Jennifer: Welcome, everyone, to Healing with the Masters. We are so excited to have a very special
guest with us, but before we get to Don Miguel, I want to talk about what the word masters means and what this show is about. That word master means so much, but while we may think of the masters as the wonderful guests that share their knowledge and their experiences with us each week, I consider you to be the masters, each of you in this audience, you, the participant. No one knows you better than you, and no one is more uniquely qualified to transform your life than you. Today we will discover together the tools and techniques to heal, to continue to shift your life into love and light and, in the process, truly make a difference on this planet. Together we are a powerful community. You matter. You can light up the world.
We’re going to light up the world tonight. We’re going to light up each of your world’s tonight
with our very special guest. So honored to have Don Miguel Ruiz on Healing with the Masters. Don Miguel is the bestselling author of The Four Agreements and the Fifth Agreement. He is also highly respected throughout the world, has received numerous recognitions, including a U.S. Air Force challenge coin engraved with the four agreements, and is regularly referenced as a national heirloom of Mexico. He was born the youngest of 13 children into a humble family with ancient traditions in rural Mexico. Although his parents anticipated that he would follow in their footsteps and eventually become a shaman, Don Miguel chose to attend medical school and became a surgeon. For several years, he practiced neurosurgery with his brothers and eventually realized that both the brain and the mind needed to be healed. While he knew that the mind was able to deteriorate just like the physical body, he did not have a way to heal it.
It took a near‐fatal accident for Don Miguel to experience pure awareness outside of the
constraints of his physical body, and there he realized that the Toltec wisdom of his family contained all the tools he would ever need. After this realization, Don Miguel returned home to finish his training and become a shaman. In the Toltec tradition, a shaman guides an individual to personal freedom. After exploring the human mind from a Toltec perspective, with a scientific viewpoint, Don Miguel has combined old wisdom with modern insights to create a new message, for all mankind, that is based in truth and common sense. He has since dedicated his life to sharing this new message through practical concepts that promote transformation. Welcome to Healing with the Masters, Don Miguel.
Don Miguel: It’s a pleasure to be with you, Jennifer, and all of you really. I was listening to what you were
saying just before you introduced me, where you tell everybody’s a master. I completely agree with you. Every single one who is listening to us and the rest of the humans who want to listen

to us also, they are masters, because it’s the practice that makes the master. What makes a difference is what is one of us when we’re master. We can master something so beautiful or something so dramatic, but we can see that any creation, from whoever around the world, is really a masterpiece of art, even if we don’t see it as an art. We can say also that your personal creation, the world that you create is a masterpiece of art. It’s your creation. The reality, the one you’re living is your creation, and whatever you believe is true for you, but only for you, not for anybody else, because the rest of the six billion people who live on this planet Earth, just like you, they create their own personal reality. That reality is relative. It’s not real, but it’s just for whoever is living in that reality. Whatever I’m saying right now is the point of view of the story that I create, the point of view of my reality, my world.
In the past, when they talked about the world, they didn’t talk about the planet Earth. They
talked about everything, but we believed that everything that we perceive — that includes the stars, the sun, the moon. It is not just the planet Earth. It is our own perception, our own creation, our own reality. Then every person lives in their own world, and when we have this awareness, we can see that since we were born, the way we explore our lives, the interaction that we have with society is what helps us to create that reality. With all the opinions, all the judgments, self‐opinions, self‐judgments, et cetera, we practice and practice and practice until we master being what we believe we are, but at a certain point, we have awareness. We find out we are not what we believe we are. We’re not even our name. It’s our parents who chose our name, and we identify ourselves by the name.
We identify ourselves also by whatever we do, whatever we believe, the way we communicate
with each other. The messages that we receive are the messages that we share wherever we go, because just like you say a little before, every single human who lives on this planet Earth is a master, I also can say that every single human who lives on planet Earth is an artist, and every single human who lives on planet Earth is a messenger. The word messenger means angel, and we all are angels. We all are messengers. When we get to that point, it’s a very interesting point, because we can see what kind of messengers are we. First all the messages that we receive from society, how we ingest those messages, how we create a personal identity, and then what is the message that we deliver to the people that we say that we love, like our beloved or parents or brothers or sisters, our children? Because the children learn from us, not just what we say but what we do. Then the message that we deliver is not just with words. It is our behavior. It’s with our lives. It’s with our presence, and yes, I believe in angels. It has nothing to do with religion. Like I said a little before, the word angel means messenger.
