Amongst our five concerts this week, there are two "Don't Miss" concerts that I’d like to bring to your attention and encourage you to come out for. First one, The Cookers, is here this Wednesday. They are a formidable Septet composed of some of the biggest names in jazz. They all forged their careers in the 60s, 70s and 80s, with some of the landmark groups from those eras: Billy Harper (tenor sax) with Lee Morgan Billy Hart (drums) and Eddie Henderson (trumpet) with Herbie Hancock George Cables (piano) with Dexter Gordon and Joe Henderson Cecil McBee (bass) with Charles Lloyd Donald Harrison (alto sax), with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers David Weiss (trumpet) with Freddie Hubbard Their list of credits extends far beyond this, and so does their collective discographies. The Cookers are touring in support of their fourth CD, “The Warriors”. I highly recommend coming out for The Cookers on Wednesday. Then on Thursday, one of our favorite male vocalists, Allan Harris, brings his NYC based group to play a tribute to two legendary jazz vocalists, Nat ‘King’ Cole and Eddie Jefferson. Allan has a gorgeous baritone voice, and he knows how to use it. He also is a fantastic entertainer, as well as a very good friend of ours. This tribute is testament to Harris’ range and versatility, as Nat "King" Cole was the very embodiment of classics and standards, and Eddie Jefferson was one of the founders of jazz vocalese. I highly recommend coming to hear Allan Harris on Thursday. I hope to see you at either or both of these concerts this week! These are both "Don't Miss" concerts. Two 'Don't Miss Concerts' this Week - The Cookers & Allan Harris

Nighttown by Nighttown / Jim Wadsworth Productions

Hi Folks.

Amongst our five concerts this week, there are two "Don't Miss" concerts that I’d like to bringto your attention and encourage you to come out for.

First one, The Cookers, is here this Wednesday. They are a formidable Septet composed of someof the biggest names in jazz. They all forged their careers in the 60s, 70s and 80s, with some of thelandmark groups from those eras:

Billy Harper (tenor sax) with Lee MorganBilly Hart (drums) and Eddie Henderson (trumpet) with Herbie HancockGeorge Cables (piano) with Dexter Gordon and Joe HendersonCecil McBee (bass) with Charles Lloyd Donald Harrison (alto sax), with Art Blakey and The Jazz MessengersDavid Weiss (trumpet) with Freddie Hubbard

Their list of credits extends far beyond this, and so does their collective discographies. The Cookersare touring in support of their fourth CD, “The Warriors”.

I highly recommend coming out for The Cookers on Wednesday.

Then on Thursday, one of our favorite malevocalists, Allan Harris, brings his NYC basedgroup to play a tribute to two legendary jazzvocalists, Nat ‘King’ Cole and Eddie Jefferson.

Allan has a gorgeous baritone voice, and heknows how to use it. He also is a fantasticentertainer, as well as a very good friend ofours.

This tribute is testament to Harris’ range andversatility, as Nat "King" Cole was the veryembodiment of classics and standards, andEddie Jefferson was one of the founders of jazzvocalese.

I highly recommend coming to hear Allan Harris on Thursday.

I hope to see you at either or both of these concerts this week! These are both "Don't Miss"concerts.

Legendary All-Star Septet Live on Nighttown Stage!

Featuring: Billy Harper-Tenor Sax, Donald Harrison-Alto Sax, Eddie Henderson-

trumpet, David Weiss-Trumpet, George Cables-Piano, Cecil McBee-Acoustic Bass,

& Billy Hart-Drums.

Experience counts, especially in jazz. The more time musicians spend interpretingtunes and interacting with others, the more articulation an audience can expect. You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language The Cookers bringto the bandstand and to their four critically acclaimed recordings, Warriors, Castthe First Stone, Believe and Time and Time Again (which was the iTunes Jazz CD ofthe year in 2014). This exciting new all-star septet summons up an aggressive mid‘60s spirit with a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals marked by all therequisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of some of the heaviesthitters on the scene today.

Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, and Billy Hart all cameup in the heady era of the mid ‘60s. It was a period that found the dimensions ofhard bop morphing from their original designs, and each of these guys helpedfacilitate the process as members of some of the most important bands of the era.Hart and Henderson were members of Herbie Hancock’s groundbreaking Mwandishigroup; Cecil McBee anchored Charles Lloyd’s great ’60s quartet alongside KeithJarrett and Jack DeJohnette; Billy Harper was part of Lee Morgan’s last group, aswell as being a member of Max Roach’s Quartet and Art Blakey and the JazzMessengers; while George Cables held down the piano chair in numerous bandsincluding groups led by Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, DexterGordon and Art Pepper.

David Weiss and Donald Harrison, from a more recent generation and the youngestmembers of the band, are experts in this forthright lingo, having gained experienceperforming with Art Blakey, Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver,Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock.

Each member of the Cookers has spent time leading his own series of groups aswell, and each has a keenly individual sound. But it’s the unmistakable power ofteamwork that makes this music so commanding and resonates with a kind ofdepth and beauty that speaks of the seasoned track record of its principals(combined, the group has over 250 years of experience in the jazz world and hasbeen a part of over 1,000 recordings). You can feel the collective weight of thatexperience in their CDs and especially in their live performances. Since this version

Nighttown! Playing Music from their new CD "Nothing Here Belongs".

Featuring: Joe Policastro-acoustic bass, Dave Miller-guitar, & Mikel Avery-drums.

On Nighttown's fully heated and covered Back Patio Space. Seating Limited.

Hailed by Downbeat for its “deft analysis of choice repertoire,” and by the ChicagoReader for its “diversity of approaches to all kinds of source material,” the JOEPOLICASTRO TRIO returns to Nighttown celebrating the release of their fourthalbum, Nothing Here Belongs.

This Chicago-based alternative jazz trio led by bassist Joe Policastro featuresguitarist Dave Miller and drummer Mikel Avery. While firmly rooted in jazz, theband’s open-minded, inclusive nature draws upon a wide array of musical styles andsources while still keeping the aesthetic of an acoustic trio intact.

Nothing Here Belongs marks the fourth release by the band. The new releasefollows in the wake of West Side Story Suite (2013), POPS! (2016), and ScreenSounds (2017), all of which highlighted the trio’s ability to remake unlikely songs inits own raw, highly idiosyncratic fashion. Nothing Here Belongs, by contrast, for thefirst time showcases the trio’s captivating body of original music, while alsoincluding characteristically bold arrangements of songs by Bruce Springsteen,

Guitarist George Benson calls Napoleon “sensational.” Detroit Free Press critic MarkStryker says Napoleon “plays with a gentle, purring tone that makes you lean inclose to hear its range of color and articulation.” Washington Post critic Mike Joycepraises his “exceptionally nimble finger-style technique.” Comparing him to WesMontgomery, music critic Michael G. Nastos says, “he displays an even balance ofswing, soul, and single-line or chord elements that mark an emerging voicededicated to tradition and universally accessible jazz values.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1977 and raised in Ann Arbor Michigan, Randy Napoleon beganhis journey in jazz immediately after graduating from University of Michigan. JeffHamilton of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra invited the young Napoleon to doa series of performances with them at the Hollywood Bowl. From there, Napoleon’scareer took off, first touring with pianist Benny Green nationally and internationallyfor a year, and then full time with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. A three-year stint with crooner Michael Buble followed; Napoleon is featured on Buble’sGrammy-nominated CD “Caught in the Act.”

Currently, Napoleon tours with the legendary singer/pianist, Freddy Cole, and isfeatured on Cole’s 2009 album, “Live at Dizzy’s Club: The Dreamer in Me. “ He isthe main arranger and the guitarist on “Freddy Cole Sings Mr. B,” a 2010 Grammy-nominated release from High Note that features songs from the Billy Eckstine songbook, as well as on “Talk to Me,” Cole’s 2011 album and Cole’s most recent album“This and That.”

Today, Napoleon is one of the most sought after guitarists in New York, where he isknown as a forward-thinking musician with a passion for the jazz guitar tradition. Inaddition to backing the best, he leads his own bands, an organ trio, a trombonetrio, a quartet with piano, and a three-horn sextet that includes organ, drums, trumpet, tenor sax and trombone.

Vintage Guitar Magazine: What younger jazz guitarists stand out to you?

George Benson: I like the guitar player who’s playing with Freddy Cole [RandyNapoleon]. He has an all-fingers approach; he doesn’t use just thumb or pick. He’sspectacular.

