Dog obedience classes

by Nadia Mis,P7

Every Wednesday for the past two and a half years my dog

Chloe and I have been going to Castlereagh & District Dog

Training Club. It has taught me so much about positive dog

training methods and how to make my dog want to cooperate. I have to say, that it takes a lot

of work and patience ( blood, sweat and tears as well),

especially if you have a beagle who wants to ignore you and sniff the floor! Training classes helped me know how to

stay calm and to get my dog's attention back. When you join, the trainers will show you basic obedience tricks that need hand signals, teach you some tricks and how to play safely with your dog. Then, slowly, you move into more advance training and learn how to communicate clearly with your dog and your dog learns how to respond

to cues. I am also involved in the feeding process at home. I tell Chloe to “sit and stay” while I put down a bowl of food, and then command her to go to it. I have a very special

relationship with my dog that all of my family are jealous of.

On 11th January I took the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme - Bronze Test. I was very nervous but luckily

Chloe was very obedient when doing tasks and we passed! I received a certificate and a rosette and Chloe got a big bag of treats. After the exam I had a picture taken with my trainer Lisa who got me to where I am today. She gave

me confidence and showed me how to work with Chloe. Now, we have started a new adventure in the Silver Class and we still have a long way to go. If you are interested in taking your dog to the

training classes, please ask me or visit their Facebook page.

Erin Burnett It was a great

pleasure to have one of

our Millennium past pupils visit us last week. Erin

Burnett, an upper 6th student at Victoria College in Belfast called in to talk to the boys and girls in P5, 6 and 7 about her debut novel – Liza’s Avenger. Erin always loved Literacy at Millennium and was always keen to write stories. When she was 13 she wrote the first draft of her novel and after lots and lots of

rewriting and fixing, she finally got her book published.

During assembly Erin spoke to the children about her memories of her

time at Millennium. She enjoyed reading, writing stories and playing with her friends Kerry and Rhianna – both of who are now characters in

her book!! We were very lucky to have Erin read an extract from her

book. It certainly sounds like an exciting adventure. After Erin’s presentation the boys and girls

were able to ask lots of questions. At the end, Mrs Roulston presented Erin with the honorary Golden Goal

trophy for all her achievements.

We really enjoyed Erin’s visit and look forward to hearing about her

next book.

Integrated Education Week is a very important time in our school timetable and Mr Gardner always makes sure that we celebrate in style! This year’s theme was

"Remembering the Big, Small stories" and it all started on Friday 3rd of March when Millennium IPS attended the celebratory walk at Stormont to mark 35 years of

integrated education in Northern Ireland.

On Monday 6th March we had the launch of Integrated Education week in school led by P5 assembly which was very thought provoking and showed us the importance of working well together. It is now a tradition that Mrs Roulston and Mr Corrigan to award one boy and a girl from P7 who are showing the real spirit of integration

throughout their time in our school. This year it was Jack McConnell and Ella McAuley who received the trophies.

We had such a busy time, filled with activities for the whole school. We really enjoyed Drama sessions where we could show our creativity, especially when it came to acting like jungle animals! During the Ceili - Irish dance we jived and jigged to "I'll tell me

ma" and "Bridge of Athlone". The children commented on their way out of hall "… oh it was so tiring, my legs are aching!"

All of us, including the adults, truly enjoyed the visit from the storyteller, Eamonn

Keenan, who took us into the world of tales from near and far… The KS2 children enjoyed the meeting with the local politician Jonny Orr who told us about his job and why he wanted to be involved into politics. The children interviewed

him and the questions ranged from "What do you think about Transfer Tests?" to "What's your favourite sea creature?".

The next event was a Table Quiz where the 18 Millennium teams had their knowledge

tested and brains turned upside down! It was followed by the Dodgeball competition and the Dorito Dudes won for the second year in a row with The Barcelona Boys coming

second! However, Mr Gardner had a prize for the Best Dressed and it went to The Epic Emoji team. Yeah!

The atmosphere was buzzing among the P7 class in the Spelling Bee competition. The finalists were working incredibly hard at this challenge and should be very proud of

themselves! After a number of nail biting rounds we had the last man standing battle between the twins - Rosa and Luka Carew! However, the overall winner was

Rosa who will go to the County Down Finals. Well done!

As part of "Connecting with the local community" project the P4 Junior choir went to Cedarhurst Lodge Residential home where they sang WW2 and assembly songs. They brought back many good memories for the residents and left lots of smiles

on their faces!

To end such an exciting and busy week the whole school went to the Omniplex cinema in Lisburn to watch Sing! Just imagine going to the movies with 300 of your

friends! We had great fun and really enjoyed sharing this experience together!

