The Pu‘ukoholā Heiau on Hawai‘i Island is a sacred site in the Hawaiian culture. Its presence is grand, not only because of its size, but also in the role it played in the unification of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

The heiau was constructed between 1790 and 1791 on the Kohala Coast. It was at a time when Kamehameha the Great was at a crossroads in his quest to rule and unify the Hawaiian Islands. And while he would eventually fulfill that prophecy, it came with great sacrifice.

The film Ho‘oku‘ikahi: To Unify As One, originally released in 1998, documents the 1991 ceremony that marked the 200th anniversary of the consecration of the Pu‘ukoholā Heiau. According to filmmaker Meleanna Aluli Meyer, “This was done as a recommitment to the place, to the culture and to the traditions and protocols. To not only enliven our practices, but to give us really, the courage that we needed to begin again ... because this is a constant renewal.”

It was also a chance to heal wounds of the past, bringing together twoclans who were historically torn. “We have been able to create and toenvision and to work toward a message of healing, of reconciling andcoming together …” says Meyer.

Kumu hula John Keolamamaka‘āinana Lake learned the appropriate rituals and protocols for the 1991 ceremony and was later appointed as kahuna nui, or chief priest, of the heiau. To mark the 30th anniversary of the film’s documentation of the ceremony, it will include a recent interview with Meyer and two of Kumu Lake’s students, Māhealani Wong and Sam ‘Ohukani‘ōhi‘a Gon III, PhD.

Pu‘ukoholā Heiau is a national historic site under the stewardship of the U.S. National Park Service. Its living history continues to be perpetuated in ceremonies and events each year, but were put on hold in 2020 and again this year because of the pandemic.

All photos were taken by Franco Salmoiraghi in August of 1991 during the event to commemorate Ho‘oku‘ikahi, a ceremony of reconciliation and reunification at Pu‘ukoholā Heiau in 1791.

HO‘OKU‘IKAHI: To Unify As OneThursday, July 29 at 8:30 pm

John Keolamamaka‘āinana Lake, center, kahuna nui (chief priest) of Pu‘ukoholā Heiau in Kohala, Hawai‘i Island, gives instructions to alaka‘i (helpers) participating in Ho‘oku‘ikahi ceremonies in 1991.

Descendants of the Ka‘ū chief Keōua Kū‘ahu‘ula and those representing Kamehameha proceed together to Pu‘ukoholā Heiau to take part in Ho‘oku‘ikahi ceremonies in 1991.

How Much Tourism Is Too Much, and Who Decides?

Thursday, August 26 at 7:30 pm

Hawai‘i’s visitor count has come roaring back much quicker than experts predicted from the nearly empty days during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 recovery may not hit the record 10.4 million set in 2019, but the resurgence has raised concerns from the community to limit the number of tourists. Join us for KĀKOU: Hawai‘i’s Town Hall where we’ll discuss what the possible next steps are for Hawai‘i’s number one industry.

KĀKOU, meaning “all of us,” is a periodic series of live town hall events where we speak and listen to each other while recognizing that we are all in this together, even if we don’t always agree.