From Los Angeles! Vocalist extraordinaire and Telarc Recording Artists hits the

Stage at Nighttown!

Featuring: Melissa Morgan-vocals, Randy Napoleon-guitar, George DeLancey-

acoustic bass, & Jim Rupp-drums.

"You have to check out this voice. It is interesting. It is sassy. It is sexy," saysproducer John Clayton. Brought up in the jazz clubs of New York City, MelissaMorgan has a voice that is unexpected. From the exterior you would assume asultry lounge singer, which does make an appearance once and awhile, but frominside she contains a powerful instrument. "Prepare to fall in love," says the BayArea Reporter, and fall in love you do.

On stage she bares everything and makes you laugh while doing it. While belting ablues or tenderly massaging a ballad, she has come a long way from herappearance at the 2004 Thelonious Monk Competition.

In 2009, Melissa released her debut album on Telarc Records, 'Until I Met You' toenthusiastic reviews and was embraced by the jazz community as "the one we'vebeen waiting for" (Dr. Herb Wong, jazz critic and historian). Downbeat Magazineincluded her on their 2009 Rising Star List and JazzTimes has named her"audacious and decidedly salty."

With her new album close to completion, she has gathered together her dearestfriends to tell her story of the last five years, growing in the business and as amusician. While you will always hear definitive influences from Nancy Wilson, DinahWashington and Billie Holliday, "Melissa isn't copying anybody" (London EveningStandard) and most certainly has a definitive sound all her own.

Praise for Melissa!

'Give your Norah Jones collection a break and pop in this 27-year-old's debut CD ofclassic and obscure jazz tunes. Her sultry voice shines on Nancy Wilson's 'Save YourLove for Me' and 'I Wonder,' in which she asks a past love, 'Will your heart comerunning back to me?''- RealSimple.com

'You'll hear elements of Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington and Dakota Staton in hersound, but Melissa Morgan isn't copying anybody...with the help of her top-gradestudio group, Ms. Morgan's voice is a shaft of sunlight.'- 5 Stars from the London Evening Standard

'Morgan is a consistent joy, and unlike some singers, she commands the band, notthe other way around. Given the spicy edge in her sexy voice, her dry allure and theway she pops the words like a whip on a gospel choir, Morgan's time has come.'- DownBeat Magazine

From Kent, Ohio. Celebrating their 49th Year! Legends of Jazz, Blues, & Rock live

at Nighttown.

On Nighttown's Fully Covered and Heated Stephens Green Patio.

15 60 75 The Numbers Band has been praised by almost every national musicpublication and several international publications since the beginning of their 30years of live performances and recordings. Many fans are under the impression thatthe band remains obscure by choice. In fact, they have never been offered acontract from any recording company in the industry, ever.

The music "cannot be categorized", "it is undefinable", "too original". The musicindustry is not about music anymore. It is about selling products the public canrelate to. After all, it is a business. Even "alternative" music has become a label. The founder of the band, Robert Kidney, explains, "The music industry, the media, and the tellsusourvision (TV) are defining for the American public what is goodmusic by only playing and supporting what is profitable. We are taught to disregardeverything that is not familiar. We (The Numbers Band) give the people our best. Our effort goes into being creative, unique and original. We define our own sound. There are no rules because we don't play the game. We are not in it for the game,we're in it for the music."

So, the band continues to create and evolve outside of the "Rock & Roll"establishment. The majority of the recordings were financed by friends. Hundredsof photographs taken of the band in different stages of it's existence by differentamazing people tell a story of intense performances, long nights, and the passing oftime. Band members have come and gone, and returned again. Robert sees musicas much more than an emotional release or a performance.

The title of the band has always aroused curiosity from fans. The fans called themThe Numbers because it was easier than trying to get the figures right. Numbershad not been used in a name before, and the political climate in 1970 was quiteOrwell-ian. Robert choose a sequence of numbers mentioned in a book written byPaul Oliver called The Blues Fell This Morning. In the chapter "The Jinx Is On Me",Oliver describes the Numbers Racket popular in Harlem in the 1950s and howdreams were analyzed as number sequences and used for placing bets. The band'smusic theory specialist, Terry Hynde, also discovered that 15 divided 15 is 1, 60divided by 15 is 4, and 75 divided by 15 is 5. In a musician's world, "1, 4, 5," isreferred to as the "universal progression".

