Trash Trek: The Project

Identify a Problem
● Choose an item to research.○ Can't decide?○ Don't be afraid to change.○ Be specific!
What are some things that we eventually get rid of? What do you have
today that is potential trash? Is there anything that doesn’t become trash?

● Is it a problem? ○ Find a problem to solve○ Not, a solution that needs a problem

Design a Solution
● New design (invention)● New system (process)● New use (repurpose)● New improvement (innovation)
Design a solution that adds value to society by improving something that already exists, using something that exists in a new way, or inventing something new.
Your Project mission this season is to make less trash or improve the way people handle the trash we make.

Evaluate Your Solution
● Why is your solution better than existing solutions?
● Ease of use / Simplicity● Cost analysis
○ Cost to implement/ produce
○ Product- selling price must be backed up by research (comparable item cost, price to manufacture, etc)
Common Misconceptions:
Project must be made of LEGOS
Teams must build a prototype, working or otherwise

Share Your Findings
● Ask for constructive feedback● Be receptive to feedback● Modify your solution ● Don’t wait until last minute!
Sharing your findings doesn’t have to be the same presentation you give to judges. Consider your audience.

● Check the rubric. ● The clearer and more direct your presentation, the easier it is for judges to
evaluate the content of your presentation.● Make sure the kids understand and can explain their project.● Do not write anything for them.● Double check spelling and completeness.

Presenting to the Judges● Be genuine. ● Be yourself. ● Smile! ● Think about where the judges are sitting, put display board where it is
easily seen, not across the room, and not too close it can’t be seen over the table.
● Know your parts!● 5 Minute Rule.● Kids must set up and break down themselves.● Include all members.