We see all those beautiful pictures in all those different churches, in all those different
temples, and we see all those wings. But the wings are just a symbol, the symbol of the messenger, the symbol of the human imagination, because our imagination is really our wings. Everything is possible in our imagination. At that point, when he says that imagination is more powerful than knowledge is absolutely true. I can say that because wherever I go around the world, and I know a lot of the world, I see everything that we humans create, all the human creation, and I can assure you that everything exists first in the human imagination, and with the action, we make all those dreams come true. All civilizations, for thousands of years, until this moment, first exist in the imagination, and with the action, we make it real. There is no doubt at all that we humans, we are the angels. We are the messengers, and like I say, it has nothing to do with religion. It is a fact.

Jennifer: That was spectacularly beautiful. So thank you for those poetic words. It looks like we’ve got
a little feedback here. Can you hear the feedback, Don Miguel? Don Miguel: No, I don’t. Jennifer: I’m just going to ask my crew to Skype me if they’re hearing the feedback. So what we’ve got
— what I heard you say — I love this message that, first of all, we’re messengers, we are artists, we are masters, and we are angels, and not in a religious sense, and that the aspect of the angels that we are, are the wings that we have, that are symbols of the imagination. The imagination is where we actually create our reality, and our reality is our own personal reality. So my question to you — it was just so beautifully said. My question to you, Don Miguel: I understand these concepts, and yet sometimes my life seems to overwhelm me and move me out of this kind of conceptual realm of how powerful I am, that I am this being of power and creativity and a master. I have to pay the darn bills, and I’m risking some things in my life that aren’t working. What do you say to people when they ask you that kind of question of what happens in the day‐to‐day life in the life of an angel on planet Earth?
Don Miguel: Well, it’s generally easy to understand that. The planet Earth is just like a school. When we
were born, we have no idea where we are. Right? Since our conception, we are facing the unknown. Everything is completely unknown to us. When our parents start teaching us, they hold our attention, and through that attention, they can load into our brain everything that they know. Society can load into our brain a whole belief system that we perceive in a certain way. We digest it, and that helps us to create our reality. Then we create our own world, but we are dealing with a lot of people that, just like us, they create their own world. With the language that we speak, we communicate, and we make all those kinds of agreements with everybody around us. We participate in society. We are part of society. As a human, we are a whole universe, but all the humans together, men, women, we are only one living being. Like your physical body is made by millions of cells, but every single cells is an individual. We can take it out of the body, and it still lives out of the body. It perhaps doesn’t have the awareness that all those cells together is just one physical body.
Well, all humanity, all of us together, we are only one living being, man/woman, and that living
being, we can say that it’s just an organ of a bigger living being, which is the planet Earth, but it’s not the only organ. There’s the forest. There’s the oceans. There’s the atmosphere. Every single species that exists on planet Earth is a different organ, and we altogether create the planet Earth. We interact with the rest of the organs of the planet Earth to create a metabolism, an equilibrium. I can compare humanity to the brain for our physical body, because we have the capacity to dream, to create a story, to create a language so that we can communicate with each other. Then when we see it all from that point of view and we go from the individual point of view and we can see that we interact with society, well, as part of society, we have to interact within, give and receive, be generous and be grateful.
I can say that love is an equilibrium between generosity and gratitude. Then first we have to
be grateful to be alive, to participate in this beautiful school that is the planet Earth where we face the unknown. When we learn the knowledge that we learn from society, from our parents, we change the unknown to the known. Now we know, and we feel safe by being around what we know. That means that at that time, we really create the human mind, and
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 5 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
we’re so comfortable in that human mind. We have an identity in that human mind. We know the concept of I am, you are, and we get a difference in the different parts of society. We know about government, about religion, politics, sports, every event that happens in humanity, but we also have the awareness of all the events that happen in the rest of the planet Earth, like earthquakes, like tsunamis, like wonderful days, you name it. There is a perfect equilibrium, and just in order to be alive and be important in that school, to transform the unknown into the known, we can see how beautiful it is just to explore everything that exists even before our conception. We also can see how beautiful it is for us to change what we receive, to change the society that we inherited from our ancestors, that we are part of the change, and that we are part of the stability also in this dance that we have with each other by playing in this wonderful playground that is the planet Earth.
Jennifer: So we can actually make a difference by being a cell within this brain of the planet Earth, so to
speak, by playing our part full out. The energy that I’m feeling here is just so beautiful and loving. I love what you said about love is the equilibrium between generosity and gratitude. I can kind of feel that in just the way that you’re communicating. So if we start living that way, is that part of how we can contribute to making the change on the planet, by living from this place of being generous and grateful in an equilibrium of love?