The band resides in northeast Ohio. They have several recordings under their beltand more music than they can afford to release.

From Toulouse, France! Jazz, Blues, and Boogie Woogie from Versatile and

Dynamic Pianist from France!

Featuring: Philippe LeJeune-piano, George Lee-bass, & Sunny Tabler-drums.

Playing Music from his Brand New CD "Cleveland Getaway"

French pianist Philippe LeJeune is a perfect example of the mixture of jazz andblues which was especially an important strain in the jazz tradition. The youngpianist attended a 1968 concert in Reims, France, by master boogie-woogie andblues pianist Memphis Slim, and immediately put an end to his classical efforts andbegan teaching himself the blues, scouring local record shops for LP's by boogiewoogie greats. In 1980 he was invited by Memphis Slim - who had been a parisiancitizen since 1962 - to cut an album titled « Dialog In Boogie » as a piano duet. A frenchman who loves and plays classic American jazz is not entirely unusual, butwhat sets Philippe apart from his contemporaries is his soulfoul feel for the music. His repertoire ranges from classic barrelhouse boogie woogie piano to DukeEllington and Horace Silver tunes as well those of Milt Jackson and GeorgeGershwin. Philippe LeJeune has released six CD's in the United States and also makesnumerous appearances in various American jazz and blues clubs and festivals :Detroit Jazz Festival, Toledo Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival, Monterey Bay BluesFest, Cincinnati Blues Festival. His performance at the 2005 Motor City Blues &Boogie Woogie Festival (Detroit) was recorded live to be edited into P.B.S. televisionspecials and DVD. Living in Toulouse, France, LeJeune has performed for manyyears throughout Europe in the Jazz festivals and clubs circuit (France, Spain,Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Republic …) and in Africa (Tunisia, Sénégal).

Philippe LeJeune has found a role not only as an interpreter of contemporarynumbers, but as traditionalist bringing back to today's audiences important musicfrom a variety of older sources and melting it all together into a highly personalstyle and repertoire. The frenchman's natural instinct for blues, jazz and boogie isfood for the soul.

Mike, Jim, & Bill Play The Beatles Revolver & RubberSoul$15.00$15.00 Wednesday 4/24 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

A unique reconstruction of the classic Beatles Revolver & Rubber Soul Albums

featuring 3 voices and 3 guitars, with great stories Live at Nighttown!

Featuring: Mike Kearns, Jim Wilson, and Bill Hoffman.

Mike, Jim & Bill (Clevelanders Mike Kearns, Jim Wilson and Bill Hoffman) haveperformed their interpretation of The Beatles’ White Album to sold out crowds, twice, at Nighttown. Now the boys follow up with two of The Beatles’ most popularand innovative albums: Rubber Soul and Revolver.

On October 17, 1965, The Beatles entered Abbey Road Studios to record their sixthalbum, just in time, for a Christmas release, as usual. But there was nothing usualabout the outcome. First, and there were many firsts, they did not have songs torecord so over the next month and just eleven recording sessions they wrote andrecorded 14 of their most creative works. And instead of writing songs of teen love, and inspired by American folk and soul music, they wrote songs about their liveswhat they felt inside. “Norwegian Wood”, “Nowhere Man”, “The Word”, “Think forYourself” and “In My Life” to name a few. Being recording veterans, The Beatlesasserted themselves and, for the first time, had complete creative control whichresulted in, Rubber Soul, an album that certainly changed things.

The change continued with their next effort, Revolver. Again, the universes of popwriting, music, arranging and recording was expanded. 1966 was the year musicgot “experienced’ and The Beatles led the way. The Beatles wanted everything tosound different, so they experimented with levels, mic placement, tape loops, twinguitar leads, Leslie-phased vocals, Indian instruments artificial double-tracking(ADT) and a variety of new effects, most of which were invented on the spot. Theresult was another milestone led by “Eleanor Rigby”, “I’m Only sleeping”, “Here,There and Everywhere”, “Good Day Sunshine”, and “Tomorrow Never Knows”.

Both albums, not only, changed the course of The Beatles but, as many have said, changed the direction of pop music. This is not a tribute band. No wigs, please.Mike, Jim & Bill treat each song with the love and respect they deserve and withjust three guitars and three voices add style and feeling of their own.

rare, and exclusive, Small Club Appearance!!

