“As your awareness of what’s going on with your dog increases, your frustration decreases.” Susan Garrett
Anything can be a Hot Zone provided it is clear for your dog. What can you use?
________________________________________________________________________
Keep criteria clear for your dog by selecting a Hot Zone with sides or that is raised.
Once your dog understands the Hot Zone game, it can have many uses. It’s a place that will earn your dog reinforcement for what you want him to do. It is safe and will give him confidence and trust in the framework of a game he knows and loves. • When visitors arrive. • When a courier arrives. • Around the dinner table. • When you are working at your desk. • When you are walking down the street. • At a veterinary clinic. • On walks for taking photos. • Nail trimming.
Where is the value for your dog? ____________________________________________

Creating Value for the Hot Zone
Have the foundations of the “Oh No, What Is It?!” game first.
• Be close to whatever you are using for your Hot Zone. • As soon as your dog goes near it, say “search” and drop a
cookie in the Hot Zone. • Repeat 3 times, dropping cookies in the Hot Zone. If this is
brand new for your dog, you could increase the cookie drops in the bed to 5.
• The next time throw the cookie away from the bed, so your dog gets out of the Hot Zone. • Go back to throwing the cookie in the bed when your dog is near it. Remember to use your “search”
cue before you throw the treat. • When your dog has all paws in the Hot Zone, say “search” and throw a cookie away from it. • We are creating value for your dog being in the Hot Zone. You will know you are getting a transfer
of value when your dog starts choosing to go his Hot Zone. • Wait for your dog’s choice and be patient. There’s no need to say stay or make your dog get into the
Hot Zone. • When your dog is going into the Hot Zone, you can hand him cookies, and release him from the Hot
Zone with “search” and a cookie throw. Create clarity for your dog about being in the Hot Zone and when he can move. Reinforcement will build the behaviour you want!

Your Gem from Session Five Gems Shared About Session Five “Clarity is about finding where the value is for our dog and
rewarding their choices. Even though we have set criteria
about when to reward, the dog is still free to choose and to
learn by making mistakes. I love how gentle Susan is when
helping her dogs get back into the reward zone. I aspire to
be just as patient with my own dog!” Brynn
“Susan's first GEM - As your awareness of what's going on
with your dog increases your frustration is going to
decrease - I look at this as the M in the GEMS. Mindfulness!
Always mindfulness when you are working with your dog.
Helps to know if they truly have clarity on what you are
asking of them by being aware of what's going on, what
choice did they make, if they are afraid of something being
mindful/aware enough to change their state of arousal
before trying to get them back to what you are working
with. Mindfulness also creates clarity for you as the trainer.
Thank you Susan for all the steps you are building for our
clarity, to stay mindful, which also creates kindness!” Susan

Advancing the Hot Zone Game
• Build value for your dog being in the Hot Zone. If you use a marker word like “yes”, say the word before you give a cookie.
• Release your dog off the Hot Zone by saying “search” and tossing a cookie away from it.
• When your dog goes back to the Hot Zone, say “search” and throw the treat in the Hot Zone.
• Continue to build value for your dog being in the Hot Zone, and release off the Hot Zone every so often.
• You can start to move around and vary your position while your dog is in the Hot Zone, but stay close, and keep reinforcing your dog’s good choices.
• Add a small distraction by releasing your dog off the Hot Zone with “search” and turning and facing away from the Hot Zone. Will your dog go back to the Hot Zone with you facing away?
• Keep reinforcing your dog’s good choices. Every time your dog chooses correctly, you are helping him understand where the value is.
• Be fair to your dog, set him up for success and protect his confidence.
How will you grow the game while protecting your dog’s confidence?

Introducing a New Release Word
The word “search” is a release cue for your dog to get the treat on the floor when you throw it. Remember that “search” comes before you toss the cookie. We’re now adding a new release word “break”. You might already use “okay” but that is a word said so much in daily life that it’s possible it will not be clear for your dog. With your dog in the Hot Zone, say “break”, pause briefly, say “search” and have your dog get a cookie in your hand away from the Hot Zone. Repeat a few times and then drop the word “search” when your dog is getting off the Hot Zone when you say “break”. Break is a release cue so your dog knows he can leave position. Search is a release cue for your dog to get cookies you have thrown on the floor. When you are playing training games with your dog, use your release cues to give your dog clarity. You don’t need to use a release cue when you are just hanging out together.