Don Miguel: Well, we can, every single human on Earth, make a difference on this planet Earth, but each
one of us makes a different contribution. It will be a better contribution when we have more gratitude and more generosity, when we love more, because it will be the opposite to be ungrateful and to be selfish. The changes that we do in that direction could be a little bit or completely different, but every human really makes a difference. It doesn’t matter how small it is or how big it is, because every single human is unique. We can say that we are humans. We come to this planet Earth with a mission and one mission only, and that mission is to enjoy and to explore life. Now, the how will change completely for every single human. There will be six billion different ways how we can enjoy life, but the mission is exactly the same for all of us. The way for us to do it is to understand what it is that we like and what we don’t like, to be honest with ourselves and to take responsibility for our own creation, because even if we don’t want to be responsible for our own creation, we are anyway. Many times we want to be responsible for somebody else. It doesn’t help that somebody else. It only makes our lives a little more complicated, which there’s nothing wrong with that.
Jennifer: The premise of responsibility is something you talk about quite a bit in The Four Agreements
and also in The Fifth Agreement. I’m wondering — I want to talk just briefly about The Four Agreements, in case there are people who may not have read it. If you could, take us quickly through each of the four agreements, because I think it’s a foundational premise that we then can use to discuss The Fifth Agreement and also go into a discussion a little bit about 2012, which I’d like to hear. Would that be okay, Don Miguel?
Don Miguel: Definitely. The four agreements, we can say, that is the introduction of a very ancient and new
way of life, the way of life of the artist. The word Toltec means artist and can be translated in all the different languages that we speak on this beautiful planet Earth. Many translations will mean exactly the same thing. We are just like our Father, and our Father, as God, created everything that exists. Like our Father, we also create. That’s why I call ourselves angels. That’s why I said a little before that everything that exists in our mind, with action, we make it real, because we are able to transform and create those beautiful societies. The four
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 6 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
agreements is the introduction of that way of life, to simplify everything, because it is based on common sense that comes directly from the human integrity, and it doesn’t matter what is the language that we speak. It doesn’t matter what religion we follow, what philosophy. What is important is that it comes directly from our integrity.
When we read The Four Agreements, it doesn’t matter if it’s in Japan, in China, in Portugal, any
other place, because it’s been translated in more than 36 different languages. It means exactly the same thing. We’ll understand, because it feels like I used the parents or the grandparents, parents who are giving their wisdom to us, simple four agreements that can make a huge difference.
The first one, as you know, is be impeccable with the world. This is because we use the world
with life, merging with life to create our own reality or virtual reality. It represents us. If we are impeccable with the world, our creation will look like a paradise. If we are not impeccable with the world, our creation will look like a huge drama. That’s why it is so important to be impeccable with the world, and it’s nothing but common sense.
Jennifer: What does it look like to be impeccable with the world? Don Miguel: Well, let’s put it in feelings. If you do good, you feel good. If you do bad, you feel bad. It’s a
very easy way to get what it means to be impeccable with the world. The second one is don’t take anything personally. That comes with awareness that you create your own reality, and in your reality, you are the center of the whole universe. It’s like, if you write a movie, you are the producer, the director and the main character, and everything else is just a secondary character. You create your own world and what you believe is true for you, but if you have awareness that everybody around you did exactly the same, like you did — they create their own reality, and in their reality, they are the producer, the director and the main actor or actress. You are only a secondary character in their movie. That will be the same with everyone that you know and even in many people that you don’t know. If you know that, then you will find out that what they deliver for you is completely different. They don’t even know you. In your own movie, you hardly know yourself. How can they know you?
Jennifer: Right. Don Miguel: If we have that awareness, if we don’t take anything personally, it’s because whatever they do
or say is based in the secondary character that they create. It’s not based in you, but if you take it personally, then you agree with whatever they do or say. Then you hurt yourself, but don’t take anything personally. That gives you immunity in the interaction that you have with anybody else.
The third one is don’t make assumptions. Well, it looks like it’s impossible not to make
assumptions, but don’t make assumptions that give you immunity in the interactions that you have with yourself, that you have with your knowledge, because your knowledge will tell you whatever you believe about you. It will tell you what other people think about you. You will make assumption that what you believe is true, but it’s not exactly the truth. We can say that, if you’re talking in your head, who is listening? And when we don’t make assumptions, that gives you immunity in interactions that we have with ourselves. Once again, it’s just common sense.
