is my honor to

finally create a memory book to recognize all who donated to the

project. Special thanks to Ruby Manning who scoured the boxes

full of archived records to find the list dated 03/21/2004 from

which this booklet was constructed. This printout might contain

only names from the second campaign. If you donated but your

name is missing from these pages, please accept our thanks even

though your name does not appear here. At this date, it would be

an insurmountable task to verify the completeness and accuracy

of the pledge report used to create this booklet. Thank you for

your indulgent understanding in this regard!

It is a relief at this stage of Forward in Faith, Fulfilling our

Mission, to close the previous church campaigns with these

belated recognitions. Do know that you contributed to a long-

lasting treasure, our beautiful Blessed Junípero Serra Church.

From Almond Grove to Parish Campus

Once the Archdiocese of Los Angeles announced that a new parish would

be established in Quartz Hill, Francis Godde and his family generously donated 20

acres for the new parish at the corner of West Avenue M and North 60th Street

West. This was a tremendous help to the founding pastor, Fr. Mariano Biasio, CSJ,

when the fledgling parish community was ready to begin building the Parish

Center. Mark Twain said, "Buy land, they're not making it anymore." Having

ample land donated was certainly a great benefit to the parish.

A great big THANK YOU goes out to the Godde Family for the gift of the

land upon which our lovely church is built!

Building Pastors

In 1987 the Archdiocese entrusted the new Quartz Hill parish to the pastoral

care of the Congregation of St. Joseph, Fathers and Brothers of St. Joseph, who had

been at Paraclete High School since 1968. The founding pastor was Fr. Mariano

Biasio, CSJ. He directed the building of the parish center which began to be used

in 1991. By the time of the building campaign for the church, Fr. Biasio had suffered

a debilitating stroke. Fr. Ernest Candelaria, CSJ was named administrator. After

a time as administrator he became the pastor. Fr. Biasio died in February 2002

when only the shell of the church was standing. The next December Cardinal

Mahony blessed the completed church.

Fr. Candelaria retired in 2008 after his 50th anniversary of priestly

ordination and his 75th birthday. He continues to be a senior parochial vicar at the

parish. He was the pastor who was the most instrumental in the building of the

church. A great debt of thanks is owed to him and his wise stewardship.

Junípero Serra, Apostle to California Patron of our Parish

When our parish was founded, Junípero Serra had not yet been beatified.

Roger Cardinal Mahony wanted to dedicate the parish to this great evangelizer,

hence the first name of the parish: Father Serra Parish. When he was beatified,

the official name was changed to Blessed Junípero Serra Parish. On January 15,

2015, Pope Francis announced on his flight from Sri Lanka to Manila that he plans

to canonize Junípero Serra when he visits the United States next September.

Accordingly, we will be renaming the parish to St. Junípero Serra Parish once he is

canonized.

His motto “Ever forward, never back” informs our current mission here at

the parish. Thank you for being part of this vibrant Catholic faith community.