Your Dog is Doing the Best He Can
If you have a struggle, remember that your dog is doing the best he can with the education you have given him in the environment you are asking him to perform. What are the key learning points from the demonstration of Tater tugging?

Your Gem from Session Six
Gems Shared About Session Six “Choice based training develops confidence and trust in
your dog. As trainers, we have to learn to RELAX and allow
the dog to make a choice, “based on the environment and
the education we have given them”. If it’s not the choice
we were hoping for, we need to reassess and build more
value for what we want. Too often we lean over our dogs
and glare at them, trying to will them to make the “good
choice” we want. This has been the root of many of my dog
training mistakes. Looking forward to more joyful training,
full of true and unbiased choices.” Brooklyn N York
“Gem - let your dog train you with their choices, they are
better at being a dog than you are.” Marie
“Keep the trust between you and your dog. Every correct choice builds confidence and relationship. We as trainers need to build and protect that confidence.” Jeannie

Adding a Cue to Your Hot Zone
You are ready to add a cue to your dog going to Hot Zone when he instantly jumps back in after he has got the cookie you threw after you said “search”. The cue Susan uses for Hot Zone is “hop it up”.
• Play the Hot Zone Game. • When your dog goes straight back to Hot Zone after the “search”
you are ready to add the cue. • Start with your dog in Hot Zone. Say “search” and throw the treat
as you do in the foundations. • Before your dog gets back into Hot Zone, give him a couple of cookies. Then stop giving cookies and
say “hop it up”. Because of the value you have built for going to the Hot Zone, your dog will go straight there when the cookies stop.
• When your dog is in the Hot Zone, celebrate and reinforce!
At this stage your dog will not understand what “hop it up” means, but when you stop giving him treats, he’ll find the last thing that earned him cookies, and that is the Hot Zone.
By putting the cue on in this way we are building drive and excitement for your dog to want to get to the Hot Zone. Your dog will soon learn what “hop it up” means. Only say your cue once. From now on, every time you play, you can use the cue for your dog to go to Hot Zone.
Troubleshooting: If your dog goes to get back in the Hot Zone after you release with “search”, call him back to you for the cookies. If your dog does not choose to go back into the Hot Zone, revisit the foundations, build more value, and then come back to adding a cue when your dog is ready.

Your Gem from Session Seven
Gems Shared About Session Seven “My GEM/Aha moment is a culmination of "if you're
furious, get curious " and the success loop. If I'm starting to
get frustrated/upset, I need to stop and turn inward to see
why. In my training it is most likely a missed step in the
success loop that I need to go back to. When I'm frustrated
with my pup, it is about me, not her .” Debbie
“Big Gem for me today was be kind. Kindess breeds respect.
Respect for ourselves and our dogs. This allows us both to
make mistakes and learn from them. Be kind also allows us
to choose the teaching methodologies that resonate for us
and our dogs because that shows respect for our core
values. Kindness grows respect, grows love and reminds us
to capture the joy in every moment in our dog training.”
Jess
“Behavior is communication! Observing, journaling, being
present, and patient will help me hear my dog so I can
adjust my technique to become a better trainer for him.” Chris

growing her understanding. Challenge her but always keep
in mind the environment and absolutely ensure her
CONFIDENCE. By building on the layers we can achieve a
partnership for life.” Shirley
“Do not compare the skills of you and your dog with the
future or a perfect dog, but with where you were

“My GEMS for today. 1. It’s important and necessary to
focus on the gap you’ve achieved rather than the one you
still need to ford. 2. I’m not alone in the challenges I’m
having with my puppy. He is doing what puppies do and I
expect him to act like an adult dog. By changing my
expectations, I will have more opportunities to increase his
capabilities. 3. I am in need of a plan of how to navigate this
gap - the mechanics of how to get there. There is hope.”
Karen
“Celebrate the gap! That’s the space between what you
have...... and where you want to be with your dog’s
behavior. The training fun fills the gap!” Karla
