    DomesticViolenceistheleadingcauseofinjuryanddeathtoAmericanwomen.Itisestimatedthat50percentofallhomelesswomenandchildrenarefleeingdomestic

    violence.Childrenundertheageof12residein43percentofhouseholdsinwhich

    domesticviolenceisreported.Violenceinthehomeisamajorfactorcontributingtothe

    growthofreportsofchildabuseandneglect.

    Nooneeverdeservestobeabused,especiallywithinthecontextofanintimate

    relationship;allindividualsshouldhavetheopportunitytoexercisetheirrighttodefine

    theirpersonalrelationshipsandspacesasviolence-freezones.Domesticviolencetext

    hotlinesareneededtohelpincreaseaccesstoresourceslikeshelters,womenandchild

    protectiveservices,andotherDVsystemsofcare.Researchshowsthatwomenaremorelikelytoseekhelpwhentheycantextinsteadofcall.InapollconductedbyWIC,

    over95%ofyoungmomsownacellphoneandwouldchoosetokeeptheircellphone

    activatedoverallotherpossessions.Over97%saidtheytexteveryday.GenerationYs

    havecometoexpectsocialservicesbeavailableviasms.

    PreventionPaysTextnowmakesitpossiblefordomesticviolencehotlinestoaugment

    theirphonesupportwithenterpriseleveltwo-waytexting.Domesticviolenceservice

    providersknowthatvictimsandsurvivorsareoftenfacingverydangeroussituations

    wheretheirlivesmaybeunderimminentthreat.Makingavoicecallcouldincrease

    theirrisk.Theuniquenatureofsmsenablesvictimstobeincloseproximitytotheir

    perpetrator(eveninthesameroom)andstillbeabletosendtextswithoutthatpersonknowing.HelpingDVvictimswasoneoftheincitingfactorsbehindtheFCCpursuing

    agreementswiththemajormobilecarrierstoenabletextingto911.

    ResearchShowsTextingMakesAskingforHelpEasier

    Newdatademonstratesquantitativelyandqualitativelythatyoungergroupsprefer

    usingtexttodiscussemotionalissues.Earlyadopterstriedtoconverttext

    conversationstovoicecalls,however,thismethodwasquicklydismissedas

    ineffective.Inalmostallcases,whenaskedtomovetoacall,thetexterwouldrefuse,or

    worse,optout.Hotlinestaffrealizedthemeresuggestionwouldoftenresultinprematuretermination.

    SimilarstudiesontextbyUniversityofMichiganandUCBerkeleysupportthetheory

    thattextispreferredwhenindividualsarerequiredtotalkaboutemotionalissuesor

    reflectontheirpersonalhealth.

    contactingthehotlinesbecausetheyareincrisis,facingseriousissueslikebullying,self-

    harm,eatingdisorders,abuse,domesticviolenceorthoughtsofsuicide.Theyareusing

    thetexthotlinesasalifeline.Whileitmaybedifficultforsometoimaginesuicide

    preventionishappeningin160charactersorless,thosewhousetheservice,the

    hundredsofpeopletextingthesehotlineseveryday,couldn'timagineitanyotherway.
