    1 INTRODUCTION

As part of the Licensing Support System (LSS) Task 2 work on determining the feasibility of priorityloading of the LSS, a computerized database was prepared and used to store the results of the Center forNuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses (CNWRA) survey. The database was implemented using the DatabaseManager and Query Manager facilities of the OS/2 Operating System, Version 2.0. During theimplementation of the CNWRA survey database, a number of Structured Query Language (SQL) querieswere developed and used to analyze the survey data. The results derived from some of these queries wereused in the report entitled Lessons Learned from the CNWRA Survey About the Feasibility of PriorityLoading of the LSS (LSS Task 2 Report), while other queries were simply used to investigate aspects ofthe data. The following documentation describes the relational database tables and major queries whichwere developed and used in the preparation of the Task 2 Report. This documentation is intended to beused as reference information by users who are familiar with the facilities and operation of the OS/2Database Manager and OS/2 Query Manager.

A number of SQL database tables were created and loaded with survey data. Chapter 2 includesdescriptions of these database tables and the columns (fields) which comprise each table. The databasetable descriptions are intended to provide reference information for the user of the survey database toclarify the contents of the SQL database and the significance of table names and column names used inthe SQL query statements. Additionally, if the data in the survey database is to be migrated to a databaseenvironment other than OS/2 Database Manager, then the information in the table descriptions may beused to create appropriate tables in the new database environment to hold the survey data.

A large number of queries were developed in the course of the CNWRA survey to explore and analyzethe survey data. Only a limited number of these queries were actually used, however, to produce thetables and information contained in the LSS Task 2 Report. Therefore, the query documentationconcentrates on these queries. Chapter 3 includes descriptions of the major queries which were used inthe preparation of the Task 2 Report. Each query description contains a brief narrative Oiscussion of thequery and its use as well as a listing of the SQL statements executed by the query. The SQL statementsare included for reference, but are not required by the user when executing the query.

Several computer programs were written in the REXX language and were used under the OS/2 operatingsystem to manipulate and print the survey information. Chapter 4 includes brief descriptions of theseREXX programs. These programs have been copied to diskette in ASCII format, and they may bereloaded and executed in an OS/2 environment, or they may be converted to an alternative language ifthe database is to be implemented in some other environment. These REXX programs are auxiliary innature and they are not critical to the operation of the database.

Following suspension of the LSS Task 2 work, the database tables and queries were unloaded to diskettemedia using the OS/2 Database Manager recovery utility facilities. The source code of the REXXprograms was also copied to diskette media. Chapter 5 describes the machine readable mediaaccompanying this report, which contains the survey database data and the supporting REXX programs. The survey database data is included on diskette in two formats:

    1-1

  • * The standard unload format which permits the entire database with all associated queries andpresentation formats (forms) to be reloaded on another machine configuration using OS/2Database Manager.

    * Delimited ASCII format which permits the data from each of the tables to be loaded and intoother database environments. It should be noted that the SQL queries and forms used tomanipulate and report the data are not included in the ASCII format data because they aregenerally specific to the OS/2 Database Manager environment.

    2 DATABASE TABLE DEFINITIONS

The following sections describe the contents and intended use of the relational database tables in theCNWRA Survey database. Following the general description of each table, the individual table columns(fields) are described. The bold print heading for each column (field) includes the internal SQL name forthe column (e.g., ACTVACCS), the type and maximum length of the data (e.g., SMALL INT,VARCHAR (254), etc.), an indication of whether or not null entries are permitted for the column (e.g.,NOT NULL), and an indication of whether the column is a primary key for the table (e.g., PRIMARYKEY).

    2.1 ACTIVITY TABLE

The survey information pertaining to activities is stored in the activities database table. Forpurposes of positive identification and conservation of database space, each activity is defined one timeand is assigned an arbitrary accession number which is used internally to relate the activities to theirassociated respondent and document information. Activity accession numbers were assigned manually. The descriptions and dates for each activity occur only once in the database. Thus, if the descriptionand/or dates for an activity are changed, those changes are automatically reflected in all subsequentreporting.

When the activity information was entered, relational table entries were also generated usinga REXX program to associate the activity information with the appropriate respondent and documentinformation. Because documents were related to the activity information, it was necessary to identify anactivity before entering the document records that are to be associated with it.

