GENERAL INFORMATION

Coconut (Cocos nucifera L) is a familiar tropical plant in Indonesia. For the people,

coconut is a commodity with strategic values in the field of social , culture, and economy.

The utilization of coconut is not limited on the coconut meat alone, which is processed

into coconut milk, copra, and coconut oil. Overall , coconut possesses abundant benefits.

On this account, coconut is called "the tree of life" or "a heavenly tree".

Coconut is a member of Palmae fam ily being categorized into: (1) Ta ll Coconut, the

varieties include: Viridis (green coconut), Rubescens (red coconut) , Macrocorpu (grey

coconut) , sakarina (sweet coconut); (2) Dwarf Coconut, the varieties include: Eburnea

(ivory coconut), Regia (king coconut), Punila , Pretiosa (King Malabar coconut); and

(3) Hybrid Coconut, a cross-breed result of Tall Coconut and Dwarf Coconut wh ich is

expected to have the good nature of both parents.

COCONUT PRODUCTION Coconut is a tropical plant that is able to

grow well even in hot climate regions such

as in America, Asia, and partly Africa. Thus,

under tropical climate of Indonesia, coconut

thrives. In 2009, the total plantation area

covered 3, 79 mill ion ha spreading all over

Indonesia such as in Sumatra with acreage

of 1.236.780 ha (32 ,55%), Java (873 .879

(23%) , Sulawesi 745.425 ha (19 ,62%),

Bali , West Nusa Tenggara , East Nusa

Tenggara 297.105 ha (7 ,82%), Maluku

and Papua 368 .556 ha (9 ,7%) , and

Kal imantan 277.378 ha (7 ,30%). The

majority of coconut are managed in

people's plantation . Whereas, the minority

is managed in Government-owned

plantation and Private-owned plantation.

The distribution of coconut based on island

where it grows is shown in f igure 1.

In general , coconut trees can be found in

every province of Indonesia with production

centers spreading in several provinces

with total acreage of 100 thousand

hectares as shown in table 1. Riau and

North Sulawesi Provinces both are also

one of the processing centers of coconut

based product of which crops are exported

abroad.

PARTS OF COCONUT All parts of coconut, starting from the leaf

down until the root , are economically

potential. But coconut meat is the most

important, widely used and of highest

economic value part. Description of

coconut parts and the utilization fo llow.

The Leaf, Flower, and Trunk The trunk of mature coconut can be used

as building material, furniture, emergency

bridge, ship framework, and firewood. The

old and dry rod is highly resistant against

termites. The wood of coconut tree to be

made furn iture can be shaved unti l the

surface is smooth and shows enticing The flower clusters, called mayang (the

texture . actual common name for all palmae

The dry leaves, for Indonesian people, is

used for roofing. Young coconut leaf, called

janur, is used as basic material for ketupat

weaving or transformed into many

interesting decoration forms, especially by

the Javanese and the Balinese in various

ceremonies , and independent form of

handicraft (the art of arranging young

coconut leaf). The leaf rib are gathered to

make a broom.

flowers) , is used to make an ornament in

a wedding ceremony to signify a certain

symbol . Sweet liquid which comes out of

the flower clusters contains sugar at the

concentration of 7,5 until 20 ,0%. Each

coconut tree has 2 flower clusters in which

the sap can be collected at the utmost 35

days. Thereafter, new flower clusters will

emerge. The sap can erase thirst or be

used as palm sugar ingredient.

The Husk The husk of coconut is the largest

component of the fruit, around 35% of the

total weight of the fruit. The husk comprises

of fiber and cork which serves to connect

one fiber to the other. Each coconut

comprises of 525 gram fiber (75% of the

husk), and 175 gram cork (25% of the

husk).

The Shell The shell of coconut is a hard layer

composed of lignin, cellulose, methoxyl,

and assorted minerals. The contents may

vary depending on the coconut variety.

Hard structures is caused by high level of

silicate (Si02) in the shell. The shell weighs

about 15-19% of the coconut fruit total

weigh .

various nutrients full of oil and fat. It is a

great foodstuff high in protein, carbohydrate

and a group of vitamin B such as :

Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin , and vitamin

C, which is an important source of food

nutrients. The content of these nutrients

vary depending on the fruit maturity level.

A mature fruit meat is rich in vegetable oil

(oil content: 35%). A mature coconut meat

is processed into grated coconut, coconut

milk, copra, and cooking oil. While the

meat of young coconut can be used to

topping cocktail beverages and made into

jam.

