Both mother and child are protected against tetanus and neonatal tetanus.A series of 2 doses of Tetanus Toxoid Vaccination must be receivedby a woman one month before delivery to protect baby fromneonatal tetanus. And the 3 booster dose shots to complete the 5 dosesfollowing the recommended schedule provides full protection for bothmother and child. The mother is then called as a “Fully Immunized Mother”(FIM).

Neonatal Tetanus is one of the public health concerns that we need to

address among newborns. To protect them from deadly disease, tetanus toxoidimmunization is important fro pregnant women and child-bearing age women.

EXPANDED PROGRAM ONIMMUNIZATION

• The EPI was launched inJuly 1976 by the DOH incooperation with WHO andUNICEF.

• The original objective wasto reduce the morbidity andmortality among infants andchildren caused by theseven childhood diseases.

• A fully immunized child:receives one dose of BCGand Hepa B at birth, 3 dosesof OPV, 3 doses of PENTA,and 1 dose meales vaccinebefore the child’s 1st

birthday.

IMMUNIZATION is the process by which vaccines are introducedinto the body. VACCINES are administered to induce immunitythereby causing the recipient’s immune system to react to thevaccines that produce antibodies to fight the diseases.

Republic Act No. 10152“Mandatory Infants and Children Health Immunization Act” of 2011

signed by President Aquino III in July 26, 2010.The mandatory includes basic immunization for children under 5

including other types of diseases determined by the DOH.