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 7 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
The fourth one is my favorite one, because the first three, it’s only the level of the mind, but
the fourth is the action. It’s what makes the dreams come true. Always do your best. The dream that you have becomes real when you take the action. If you don’t take the action, whatever is in your head, in your mind will dissolve in you. We’ll forget about it. Always doing your best is what will make the difference in whatever legacy we will leave in this beautiful planet Earth, the legacy that we will leave to our children, our friends, to our beloved humanity by doing our best.
In these four agreements is the introduction of this way of life as the artist. It takes practice
and practice to have the mastery. It doesn’t matter if you go to medical school or another school. The introduction and the practice is what takes you to the last year, to the last moment, what we can call also the final judgment. This is when the fifth agreement arrives. It is the end of the whole train, we can say, and as you know, this is be skeptical but learn to listen.
Jennifer: That was a surprise, honestly, when I looked at this book, and I’m like, “Okay, The Fifth
Agreement. I’ve been waiting for it for years.” What I heard was be skeptical but learn to listen. That was really cool.
Don Miguel: Yes, and be skeptical just because you know that everybody around you, they create their own
reality, their own world, and whatever they say, perhaps, is true for them but not necessarily is true for you. The key is to learn to listen, because when you listen to what they say, you know exactly where they’re coming from, and you do it without any judgment, without any opinion. You just listen, because it is not personal. This is what they live. When you practice the fifth agreement, you gain something that is extremely important for every single human, something that we know as respect, and respect always begins with you. You finally respect yourself completely, and when you respect yourself completely, all that interaction that we have in the mind gets to the end. That’s why we call it also the last judgment, because it’s the last time that you judge yourself. It’s the last judgment. When you respect yourself, automatically, you respect everything, everybody around you, and it doesn’t mean that you believe them. No.
You listen, and whatever works for you, you take it. It’s part of you now, and it’s just common
sense. We can say that when you finally apply the fifth agreement, you master the fifth agreement, that inner war in the mind is over. Like we said before, in all the religions, they believe that the conflict that exists in the mind is between good and evil. Well, it’s not true. Good and evil is just a result of the real conflict that is happening in the mind, and the real conflict is between the truth and lies. Believing in the truth, it takes you to goodness. Believing in lies, in one or other degrees, they take you to evil. It’s not a judgment. It’s just the way it is.
Once we have that awareness, we find something that humans have searched for for
thousands of years, and this is the inner peace. When finally your thoughts are not against each other, you have that peace in your mind. You don’t need to tell yourself what you know. You just know. Humans have been searching for that for thousands of years and use all those different tricks in order to reach that point. They create prayers. They create mantras. They create chanting, dancing, music, whatever can stop your mind, any trick. By practicing and practicing, the moment may come that you get that inner peace, but when you go in this
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 8 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
direction of being skeptical and you learn to listen, because you have the awareness that we just shared, then you no longer take anything personally. You don’t make assumptions. You are impeccable to the world. You always do your best, and now you are skeptical but not as a social position or because you think you’re more intelligent than anybody else. It has nothing to do with that. No.
Jennifer: That’s a really important point. Don Miguel: It’s just common sense. Jennifer: That’s a really important point. It’s not a social position of skeptical. It is skeptical of doubt
basically. It’s the power of doubt. Don’t believe in yourself or anybody else. Question what you hear, and that’s what you wrote in your book. Question what you hear.
Don Miguel: Say that again. I don’t think I understood your question. Jennifer: You talk about that it’s not a social position of skepticism. It’s not a position of power, that
you’re the ”skeptic”. It is about — you talk about the power of kind of doubt, that you’re using it to question what you’re hearing, question what you’re experiencing. Is that the idea?
Don Miguel: Well, yes. We come here, in this beautiful planet Earth, with a mission to enjoy life, to explore
life, to be happy. This is the mission for all of us, and this is exactly what we are doing right now. It is not important if you believe or not believe me. It’s not important if I believe myself or not. Being skeptical means don’t believe me, don’t believe yourself and don’t believe anybody else, but learn to listen. At that point, we don’t really need to believe, but listen, and whatever works for us, we keep it. We use the language, not just to communicate, at least not with the words. We use it in order to have fun, to share our feelings, to create poetry, to create songs, to paint, to express what we feel, what we are.