P1 assembly P1M were having lots of fun learning about Polar Animals in the Arctic. They have been doing lots of activities during play which help them to learn more about the topic. They made their own igloo out of plastic milk bottles where they enjoyed dressing up in warm clothes! In the water tray they played with Arctic animals and were pretending to be polar explorers on a mission to rescue trapped animals. During their learning they listened to lots of stories about snowy animals but their favourite was "Lost and Found". They loved the story about the adventures of a lost penguin and the boy who helped him find where he belonged. This was the theme of their class assembly. We enjoyed listening to their beautiful action singing and we learned lots of facts about how animals keep themselves warm. All the children looked so cute wearing their penguin and polar bear costumes! After the assembly they had a party with hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and a chocolate fountain. Wow! I wish I was in P1 again….

The Sacraments

On Friday 3rd February our Catholic P3 children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It was

another step in their Faith journey and a

chance to say sorry to God for the things they have done to hurt God,

others and themselves. As our school has an inclusive ethos all the classmates

went to the church to support their friends and participate in the service.

After the mass everybody came back to school to have a big party. The parents were served delicious treats by our helpful Parents'

Council. Everybody looked very happy. Thank you to Mrs Ballard and Mr Donnelly for helping the P3 classes.

On Thursday 9th February the P7 pupils

were confirmed in church by Bishop Patrick Walsh. The Confirmandi were so excited to be taking this next important step in their journey of Faith. We were also very im-

pressed with their singing and active participation as

they led us through the Mass and received the

gifts of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Mr Corrigan for preparing them for

this Sacrament.

Art-z Crafts

The creativity of

children in our school has no limits! The

Friendship Club in P7 had an idea of making sensory balloons. They

proved to be very popular among their friends and that’s where the idea of

selling them came from. Together they designed the posters and agreed on price. They managed to sell all the balloons

and collected over £119. All the money will be

donated to the National Autistic Society NI. Well done for having

this great idea!

NI science workshop

On Friday 24th February, P6 went on a special trip to Castle Court Shopping

centre! No we weren’t buying Mr Mawhinney presents- we were going to a ‘pop up’ Science workshop organised by the Science Gallery from Trinity

College Dublin. It was all part of the NI Science Festival that ran from 16th to

26th February!

When we arrived we were told that we would be making a “doodle-bot!” which

looked really complex! However, after being introduced were much more relaxed and started to work! First, we attached a motor to a paper cup and then added a weight. We then stuck ‘legs’ on our bot before placing felt tip pens on! Lastly we tested out our Doodle-bots. They made a crazy

pattern! It was a really fun day and we really enjoyed ourselves! Lorcan said “I thought it was really interesting and something different!” Hannah said “It was great fun, but you had to be careful with

the glue gun!”

Ahoy Pirates!

To end their Pirate Topic,

all the P2 children celebrated by coming to school dressed as pirates

and taking over our school!. They had a day filled with pirates’ adventures! From

early morning they were busy following clues on a treasure map to find lost gold; sang pirates sea shanties and made

biscuits filled with maggots! Yuck! In the hall the teachers created a Treasure Island and

the deck of a pirate ship. Our pirates went to explore and were pretending to be crew mates… However they were

afraid that the Pirate (Mrs) Roulston might want to steal all their treasure and gold! They came up with a very

sneaky plan and managed to capture Captain Roulston! What's more, the naughty pirates made her walk the

plank!! They had so much fun fitted into one day! We also enjoyed a Pirates’ class assembly for P2W and

Mrs White wrote her own play script. It told the story of the Pirate Roulston who had a dream and wanted to have

an Integrated Island where all pirates could play together. Luckily, all the crew members thought it was a great idea!

It all sounds a bit familiar…

Netball

Netball has always been very popular in our school and lots of girls play it as a hobby in

and after school. All the girls who qualified for the A and B teams are practising hard and putting the skills they learn in sessions with

Mr Gardner into good effect.

Recently, the teams have been very busy playing lots of matches and qualifying

for the Belfast Finals!! On Thursday 6th of April

the teams played the finals in the Lisburn Racquets Club and the A team won all their matches. Now they are on their way to the Northern

Ireland Finals!! Well done girls!!

Have you heard about Millennium school pupils becoming comedians?

They got a taste of making a crowd laugh during a special joke competition.

It was all part of the Voice Box Joke event – organised by the JBOG as part of the national Giving Voice

language campaign.