ACTVACCS SMALL INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY

The activity accession number is a unique number which was manuallyassigned as theactivity information was entered. Normally, the user does not need to be aware of theactivity accession number, but it is used within queries to relate activity information to thecorresponding document and respondent records.

    ACTVBEGDATE DATE NOT NULL

The beginning date associated with an activity is stored to facilitate sorting of activities bydate. This date field is reformatted by the appropriate Query Manager form for purposes ofprinting.

    ACTVENDDATE DATE NOT NULL

The ending date associated with an activity is stored to facilitate sorting of activities by date. This date field is reformatted by the appropriate Query Manager form for purposes ofprinting.

    ACTVDESCR VARCHAR (254) NOT NULL

    2-1

  • 0 0

The activity description is a variable length text field which contains a brief description ofthe activity.

    ACTVPARTICPANT VARCHAR (20) NOT NULL

The activity participant contains a standard abbreviation or acronym for the participantorganization (e.g., DOE, NRC, CNWRA, etc.).

    ORGDIV VARCHAR (15)

The activity organizational division contains the standard abbreviation or acronym for theorganizational division of the responsible participant (e.g., HLW, RES, etc.)

    PROG VARCHAR (25)

The program contains the standard name, abbreviation, or acronym for the program withinthe organizational division (e.g., THERMOHYDROLOGY, STOCHASTIC,VOLCANOLOGY, etc.).

    ELEMENT VARCHAR (10)

The element contains the standard abbreviation or acronym for the responsible element (e.g.,GS, RDCO, EBS, PA, etc.).

    2.2 AUTHOR TABLE

The author information for all documents is stored in a single database table. For purposes ofpositive identification and conservation of database space, each author name occurs only once and isassigned an arbitrary accession number at the time of entry. This accession number is used internally torelate the authors with the document records.

AUTHACCS SMALL INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY

The author accession number is a unique number which is manually assigned at the timethat the author record is entered. Normally, the user does not need to be aware of the authoraccession number, but it is used by queries to relate the author records to their associateddocuments.

    AUTH_LNAME VARCHAR (30) NOT NULL

The author last name field is a variable length text field which contains the last name of theauthor.

    AUTH_F_NAME VARCHAR (30)

    2-2

  • 0 0

The author first name field is a variable length text field which contains the first name ofthe author.

    AUTHINIT VARCHAR (10)

The author initials field is a variable length text field which contains the middle initial(s) ofthe author.

    2.3 BLDAUTHOR TABLE

The BLDAUTHOR table is a relational table which contains the linkages between authors anddocuments. By using this relational table, it is possible for a single author to be associated with multipledocuments and for multiple authors to be associated with a single document as well. These relationshipswere established and maintained manually as the documents were entered into the system.

    BLDACCS SMALL INTEGER NOT NULL

This field contains the unique accession for the document.

    AUTHACCS SMALL INTEGER NOT NULL

This field contains the unique accession for the author.

    2.4 BLDDOCS TABLE

The survey information pertaining to documents is stored in the BLDDOCS database table. For purposes of positive identification and conservation of database space, each document appears onlyone time in this table no matter how many times it may have been referenced. Each document record wasmanually assigned an arbitrary accession number which is used internally to relate the document recordsto their associated respondents, authors, subject keywords, document types, document sources, andpriority categories through other relational tables. Since the information pertaining to a document isentered only one time in the database, if any data fields are changed for a document, the changes willautomatically be reflected in all subsequent reporting.

BLDACCS SMALL INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY

The document accession number is a unique number which is manually assigned at the timethat the document information is entered. Normally, the user does not need to be aware ofthe document accession number, but it is used internally by queries to relate documentinformation to other database tables.

    BLDSUBJ VARCHAR (254)

The subject field is a variable length text field containing a brief description of the subjectmatter addressed by the document. This field was parsed using a REXX program to createthe DOCSUBJ table.

    2-3

  • 0 0

    BLDTYPE VARCHAR (100)

The document type field is a variable length text field containing a brief description of thetype of documentary material(s) referenced by the entry. This field was parsed using aREXX program to create the DOCTYPE table.

    BLDTITLE VARCHAR (254)

The document title field is a variable length text field containing the full title of thedocument.