At a certain point of my life, many, many years ago, when I had that moment of inspiration, I
decided, from that point on, everything in my life will be about romance, because in that moment, I saw everything so beautiful that it was a feast of my eyes with all the gratitude just for being alive. Then I felt so generous that I started giving the only thing that means something, which is myself. The only way to do it is just to be me, whatever it is, because many people have been asking me, “Okay, Miguel, what are you?” To answer that question, well, I can use knowledge to justify my existence. I can say, “Well, I am a male human being.” I can say, “Well, I’m a medical doctor. I’m a surgeon. I’m an author.” I can say also, “I’m a soul. I’m a spirit.” But the truth is that I don’t know. I don’t know what I am, and it’s okay. I don’t need to know. The unknown doesn’t make me feel fear, because I know that there’s so many things that are out of the reach of knowledge. Knowledge is my creation. I create knowledge. I create the languages that I speak, and I create by agreeing with millions of people who speak the same language. That’s why we can understand each other. I can understand English. I can understand Spanish, but let me see if I wake up tomorrow in Japan. I will not understand what they say. I will not understand what the graphics on the street say, and if I do not understand it, then I have to agree with all those millions of people who speak Japanese. Then I will understand, but when I learn their language, I also will learn their way of life, their philosophy, their religion. That usually is the path to make a shock in my belief
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 9 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
system. Actually of course not, because it’s exactly the same. We come from the same place, and I understand, without words, what they feel.
I have been in Japan, two or three weeks ago, and I was impressed. It was so beautiful to be
there, to be in Tokyo, Kyoto, places with a big population that lives in peace. You can feel that peace around, and yes, I know they had an earthquake and tsunami. When I was there, they had that big storm, and to see the reaction of the Japanese people was so amazing. There was no panic at all. It was so beautiful to see Japan in that way. If I wake up in China and Germany the next day, I would do exactly the same thing. That means that we humans are the ones that create knowledge and not the opposite. We create knowledge. We give all the personal power to knowledge, and then knowledge becomes the great tyranny in our lives. It’s the one that dictates everything that we do and what we don’t do in life. It’s what creates all the limitations, what is or is not possible. You name it, it’s right there. It’s knowledge, the one who makes it possible or not possible. It’s knowledge that tells you you’re good enough or you’re not good enough. You cannot make it.
Jennifer: Don Miguel, what is the difference between knowledge and knowing? You talked earlier
about this place of just knowing. Just knowing what you know is kind of what I hear. So what’s the difference between knowledge and knowing?
Don Miguel: Well, knowing is just part of knowledge. We can say that beyond knowledge is wisdom, and
wisdom, let’s just say, you know. To say know is just part of knowledge, but I have to use the word because we agree on the meaning of that word. But I have to make the assumption that all of you understand what I mean. With that knowledge, we are all together in one. We are the same. With that knowledge, I know exactly what you are, and you know exactly what I am, because with that knowledge, we are the same force who moves our physical body. There is no difference between us, and with that common sense, everything becomes extremely easy. It’s knowledge that complicates everything. It’s what makes everything so difficult.
When we find out and we find vast knowledge, it doesn’t mean that knowledge is good or bad
or right or wrong. No. When we take the control over knowledge, then knowledge becomes an ally and is no longer a tyrant. Knowledge aligns with wisdom and accepts that common sense and helps us to enjoy life. Like I said, even before it becomes an ally, it’s helping us to enjoy life, because we create it.
Jennifer: So we create our life. We create both the conflicts, and we create the truths and the lies in
our brains. We’re also here to enjoy life and explore life and be happy. A little bit earlier, you talked about that we learn things from our parents and that we have this knowledge sometimes that doesn’t serve us, that we become tyrants to that knowledge. How do we unlearn? Is there a way to unlearn?
Don Miguel: Definitely. Well, first of all is to be aware that the life we are living is because we created it
that way. With that knowledge, we guide our dream to be that way. If we don’t have that awareness, we cannot control the change. To have that awareness is knowledge, knowing itself and taking the responsibility that it was knowledge who really created either that heaven or that hell. Then with awareness, now we can make a decision if we want to change our world, if we want to change our reality or not. This is something completely personal. Only we know, because we created it. We are the artist. If we don’t want to change it, we will not
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 10 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
change it, but if we want to, we will. Just to have that awareness perhaps is not enough, but it’s enough to give you the desire to change, because then the other challenge is when you try to change and you cannot. You realize that you cannot change, and this is because you practiced the opposite for so long, it becomes automatic. Your reaction becomes so automatic, and this is because you practice and practice until it becomes automatic.
It’s like when you try to learn to play piano. In the beginning, you make mistakes, but you
focus your attention. With practice, you are playing better and better and better, until the moment comes that you can sing, you can talk, you can do whatever else and play the piano at the same time. You recognize whatever mistakes right away. It becomes so automatic. This is what we do with every action and reaction that we have during the time that we grow up, to practice what we believe that we are so that everything becomes automatic. Then we have the awareness. We try to change, and we find out that it’s not that easy, as we believed. Just to have that awareness is just the beginning of the practice to unlearn what we already know, and this is our new challenge, to unlearn in order to change the world.