The JBOG distributed the posters, spoke to all the classes and asked the question, "Are you the funniest

pupil in our school? "All the children had previously been asked to write down their best joke and bring it into school. Each class chose its two favourite and the 22 finalists told their joke during the school’s morning

assembly.

Mrs Roulston helped the JBOGs with judging all the jokes which proved to be really difficult… We were so proud of our comedians and all who took part were presented with a certificate.

Please scan the QR code to listen to our finalists.

Pancake Tuesday

"What did you have on top of your pancake?" and " How many did you eat?"

Those were very popular questions heard on Pancake Tuesday as the aroma of freshly made pancakes filled

the whole school and staffroom . It was also a great opportunity for all

the children to learn about writing instructions together and measuring

ingredients. We had lots of fun making and eating

yummy pancakes. Some even dressed up for the occasion!

World Book Day On Thursday 9th of March we celebrated World Book Day and the whole day was dedicated to the

joy of reading and sharing books. Throughout the day the children and teachers were thinking about their own special book in order to share it with the rest of the class. In P3B all the pupils

brought in their favourite book and told their class why they love reading it. Our P1 and P2 classes had an amazing time wearing pyjamas and holding their teddies while their

teachers read them their favourite books from their childhood. The rest of the school was searching around for "Wally" which Mrs Fitzgerald hid extremely well!

For every successfully completed search there was a certificate as a reward. There is still one "Wally" hiding in the school? Can you find it?

Also every child received a £1 Book Token that could be used as a part of payment towards a new book.

ICT Club

This term during Wednesday afternoon activities, the KS2 children have been enjoying

ICT club with Mr Corrigan. So far they have experimented with Spheros which look like an ordinary ball, however they can be linked up

with iPad’s and off they can roll! When the boys (sadly only boys decided to join the club)

became familiar with coding the Spheros they had to build chariots out of K'nex so the ball could fit comfortably. When all the designing and

coding was completed they had ‘Robot Wars' with Spheros in chariots in the playground. What fun! The boys also had an opportunity to code on Scratch; to programme Micro-bits as thermometers and add coordinates to Pro Bots, which enabled them draw shape designs . Mr Corrigan was very impressed by what some boys achieved all by themselves and he commented, "I feel like I am in

safe hands now".

Peace Proms

On Sunday 26th February our P5 class took part in the Peace Proms event in the SSE Arena. What a fantastic day it was

as they were singing as part of a choir of almost 3000 children! They all sang along with the famous Cross Border Orchestra

conducted by Greg Beardsell. All the songs were great fun and ranged from One Direction " History" , Fleur

East " Sax" to "I can't stop the feeling". However they all decided that their

favourite was " Together we are one". The boys and girls were fantastic with

their singing and keeping the spirit of the day!

We just want to

say thank you to all the families and

friends who came to watch us

perform. Lastly, a big thank you to Mr Gardner who

looked after us and joined in with the

singing and dancing as well… hmm

Rock Star

Recently we had a real taste of rock music during a drumming assembly presented by Mr Duffy who teaches drumming in our school. However, the

biggest surprise was Tom Crozier (P4T) and Ben Cooke (P7) who rocked the audience with a

performance of AC/DC’s "Thunderstruck"!! Ben explained " I started playing drums when I was in P4 and now I am practising at Mr Duffy's Belfast Drum Academy. I enjoy playing drums so much!". We overheard some children commenting on their way out off assembly " It was awesome! I want to

play drums as well",and even "It was the best concert ever!!"

Whale Adventure

Rossa (P5) and Oscar (P3D) McNulty were en-joying a family walk on

the Castlegregory beach in Dingle, Co Kerry. Sud-

denly they came across the carcass of a Pilot whale. Rossa said " It was massive and really stinky!" The

whole family was joking that it would make a good appe-tiser on Mr Gardner's Viking Party table in P5. Luckily,

they decided to leave it where they found it… phew!

Quails

P5 class had a unique opportunity to witness the beginning of the life cycle

of a bird. Rachel John-ston's dad brought in an incubator and some tiny quail eggs to be looked

after. After a long wait the P5's finally came to school and realised that the eggs had

hatched! However, then the real work began...

The children took turns to be on the "bird watch" which included feeding, watering and cleaning up after the small chicks. Mackenzie said " We didn’t mind cleaning all the poops

because the birds are really cute!" The whole school was very excited and tried to stalk all

the P5's and their classroom. Mr Gardner and Rachel's dad took turns to look after the

chicks at the weekends. When they grew strong-er and bigger, Rachel's

dad took some birds home and left 7 in school. The remaining ones were

moved to a big cage in the resource area and

the children decided to organise a competition to give them names. Here are the winning ones: Fluffy, Cristal, Twix,

Lucky, Miracle, Skittles and Silver.