    BLDBEGDATE CHAR (8)

The document beginning date is stored in the form YYYYMMDD to facilitate sequencingand selection of document records by date. The document beginning date is reformatted forpurposes of printing. When the document date is entered as a date range, the beginning dateis entered in this field. When the document date is entered as a single date value, the dateis replicated in both the beginning and ending date fields. The date is left-justified in thefield. If only a year is entered, then the last four characters of the field are blank. If onlya year and month are entered, then the last two characters of the field are blank.

    BLDENDDATE CHAR (8)

The document ending date is stored in the form YYYYMMDD to facilitate sequencing andselection of document records by date. The document ending date is reformatted forpurposes of printing. When the document date is entered as a date range, the ending date isentered in this field. When the document date is entered as a single date value, the date isreplicated in both the beginning and ending date fields. The date is left-justified in the field. If only a year is entered, then the last four characters of the field are blank. If only a yearand month are entered, then the last two characters of the field are blank.'

    BLDSOURCE VARCHAR (254)

The document source information is stored in a variable length text field.

    * For reports, this field indicates the organization which originated the material(s), and ifthe material(s) was originated by a sub-contractor, then the subcontractor name alsoappears in this field.

    BLDEASEACCESS SMALL INT

The ease of access field is a small integer field which contains the respondent's estimate ofthe relative ease (or difficulty) of obtaining access to the documentary material(s) other thatthrough the LSS. This information is encoded as a small integer with a value between I and5, where 1 indicates a document which is readily available and 5 indicates a document whichis difficult to obtain. If no estimate is available, this field contains a zero.

    BLDVALUE SMALL INT

The value of material(s) field is a small integer field which contains the respondent'sestimate of the relative value of the documentary material(s) to the repository program. Thisinformation is encoded as a small integer with a value between 1 and 5, where 1 indicatesa relatively unimportant document and 5 indicates a document which is critical to therepository program. If no estimate is available, this field contains a zero.

  • 3 QUERY DESCRIPTIONS

The following sections describe the contents and intended use of the major queries which support the dataand conclusions of the Task 2 report. The sequence of the query descriptions follows the sequence of thequery selection list in Query Manager from which the user may choose a query for execution. Many ofthe queries have associated presentation formats called "forms". These presentation formats provide pageheadings, specification of field widths, and other formatting information. In general, the form for a querywill have the same name as the query itself. Each query may be executed either by a "RUN" command, which will use the Query Manager default presentation format, or by a "RUN USING" command whichwill use the specified presentation format (form).

Each query description begins with a bold heading which contains a description of the query and, inparentheses, the name of the query. A general description of the query and its intended use follows thebold heading. After the general description of the query, the SQL statements executed by the query arelisted. These SQL statements are included for reference, but they are not needed by the user in the normalexecution of the query.

The SQL statements associated with a number of the queries include enumerations of document types ordocument sources in their selection criteria. These queries are, in fact, selecting subsets of the surveydata. Therefore, the subsets of the data to be included or excluded are specified in the SELECTstatements of these queries.

The SQL statements associated with other queries include explicit numerical values in conjunction withthe document accession number. These queries are selecting data from the survey database by surveyphase. The first phase of the survey included 383 responses. Therefore, by selecting accession numberswhich are less than 384, only responses from Phase 1 of the survey will be included. Similarly, byselecting accession numbers which are greater than 383, only responses from Phase 2 of the survey willbe included.

Other queries include explicit numerical values which are used in the denominators of expressions (e.g.SELECT A.DOC TYPE, COUNT(*), (100.00 * COUNT(*) / 213) ...... ). These queries are calculatingpercentages, and the explicit values are used to avoid a complex and inefficient sub-query which wouldotherwise be required. The numerical values used in these queries were all developed from other querieswhich count the occurrences in various groups of data. The names of all of these "count" queries beginwith "Cl" or "C2".

The queries and presentation formats which were prepared and used in conjunction with the CNWRAsurvey are specific to this database and the OS/2 Database Manager and Query Manager products. If theinformation in the CNWRA survey database is to be migrated to another database or hardware/softwareenvironment, then the queries will need to be generated in the new environment. The SQL statementsincluded for each of the following queries should be portable to any SQL compliant database but thepresentation formats would need to be developed using the facilities of the target database product.
