Requirements of Past, Present, and Future
E.D.G.E. system (2006) was the surveillance tool of choice for data collection.
Required multiple pieces of equipment: Bar code scanner, laptop, PDA, GPS card, numerous computer updates, a personnel support.
Time consuming: Required daily upload and download to the laptop.
System has proved to useful, yet complicated and expensive to maintain due to the total number of parts and old technology.

2009-Migration to Android Smartphone. This single device replaces the bar code scanner, program and the computer/PDA.
EpiCollect Data Collection system (Imperial College) – Open Source (O/S) is Free and data collected in a relational type database system.
Requirements: 3rd party contract for Software support ($$$).

ODK (Open Data Kit) Collection System –Univ. of Washington) – is chosen by Taskforce and the DOLF Project
Open source Android based O/S compatible with the Smartphone
Non-relational database collection system. Individualized surveys are easily constructed and linked to the Person ID
Requires Google Account for Data storage (Cloud technology), Google Docs application for the Smartphone and data can be auto-summarised to an accessible web portal.
Additional contracting is NOT needed. ODK’s core developers are researchers at the
University of Washington’s Department of

ODK SYSTEM VERSUS EPICOLLECT Overview of Expenses:
3rd party support contract is not needed.
Free ODK Program, Google Gmail Account, Docs App, Cloud, Bar Code Scanner App.

No need to develop desktop based applications
Easily create uncomplicated surveys to country’s needs and language
Easily back up data onto a netbook and the cloud via 3G or Wi-Fi

Linked to only one variable (Less complicated)

USING ODK COLLECT
Step 1: Click on ODK Collect Step 2: Select “Start New Form”
ENTERING DATA INTO ODK COLLECT
To start a new form click Start New Form. The number indicates
how many forms you have to available.
Before clicking
Save Data
and Exit,
check the box
Mark Data as
Finished! Forms will have one question
per screen and you will move
between screens by swiping
your finger across the screen
from Right to Left

Note: If you see a number
other than 0 next to “Send

1.The number next to the Send Finished Data button
should be zero
2.Open the Google Docs app on your phone to see if
the data is on the server
3.Go to the web portal and follow the link to Google
Docs
4.Go to the web portal and follow the link to Maps