Eco friendly

Millennium IPS has been very busy over the last few

weeks with their new approach to handling waste! Our Eco Committee led the

assembly for the whole school and they introduced

the new changes to recycling.

Each room has been fitted with a waste bin for dry recyclables and a compost caddy in order to help reduce the amount of waste going straight

to landfills. The kitchen staff washed and reused old containers- so we didn’t even have to

buy anymore! This movement was started by our Eco-Committee with help from the Primary

6 pupils. Everyday all pupils (and staff!) separate their waste into different bins then the P6 children collect it and put them into larger separate bins! We have reduced our waste by 33% but the Eco-Committee has a

target of 66% by the end of the year! Keep up the good work everyone!

Art Club During Wednesday Art Club the children learned about ‘Mardi Gras’ and how it is celebrated all over the world, although its name is different in some countries and it

can be called Carnival. This particular holiday is celebrated on the day of Lent which is on Fat Tuesday

and wearing a Mardi Gras mask is one of the most well- known traditions.

The children made their own carnival

masks and Lisa Foster provided decorating trims in the festive colours of purple, green, red, blue and orange. They also glued on some sequins, feathers and jewels.

When they had finished designing masks they were practicing mask face painting on each other. All our

artists looked very festive and colourful.

Wedding celebrations

You will not believe what happened in P1 Chicks!! All the boys and girls were really excited about Miss McClements getting married so they decided to plan and organise their own wedding! At the

creative table, the children designed wedding invitations and sent one to Mrs Roulston. They were all delighted when Mrs Roulston

accepted. When their guest of honour arrived for the ceremony she was

presented with a fascinator to wear! The children had been doing each other's hair, prepared handmade flowers and Toby was the

photographer. They had a few couples getting married and walking down the aisle on that day! After the wedding there was a bit of

a dance for the evening reception, song singing and party food which was provided by some parents. It was so much fun!

Gardening Club

After such cold and wet weather, the Gardening Club have enjoyed sunnier and milder afternoons. They did some digging and raking to prepare the ground for spring and painted signs for the vegetable beds. So far they have been chitting potatoes and planting seeds to grow herbs such as chives, oregano and parsley. We look forward to seeing them grow! Recently they were making their own Cress Heads! They used compost,

tights, googly eyes and paint for decoration. All the gardeners were very creative with their designs and made an Emoji, Ninja, Troll and many more Cress heads. Now the heads need lots of watering so we can see their hair growing!

Easter Raffle Emma Norton in P4H had a great idea. She decided to donate her beautiful new pink bear and organise an Easter raffle. The fundraising is going well and

she sold lots of tickets! Her family decided that all the money will be donated to our school charity, The

National Autistic Society. The winner will be announced on the last day of term,

when her sister Holly in P2F will choose the lucky ticket. Watch out, it might be yours!

Victorian Topic

This term the P3 classes have been learning about what life was like in Victorian times.

Some things they have learned about include: Queen Victoria, Victorian inventions, life in Victorian homes and the very difficult lives

many Victorian children had living in the workhouses.

The children were also learning about the

classrooms which were completely different to our classroom today and how strict and scary the teachers were. The children were amazed when they learnt about school rules and the timetable for Victorian school children. It

made them feel very nervous and scared!. Mrs Roulston came to visit and told the children about her experience of being in primary school, which wasn’t during Victorian times as some children thought!! We compared that to our stories

and we were glad that our school is not like those in Vic-torian time or when Mrs Roulston went to school.

P3D class prepared an assembly which told us lots of facts about Victorian times and made us laugh with many

funny sketches!

In P3B the children were doing observational oil pastel paintings using fingers to mix colours. They were looking

at the objects and toys which were popular during Victorian times such as the cane, slate and a chimney

brush. They had lots of fun when their classroom trans-formed into a real artist’s workshop. You can see the art

work displayed in their classroom.

Gaelic News

On 24th of February the boys’ Gaelic team went to the County Down Finals in An Riocht GAC. They played very well and qualified to the semi-finals. However, in the

last game they were narrowly beaten by 1 point by the eventual winners. Mr Donnelly and the boys were very pleased with

the overall performance but disappointed not to have won the tourna-

ment. Marcus and Cal-lum said "We were so

close! ". We are still very proud of you boys!

On 10th of February Mrs Magee and the girls Gaelic team went to St Joseph’s Primary School for the indoor Gaelic tournament. They had a chance to play with some challenging teams and were exhausted when they came

back. Well done girls for taking part and trying your best!