Finally, after practice, you’ll see that you are changing what you want to change, and the next
challenge comes. It is when you find out that you don’t want to change, that you are fine just by doing what you do all the time. Then you have to see the difference, what you want to change and what you don’t want to change. Like we see, it’s just pure common sense. You make the decisions on how you change your world and in what direction you want to change your world. It’s not because somebody tells you to change it, so you should change that. No, but awareness is just the very first step, to be aware that you create your reality and to be aware also that — this is very important — that you are perfect just the way you are. This is extremely important. You are perfect just the way you are, and you change it just because you want to change it. The whole thing, it doesn’t matter how dramatic or how beautiful it is. It’s a masterpiece of art. Like we said before, all of us are artists. All of us are masters. All of us are angels. To be angels, to be messengers, we can be angels of truth, or we can be angels of lies, or like in religions, they say fallen angels. Either way, we are angels. We are messengers, and that’s the question in the book of The Fifth Agreement, that my son shared with everybody. You say what kind of angel are you.
Jennifer: What kind of angel are you? I like that. Don Miguel: Yes. What is the message that you deliver to the people that you claim you love? What’s the
message that you give to your beloved, to your parents, your brothers or sisters, your children and mainly to yourself? What is the message that you give to yourself? Are you really what you say you are? Anyway, this is something that I think is so beautiful.
Jennifer: So Don Miguel, when we get to that place of asking that question, what kind of an angel am I,
and we see things that we don’t necessarily like, what do we do with that information now? So we’re asking the question. We’re paying attention, as you recommend. What do we do if we see something we don’t like?
Don Miguel: Well, number one, don’t believe me, but listen. Jennifer: Don’t believe you. Okay.

Don Miguel: Then take it, and what you don’t think is good, you put it in the trash. It’s nothing personal. You will change it in your way, not in anybody else’s way and only if you want to. It’s not that you have to. This is important. It is your dream, is your story, is your life. You come to this beautiful school of life without knowing. You come innocent. You lose the innocence. With awareness, we can recover, and then we can just enjoy life, and my way, I decide, from now on, everything is romance. That begins with myself. I love myself so much that I will give to myself whatever is the best for me, and this is not selfishness. It’s self‐love, because by loving myself, I am very grateful, and I am so generous. I give myself — I can see I have so much fun to be with myself. I really enjoy a lot being with myself. When you are around people and you see someone who is having a lot of fun, that is laughing, you love to be around these people. If you see someone who is kind of angry or jealous or screaming, you want to go away from those people. Well, it’s that way with me. I really enjoy a lot being with me. That’s how much I love myself.
Jennifer: That’s wonderful. Don Miguel: And by enjoying myself that way, I give the best I can to myself. I see my physical body like the
most beautiful pet, because our physical body’s an animal. It’s just like any other animal. We eat. We drink. We pee. We poop just like any other animal. We mate, exactly the same, like anybody else. Then I treat my body better than I treat my dog or my cat. How many times, if we have a pet, we will not allow anybody to go and mistreat our pet or hurt our pet? Why in the world are we going to allow someone to come and hurt our body or disrespect our body? If we will protect our pet, don’t you think it’s more logical to protect our body better?
Jennifer: Yeah. I love what you’re saying, and there’s so much. I can tell that you love yourself. I can
actually tell. I can feel it, and it allows me to have a presence with you that feels really safe as a result. I know, Don Miguel, you’ve had some health issues in the last year. What kind of practices did you apply to your own health challenges, using these principles that you’re talking about?
Don Miguel: Well, I am alive in order to be happy. In 2002, February 28, I had a major heart attack. I was
for 90 days in a coma. When I woke up, I found out that I was living with 16 percent of my heart capacity. The doctors said that I would be lucky if I would survive one or two years. Well, it was eight years and one‐half that I keep going, slower than before, of course, but I keep going and doing my seminars, keep helping my children, et cetera, et cetera, just because I have so much love for life. I have nothing to do with my body. I give to my body the best I can give to my body, and I really take care of my body the best I can. This is nothing personal. This can happen to anyone, not just to me, to any human. Then in 2009, I decided that I wanted to change my heart. I applied for a heart transplant. It took a whole year for them to see my whole body, to see that the whole body was strong enough that it could survive the transplant, and October 9, 2010, I had the heart transplant. It’s already a little more than one year that I have lived with my new heart, and after I had the heart transplant, my body started getting stronger and stronger. I’m traveling all around, again, and I’m becoming more and more the way I used to be before the heart attack.