Phil Keaggy is perhaps one of the most admired guitarists in music today. His fansrange from those who aspire just to be able to play Keaggy's mistakes, to professionalmusicians who have been strongly influenced by his style. And in between are thosewho don't play guitar, yet find solace in his beautifully penned lyrics and memorablemelodies.

Phil's solo career has spanned more than 40 years, and has included over 60 soloalbums, both vocal and instrumental, 8 releases with his band, Glass Harp, as well asnumerous duets and trio albums. One of the most sought after studio guitarists, Philalso continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changingstyle, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumental compositions.

Born in 1951 in Youngstown, Phil grew up in a home filled with music. On Phil's 10thbirthday, his brother, Dave returned home with a Sears Silvertone guitar. That's whenthe magic began.

Phil spent most of his younger days involved in music, and at the young age of 13, hejoined his very first band, the Keytones. He later went on to join such local groups asThe Vertices, The Squires, and the Volume Four, who later changed their name to NewHudson Exit.

But it wasn't until 1970, when Phil's band Glass Harp (with childhood friend John Sferraon drums, and Dan Pecchio on bass) recorded their self-titled first album that peoplereally began to take notice of this incredibly gifted guitar player. Glass Harp gainedmore popularity in the Ohio area, opening for such bands as the Kinks and Yes, andeven performing at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. Over the next fewyears, they recorded two more albums entitled "Synergy" and "It Makes Me Glad".

By 1972, Phil saw his life going in a different direction, and made the tough decision toleave Glass Harp and pursue a solo career. His first solo album, "What A Day", wasrecorded during January 1973. He married his sweetheart Bernadette that summer, andthe following year, they moved to Upstate New York and joined a Church communitycalled Love Inn.

During his years there, Phil took a break from recording his own music. It wasn't untilthree years later in 1976 that Phil would record his second solo album, "Love BrokeThru", which was soon followed by a string of albums, including the acclaimedinstrumental album, "The Master And The Musician".

With the Christian Music industry really beginning to grow, Phil won his very first Doveaward in 1988 for his instrumental album, “The Wind and the Wheat. Phil's second DoveAward came in 1992 for his Celtic-influenced, "Beyond Nature". Each year from 1998 to2001, Phil has dominated the "Instrumental Record" category at the Doves, winning for"Invention", "Acoustic Sketches", "Majesty and Wonder", and most recently "Lights ofMadrid".

For three years in a row, Phil was voted one of the top fingerstyle guitarists by GuitarPlayer Magazine readers.

These days, Phil Keaggy continues to delight audiences all over the US performingprimarily acoustic shows, and occasional concerts with a band.

Throughout their storied 35-year history, the Yellowjackets have recorded 22albums, received 17 Grammy® nominations – won 2 – performed countless sold-out tours, and enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success.

The Yellowjackets formed in the late 1970’s as the backup band for guitarist

Page 26: Dominick Farinacci - Spirit of the Groovelive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_2-2019.03.31.12.31...Music icon Quincy Jones says of Dominick’s accomplishments in performance, recording,

Robben Ford and recorded their first album together in 1980. That first album wasvery successful. However, shortly after that recording Robben Ford decided torecord in a different musical direction (more blues) and thus the modern dayYellowjackets were formed originally as a trio with Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslipand Ricky Lawson. From that time forward to today with the addition of BobMintzer, the Yellowjackets have gained and maintained prominence as one of jazz’smost influential and most loved jazz groups.

Throughout it all the band has undergone numerous lineup changes. Never failingto rise to the inevitable challenges of adjustment the Yellowjackets - RussellFerrante, William Kennedy, Bob Mintzer - have maintained an extraordinarily highquality of musicianship that is the rival of many but a surprise to no one who knowsand appreciates the band and their music.

The most recent addition to the band adds bass player Dane Alderson in to the mix.Dane hails from Sydney, Australia but now lives in the United States. Dane brings anew energy to the band and a unique and youthful approach to the music. He grewup listening to the Yellowjackets never actually realizing that he would somedayjoin them on stage as a member of the group. It’s a testimony to his high level ofgroove and rhythmic sensibility, that Dane fits right in. It’s as though he’s alwaysbeen here.
