Donna North HS Opens In the Fall 2013This will be the first time in the history of DISD that

it will open with two high schools, Donna High School

(Redskins) and Donna North High School (Chiefs).

Donna ISD was founded around 1904 and began to grow

and expand through the 1900s into the 2000s. Through

time, DISD was forced to build high schools and tomove the location as demanded by growth. The high

school has moved from the corner of 11th Street and

Hestor (Moye) to the other corner in the southeast area of

Hestor and Main (LeNoir) to corner of Wood Avenue

and FM 493. Then, moved again it to where it is located

today. The district attempted to keep it a one high school

district, but the population growth continued to demand

more space until the inevitable happened. DISD has be-

    come a two

Eventually, Donna ISD outgrew its high school with

    the districts populations continued growth.

Construction reports indicate that the new high school

s now ready to accept students. Roberto F. Loredo,

DISD Superintendent says he is very optimistic

    about these district new facility.

"Donna North High School is a magnificent new

facility which I am sure the community in general

is very proud to see it become an addition to theservices available for our high school students,"

    Loredo said.

The new facility, located on North Val Verde

Road and Minnesota Rd, is was recently dedicated

recently by Cornerstone ceremony recently by

    the Masons Lodge.

Dignitaries, board members, and invited guests

    attended the ceremony.

Bernadette Caceres is the principal at this new

high school. For more information about this

school please call the districts switchboard at 956-

These conditions, can they spill to this side? Donna is only 9

A community has at least four parts to its society - the school, the city, business and the

church. Each is a distinctive part that defines daily life in the community. The school pre-

pares the future leaders, the city provides the services such as police, fire dept, and garbage

collection; business includes the doctors, the stores, HEB, Rivas, and the corner Valeros

that are beginning to appear everywhere along with taquerias and dollar stores. The church

or shall I say, churches, provide the only place where one can actually take a few moments

to reflect on all the other things that occupy daily life and to talk to God about whats going on

in your life. So whats the point here? No point. Just go to church whenever you can.

By Lupe Saenz, Editor and Publisher

We know it's June, but we are always thinking and wishing for football season

to get here. So, the other day we were reviewing a old newspaper football article

published in the Corpus Christi Caller Times by sports writer Ray Collins in De-

cember of 1966 just as the Texas high school season was about to end. What

attracted us the most was the headline, "Alfredo The Great. Donna Fullback Im-

pressed Everyone." It's an article about Donna's Alfredo Lugo who set all kinds of

records in the football field back in his high school era.

This was a Corpus Christi newspaper, mind you, and not a Valley paper. The

article includes a picture of Lugo, 1966-67 Donna Redskins running back who set

running records for the period, some of which they still stand today.

As one reads down the article about the middle of the page, the sub headline

reads: "More than 2 1/2 Miles for Sapo.' " That's over 4700 yards gained on the

football field. Has any other Redskin football player in the history of the school

gotten close to that record or has broken any of those records yet? Nobody has

been able to accumulate that amount of yardage on the field for the Redskins

ever since. Yes, this is the same Alfredo Lugo who has serves on the Donna

School Board and has done it for 15 years already. Is this still another record? We have been wanting to write a story about this great feat but every time we

asked Lugo if we could write a story about his football accomplishments he hum-

bly says, "No, Mr. Saenz. It is best that you feature someone else! I don't want

people to criticize me for the getting attention on the media." Not that he doesn't

deserve it, but because of his humble ways of life, he would rather not be the sub-

    ject.

Oh, well, we are doing this on our own anyway because Alfredo Lugo recently

retired from the PSJA School District and is now relaxing at home to begin a new

"retired" life in the community. And we sincerely believe that he deserves this rec-

ognition well . So, that is that! we hope you don't mind, Mr. Lugo. Here goes!

    ________________________________________________________________

Ive never had one like him. Hes the finest running back Ive ever been as-

sociated with. -Coach Earl Scott -

    ________________________________________________________________

The very first issue we bring up to DISD Athletics Dept about Alfredo Lugo's

football achievements is this: He wore jersey number 33 as he set all those foot-

ball records for the Redskins which have never been broken. For example, in his

freshmen year, 1963 (by the way, this is the 50th Anniversary), he "carried the

ball 165 times for 1,032 yards, scored 76 points; as a sophomore he carried 247

times for 1,339 yards and 80 points; as a junior he made 206 trips for 1,352 yards

and again scored 76 points," and during his last year on the Redskin field, "he

gained 987 yards on 127 carries and scored 70 points despite missing three

games because of a knee injury."

If you are going to calculate this, it comes out to a total of 745 carries, 4,710

yards, and 302 points or an average of 6.3 yards per carry. "Quite a record, I

    think!"

The article also quotes Coach Earl Scott who got to be the teacher and athletic

mentor for Lugo during this high school life. Ive never had one like him. Hes the

finest running back Ive ever been associated with.

Therefore, what can we do to honor this man's great contributions to the history

of Redskin football this year on his 50th Anniversary? We'd say, let's do some-

thing significant like maybe even have a ceremony this coming football season

during one of the games in the middle of the stadium and officially "retire" his No.

33 Jersey as a token of appreciation to this man who today serves the community

as member of the DISD School Board, who is a retired employee of the PSJA dis-

trict, and is lifetime member of the community of Donna? What do you say, DISD

    Athletic Dept? Lets do it.

from 1963-1966, ranking 10th on the All-Tine state list and first in Vall

and 65 under the great Earl Scott, and narrowly missed becoming thefirst area back to gain 1,000 yards in all four high school seasons.

At 5-6, 195 pounds, Lugo had a low center of gravity, incredibl

The DISD Maintenance Dept raised over $4,000 for Jacqueline

Alexis Gonzalez, a cancer patient, daughter of a district employee

who needed help with medical bills.

"We bought items to raffle to raise funds. We distributed over 90

booklets to all maintenance employees who went around the schoolcommunity on their own time selling these tickets for the special raf-

fles to help raise funds for this family in need," Frank Cuellar, Main-

    tenance Field Supervisor said.

Funds have already been distributed directly to the patient who

has been going to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for treatments. The

maintenance department has already donated close to $1000 during

the first draw to help with travel expenses and will distribute the rest

    as needed.

When asked what drove him to lead this fund raising campaignwith his workers, Cuellar said, "Personally, my wife and I wentthrough this too. Whatever money came in was appreciated. Ithelped us greatly. So now I want to pay back and do this to helpothers in return."

The idea to do this fund raiser came from people who knew the

family was in need. They brought it up to our attention and I broughtthe idea to Mr. Cantu and Mr. Bermea and put a plan of action, as awhole maintenenance TEAM effortI didnt think we could raise this much but the maintenance per-

A special presentation took place at the McQueen Complex, main

office for the DISD Maintenance Department to finish distributing the

rest of the funds to the family.

We are very grateful and appreciative of the people from the

maintenance department who went out of their way to help us with

this, a member of the family stated.

Cuellar said that they hope that they can make this a permanent

event and continuous continue raising funds for other employees

who many develop an emergency need.

We are talking to Central Office and hopes that they approve our

efforts to continue doing fund raisers for this purpose, Cuellar

    added.