As you can see, it’s just because I have a strong will, a strong will to live and to enjoy life.
Whatever is the physical pain, whatever is not really an excuse for not enjoying life, and we’re talking something major — I see so many people for something so little they want to kill

themselves. They believe in depression, when really they have everything in their life to enjoy life, to be happy. I think it’s a little easier, but it’s not really an adjustment. It’s just a fact, and this is nobody’s guilt. I’m not blaming anybody. I’m not judging anybody. No, but if they have that awareness and they really love themselves and they really take care of their own body, they give to themselves the best they can. To enjoy life is to do what you love to do, instead of do it because you have to.
All that comes from desire, and desire can go into different directions. If desire goes into
obsession, it will take you into destruction, first self‐destruction and then destruction of anything that you create. Whatever you create can be destroyed by obsession. On the other hand, if your desire goes to passion, if you’re living in the moment, you’re enjoying what you are doing right now, and that passion will take you to inspiration. Inspiration will take you to the ecstasy, to yourself, to what you really are. It takes you to love.
Jennifer: And love is what you say is that equilibrium between generosity and gratitude. Love feels,
sometimes, like it’s elusive. There’s a three‐dimensional love between a man and a woman or same‐sex couples, and then there’s this love that is more, I guess, divine. How would you define that divine sort of love?
Don Miguel: Well, love is really divine, real love, because it is the other kind of love that is a reflection of
the real love. The kind of love that makes people suffer is the love that is possessive, that is jealous, that is angry, is envious, that is possessive, that tries to control everything. That kind of love is just really what I call the biggest demon from hell. It’s not real, but it really hurts everyone. All humanity really goes into that kind of love, because this is what we learn. It’s not the unconditional love. All that love that I described before is based on lies. You can say that the real love is based on the truth. The truth and real love is exactly the same. We can say that the truth doesn’t need anybody to believe in the truth or not, even that human creates their own truth in their mind that is so personal but is not truth. It’s not truth but really makes people suffer. We can call it also this other kind of love, but that real truth, that real love existed long before the creation of humanity and will exist long after the extinction of humanity. It doesn’t care if we humans believe or not in the truth. It just exists.
Jennifer: Beautiful. We have a question for one of our viewers about financial difficulties, lack of
money, lack in life. What recommendations or suggestions do you give to people who are having some financial difficulty?
Don Miguel: Well, this is kind of universal. It’s not just a certain kind of people, because right now many of
us can start complaining that we cannot pay the rent, the lights or whatever, but there’s so many other humans around the world who, for many, many years, they don’t have a place to sleep. They live in conditions like I used to live 200 or 300 years ago. We only see that when it’s happening to us, not when it’s happening to somebody else. Then, like I say all the time, the way humanity evolves is in times of stability and times of crisis. Times of crisis is because that gives us the opportunity to keep changing, to advance and to let go what was comfortable, that is, in times of stability. Times of stability goes until the whole thing grows so much that we no longer want to handle it, and we want to change. Then the crisis comes, and through the crisis, we have the opportunity to make all those changes.
Healing With the Masters: Volume VIII Page 13 of 22 Don Miguel Ruiz October 20, 2011 Copyright 2011, all rights reserved Jennifer McLean | Healing with the Masters | www.McLeanMasterWorks.com
Then another period of stability comes when peace comes, again, between nations, between whatever, and it’s how we are evolving. Then yes, we can say that there’s all those problems, but there’s something important that they might forget. They have will, and with the will, they can do whatever they need to solve all the problems. If we believe in God, we can say that God will not give you a challenge that you cannot solve. If you have a strong will, you will solve it, and if you lose the job, maybe that gives you the opportunity to create something that can take you to a better place. If you don’t have the will and you feel sorry for yourself, well, I don't know then. It’s individual.
Jennifer: So how do we create a strong will? Don Miguel: Practice makes the master. Practice your will. It’s like when I had the heart attack, and I only
had 16 percent of my heart capacity. I will keep doing what I was doing, what makes my heart sings, because the will is strong. It’s just because I said so. Anyone can do exactly the same thing. I’m not better than anybody or worse than anybody. We’re exactly the same. Then to feel sorry for someone is not to respect them. On the other hand, to feel compassion is giving a hand. Help them to stand up, and let them know that they can do it. If we have pity for them, we say, “Oh, I’ll do it for you.” By doing that, it’s a lack of respect.