Past Pupil, Jacob Taylor Mrs Roulston is always very happy to see past pupils coming back to our school. Recently we had Jacob who came to do his work placement in the P6 class. We could hear lots of sighs and comments , " Oh, I feel old now…" from the staff members who remember Jacob as a small boy in P1. Our JBOG reporters, Kiera and Iona interviewed him to find out a little bit more. What do you study? I am currently doing an Honours Degree in Childhood Studies in Nottingham Trent University. What do you think of Millennium then and now? The school has changed so much since I was here, the technology, buildings, equipment, teachers. I would

have definitely preferred to be in your shoes! What did you do at break and lunch? I was always playing football with my best friends Robert Quinn and Jack Holden. We were always spinning the ball right from the bell until the end. Who was your favourite teacher? I really enjoyed Miss Grew who is Mrs Heatherington now and Mrs Roulston was my P1 teacher. I was very emotional and sad when it was time for me to leave the school. On Jacob's last day in our school he was reunited with Lynne, the classroom assistant who used to work in his class. He added, "If you were ever in trouble Lynne was always there to help you, no matter what!"

Caterpillar

You won't believe this story! Back in October, when Daisy was in the Kids

Corner she found a cocoon on the ground. A big and plump Cocoon! She wasn’t really sure what to do with it

and decided to keep it in the P5 classroom. The very next day Daisy's friend Katie decided to help out. The girls looked up some information on the internet on how to look after

cocoons. Guess what! It is April and they spotted some wriggling and

slight movements in the jar where the lucky cocoon slept throughout

the winter! Now, the whole class is so excited and they are waiting for the

miracle of survival to happen! The beautiful butterfly… let's keep our

fingers crossed!

P4H Poetry

P4H have been learning about Kenning poetry with Mrs Magee. In this type of poem an object is described in a two word phrase, which normally end in 'er' word. They are very similar to a riddle and people have to guess what the poem is about. We had lots of fun creating them and we even wrote one called Magic Box as a class.

Please scan the QR code to listen to some examples of our hard word. Have fun!

Meet the Iron brothers Our JBOG reporters Ben and Ella went to find out a little bit more about Ruairi (P3B) and Riley(P1M), who recently joined our school.

Before they came to Millennium they lived in Pretoria, South Africa for 2 years! Riley said, "It was so hot there. We were

wearing t-shirts and shorts every day. " They really liked their school because they played lots of sports and cricket was Ruairi's

favourite. The teachers were really nice there, just like in Millennium and they are missing a lot their class friends.

The boys also told us that every day after school they splashed in their swimming pool which was in their back garden. Our reporters

were very jealous! Their favourite food there was Biltong which is a dried meat and the most interesting place they visited is called The Cradle of Humankind. Ruairi

said "We travelled there by boat. It is a museum with a lot of caves inside and the grass is growing over it". Wow!

Ella and Ben were very surprised to hear that the brothers agree with everything! They don’t even like sweets, only healthy food !They are the cutest brothers ever! Thank you for chatting to us!

P4T school trip As part of the World War 2 topic in Primary 4 we visited Lisburn Linen Museum to learn more

about war time . We discovered more about life as an evacuee, rationing and air raids. We visited a bomb shelter in Castle Gardens,

and some of us tried on the gas masks and wore army hats. We also

learned lots of facts about

linen and that flax has

beautiful blue flowers. The

part we enjoyed the most was the demonstration of spinning and

weaving. We had a

brilliant time!

Fairtrade By Luka Carew and Max Foster, P7

On 27th February the P7s each made a Fairtrade chocolate bar and wrapper. First of all they had to do research on what they should base their chocolate bar, design a wrapper and then make their bar.

It took a lot of work it but it was worth it! They all made wonderful creations from Choco-cherry to Punch the Crunch and Delicious Disco Discs.

Most children melted their chocolate and added different ingredients but others made it from scratch. The chocolate went from normal to food coloured. The wrappers were dazzling and very imaginative. There was so much chocolate some-one even took it in a mop bucket (It was really just a box that said Mop Bucket). The day was a blast! Luka and Max quoted "I don't

think I could eat any more chocolate," but they still ate a lot more.

The P7s also had to make a presentation to persuade Mr Corrigan to stock their products. The chocolates we made was Fairtrade

which is helping people in third world countries deal with poverty and despair. Mr Corrigan thought the presentations were great

with jokes and live reviews which made them even more enjoyable. Everybody enjoyed the day and we were all lucky no one was sick! It was a great experience for the P7class to be part of in their

last year in Millennium.