The Water The water of coconut contains a small

amount of carbohydrate , protein , fat and

some minerals . The content of these

nutrients depends on the age of the fruit.

Average calorific value contained in the

coconut water is around 17 calories per

100 grams. Green coconut water, among

other types of coconut contains the highest

tann in or antidotum (anti-poison).

Page 12: DONESIAN EXPORT PRO ILE COCONUT

Coconut water is also composed of

enzymes that can break down toxic

properties. Other chemical substances

contained in coconut water are ascorbic

acid or vitamin C, protein, fat, carbohydrate,

calcium or potassium . Additionally, the

water also consists of minerals such as

iron , phosphorus and sugar in form of

glucose, fructose and sucrose. The water

content per 100 gram of fruit is 95 ,5.

Moreover, the water of coconut can be

used as a medium to grow microbe like

Acetobacter xylinum in the making of nata

de coco.

COCONUT PRODUCTS In the beginning , the part of coconut which

is used economically and mostly was the

meat. A Large portion of coconut meat is

processed into copra to further processed

into cooking oil. Recently, however, along

with the growth in the field of technology

and market demand , bes ides being

processed into oil , coconut has undergone

coconut powder, and coconut sugar. Other

products resulted from diversification

include palm sugar, nata de coco, coconut

shell charcoal and activated carbon ,

coconut co ir, coconut wood-based

furniture . Coconut oil itself has developed

into virgin coconut oil (VCO).

e Desiccated coconut

Processing desiccated coconut is

actually done by employing the same

method as processing copra . The

basic principle is drying the coconut

meat. The difference is the dessicated

coconut needs to be processed in its

most hygienic condition , omitting the

epidermis to yield the desired white

color, and may result in many forms.

It must be naturally white preserving

the same coconut aroma so that later

in the utilization, it can generate

products with good quality.

e Virgin Coconut Oil, VCO

Virgin coconut oil is made from fresh

coconut, processed with controlled

heating or with no heating at all, no

chemical and ROB. In the making ,

virgin coconut oil does not undergo

fermentation or even insertion of

enzymes. Accordingly, the resulted

VCO is not clear in color but has a

strong coconut aroma and does not

smell rancid . Virgin coconut oil

contains a low free fatty acid (less

than 0,07% in form of uric acid). In

absence of purification, it contains

maximum amount of vitamin E and

free from aflatoxin contamination. The

vitamin E (tocopherol) serves to

maintain the oil stability and protect

it from rancidity. VCO is a stable oil,

not easily damaged by heat and

resistant against light and air. It has

a smoke point of 198 degree Celsius.

By nature, VCO can be stored at room

temperature for years.

(VCO-based cosmetic products)

Page 16: DONESIAN EXPORT PRO ILE COCONUT

VCO, economically, gives promising

market opportunity and niche. This is

due to the fact that VCO is one of

versatile oils in the world of industry

and health. In the world of industry,

widely in Indonesia . Recently,

coconut milk has been packed into

instant coconut milk, coconut cream,

and coconut milk powder.

VCO is one basic component for B. Coconut Water

cosmetics . While in the world of

health , it is used as drug . Further,

VCO has been used as the basis for

dietary oil , body oil, baby oil , massage

oil , body cream, nutriceutical products,

pharmaceutical products, shampoo

and lotion.

VCO must meet the following standard of

e Nata De coco

Nata de coco in Spanish means

the cream of coconut. It is produced

from the fermentation of coconut

water. Nata de coco is actually a

pure cellulose , a result of micro

bial activity of Acetobacter xylinum.

The production of nata de coco is

w idely practiced by small and

medium industries. At the small

industry level , nata de coco is

consumed as food supplement in form

of beverages, cocktails , pudding , ice

stick ingredients, etc. At the middle

industry level , nata de coco is pro

duced to meet the demand for

acoustic and soundproof insulation

material .

C. The Flower

e Coconut sugar

Coconut sugar is made from the

coconut sap. The sap is collected from

the flower clusters. Compared to cane

sugar, coconut sugar has stronger

aroma . On this account, coconut

sugar is preferred the most and widely

used. Coconut sugar consists of

chemical composition in form of

sucrose, carbohydrate , fat , protein ,

water, calcium, and ash.

The Range of Coconut Sugar

e Palm sugar

Palm sugar is a term attributed to

coconut sugar in form of crystal. The

distinctive feature of palm sugar lies

in the small-crystal-like form making

it dissolveable either in hot or cold

water. According to scientists ,

coconut sugar has better contents

than any other sugars in addition to

higher calories and a small amount

of adverse effect to the body.