Jennifer: We take away their will in a way. Don Miguel: Exactly. Jennifer: So Don Miguel, we are at the top of the hour and top of the show. I want to share a little bit
about your special offer, but before we do that, do you have any final thoughts for our audience today?
Don Miguel: Well, just for everybody to remember that you are perfect, you are wonderful, you are
beautiful just the way you are. Whatever you change is because you want to, not because you have to, and you come here to enjoy life, not to suffer life. But if you want to suffer life, that is your decision, and you have the right to suffer if that’s what you want to do.
Jennifer: Beautiful, really beautiful, gentle, kind, healing words. There are several people that said that,
just by hearing what you’ve been saying tonight, they’ve commented, there’s tears in their eyes and it feels like their heart is opening, so thank you for this. Now, we actually have a contest that we do on this show. We give away $250 cash, and we like to choose something during the course of the show that kind of emphasizes the show so they’ll remember it. The phrase that pays tonight is what kind of angel are you. What kind of an angel are you? That is our phrase that pays, and you can go to the contest page to enter.
Thank you so much, Don Miguel, for joining us on Healing with the Masters. It’s truly an honor
having you on. Your books changed my life and changed many lives on this planet. We are grateful to be able to spend this time with you. I’d like to go into your special offer just a bit. If you folks are interested in much, much more, you get to hang out with Don Miguel in a very intimate way with this special offer. If you go to:

Best‐Selling Author of The Four Agreements Toltec Master Founder of The Sixth Sun Foundation MiguelRuiz.com
Don Miguel Ruiz was born into a humble family with ancient traditions in rural Mexico, the youngest of 13 children. He considers himself very lucky, as this was where he learned from an early age that everything is possible, if we really want it. His parents, Don Jose and Dona Sarita, as well as his grandfather, Don Leonardo, all believed that Miguel would continue their legacy in the centuries old Toltec tradition. Instead Don Miguel attended medical school, and became a surgeon. For several years he practiced neurosurgery with his brothers, and he realized that what needed to be healed was not only the physical brain, but the human mind as well. A near fatal car accident changed the direction of Don Miguel’s life. He experienced himself as pure awareness outside of the constraints of his physical body. He realized that the Toltec wisdom of his family contained all of the tools needed to change the human mind. Don Miguel promptly returned to his mother to finish his training and he became a Shaman. Don Miguel moved to the United States to share his wisdom, and spent the next 15 years exploring ways to heal and change the human mind. He witnessed his students struggling to quiet their minds and sought to create tools to assist them. The result of this quest was The Four Agreements®. This book contains a specific series of practical steps, that when used by anyone, can result in consistent and long‐term personal transformation. In February of 2002, Don Miguel suffered a near‐fatal heart attack. The damage from the heart attack and subsequent coma left him with a heart functioning at only 16% of capacity and in constant pain. Don Miguel would not accept his doctor’s prognosis that he would be restricted to an inactive life of resting at home. He personally embodied the message he shares, by continuing to joyfully live his life, sharing his message through books, lectures and journeys. Though he was enjoying life he also knew that he was slowly dying and focused on preparing his sons to carry on his legacy. In 2009 Don Miguel’s body began to deteriorate much more rapidly and he applied for a heart transplant. In August 2010 he was put on the transplant waiting list. On October 9th 2010, Don Miguel successfully received a heart transplant. For Don Miguel this is a new beginning and with deep gratitude and generosity he is eager to share his message with all of humanity.

In the tradition of the Toltec, a Nagual (shaman) guides an individual to personal freedom. After exploring the human mind from a Toltec as well as scientific perspective, Don Miguel has combined old wisdom with modern insights and created a new message for all mankind, based in truth and common sense. He has dedicated his life to sharing this new message through practical concepts that promote transformation. His message is simple and when implemented, even incrementally, changes lives. Don Miguel is highly respected throughout the world. He has received numerous recognitions, including a US Air Force challenge coin engraved with The Four Agreements, and he is referenced as a National Heirloom of Mexico. The Four Agreements®, published in 1997; was a New York Times bestseller for more than 7 years and the 36th bestselling book of the decade. Other books have followed; The Mastery of Love, The Voice of Knowledge, Prayers, Beyond Fear and The Fifth Agreement, a collaboration with his son Don Jose. All of his books are international bestsellers. ‘Please help us to change the world’! Only you can change the world that you create, and by changing your world, the world will change… ‘and that is the Truth that will set you free’.
