Does the same etiquette apply
when you are on holiday?
The simple answer is yes, despite what
documentary makers about Brits
abroad in places like Ayia Napa might
have you believe – you really ought to
behave with the same amount of
panache and courtesy as if you were in the UK.
Although, the thing about of holidays is that standards are
relaxed slightly, and so there are some exceptions.
Whereas you would always give up your
seat in the UK when needed, if you have a sun lounger and a
women is struggling to find
one, you don’t have to let her on to
yours, they really do work on a first come, first served
basis.
And although you might expect to tip
after a meal at home, if you’re in a resort or all inclusive then there
is no need to leave any cash after every
meal – though on your last day you may want to visit your favourite haunts and leave a
little thank you.
Other than that, try and behave like an ambassador for British gentlemen
whenever possible. Open doors, pull back chairs, and say thank you in
the same way you would in your day
to day life. When in Rome….do as you
would at home.
Remember to take some formalwear with you,
men’s suits and men’s shirts are
indispensables, and if you do not feel like taking a suit, think
chinos and a blazer. You never know what can come up during your
holiday... Always try and maintain the British gentleman’s image
abroad.