A. Coconut shell

e Handicraft goods

Coconut shell , can be shaped into

handicraft goods. Coconut shell has

a very distinctive characteristics that

can be used to make various handi

craft items such as buttons, beads ,

accessories , interior decorat ion ,

plates, tablecloth , and unique coconut

shell tiles .

e Activated carbon or activated

charcoal

Coconut shell has not been widely

used. There is only a small portion of

coconut shell used as fuel for house

hold use, smoking copra , and other

uses. One of the valuable economic

products that are made and coconut

shell is activated charcoal. Unfortu

nately, there are still a few people who

make activated charcoal , whereas

there is a great potential of raw

material , usefulness , and market

share. Activated charcoal is charcoal

that is processed in such a way so as

to have high absorption/adsorption

towards liquid or vapor material.

Activated carbon can be made of

materials containing carbon , either

organic or inorganic . The usual

activated carbon that circulates in the

market comes from coconut shell ,

wood , and coal.

Currently, activated carbon has been

used widely in the chemical industry,

food/ beverage and pharmaceutical.

Page 19: DONESIAN EXPORT PRO ILE COCONUT

In general, activated charcoal is used

as an absorbent material, and purifi

ers. In small quantities it is used also

as a catalyst.

According to the Indonesian Industrial

Standard (SII No. 0258-79), require

ments for activated charcoal are as

B. Coir

Coir is the fiber obtained from the husk of

coconut. The traditionally processed coir

is usually used in the making of broom,

doormats, and rope. Recently, the use of

coir has been widespread.

The quality of coir is determined from the

color, percentage of impurities , water

content, and weight proportion between

the long and short fibers. A high quality

coconut coir has brightly brilliant color and

less than 2 percent impurities. The quality

of bristle fiber is determined based on color

and length of fiber. Good quality can be

seen from the bright color and a maximum

length of fiber 12 inch around (31 ,08 em).

Mattress is a fiber that is widely used for

14 I Indonesian Export Profile Coconut

bedding material. The basis of quality is

determined from the color, fiber length,

elasticity and cleanliness . High-quality

mattress has golden color, whereas low

quality is gaunt and dull.

A derivative product of coconut husk

possessing high value is rubberized curled

coir, Rubberized curled coir is a custom

molded fiber sheet to fit the desired size

(length , width, and height/thickness) ,

layered with rubber compound. This rubber

layer in the coir will help to stabilize the

shape , improve tenacity, and increase

elasticity of coir fiber pile. This rubberized

curled coir can be used to produce

mattress, pillow, car seat, and other forms

alike. Additionally, it can also be made into

assorted craft work.

Page 21: DONESIAN EXPORT PRO ILE COCONUT

MARKET DEVELOPMENT Traditional coconut-based products dominates Indonesia's coconut export products.

Indonesia's export value of coconut is around US$ 400-800 million per year in which

the majority of the products are in form of desiccated coconut, coconut in shell , copra ,

and crude oil of coconut. With a great potential of raw material and with the support

of improved mastery of coconut product processing technology, it opens opportunity

to implement product diversification and market development domestic and overseas.

The world demand for coconut continues to increase with the opening of markets in

China, Europe and Africa. As the product diversification develops, the export value will

also increase.

To further expand the market share of coconut products, particularly the diversification

of coconut, it is necessary to perform the following activities:

Promotion, promotions are performed to target potential nations such as through

joining exhibition events both from domestic and overseas. The goal of participating

in international exhibition is to introduce Indonesia's agricultural flagship products and

to encourage small and middle industries of Indonesia to enter the global market. It

is also aimed to facilitate the government in conducting trade mission in which the

government will bridge a bilateral meeting and business forum between entrepreneurs

of Indonesia and of export destination . In addition to further strengthen business

relationship among entrepreneurs , the forum will discuss efforts to increase trade

relations as well as investment promotion event for Indonesia.

Product Development, The main focus in developing coconut commodity is through

product diversification, besides also enhancing the competitiveness of coconut

commodity and improving quality and food safety on food products from coconut as

standard.

So as to be accepted, coconut products have to meet certain standards that apply in

export destinations. Coconut-based food products need to be certified as safe products.

For example, there are several products that have been certified as organic products

and is recognized by the USDA. Indonesia has set the standard as stated in the

Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Institutions/agencies that certify products can be

seen in http://apps.ams.usda.gov/nop/
