Looking Between Truth And Fiction
Catalonia is a land of documentary filmmakers. The story of the genre developed here with groundbreakers like Joaquin Jordà, who created a unique school that has since influenced talented directors such as Marc Recha, Isaki Lacuesta and Laia Manresa, amongst others.
Catalan documentary-makers turn their lenses on reality without forsaking the creativity of storytelling or of looking between truth and fiction, and that is what sets them apart. Our productions have been distinguished with the most prized awards from the Oscars to the IDFA, Hotdocs and Berlin.
Here you have a catalogue of nearly one hundred new projects, for both cinema and television, broaching a wide range of subjects and relevant to international audiences.

This is the story of four characters, four stories that emerge in a single common backdrop of corridors, cells and waiting rooms, of distressed faces and lost looks, of absurd and enigmatic gestures, in a large Mental Health Hospital somewhere on the outskirts of Barcelona.
The human panorama and the daily activity of the vast hospital complex mark the chronological development of the story. For a period of one year covering all four seasons, the lives of the four characters intersect in this arena due to a single, shared cause: all four suffer from psychosis, each in a different way.

When Abid is on land, he can’t go a day without visiting the port, even if he has nothing to do there. It’s a custom he picked up during his childhood in Alhucemas. A custom that was interrupted when he came to Barcelona and had to work for 5 years caring for the elderly to get by and to get his papers in order. Later, however, as soon as he could, he would go back to fishing.
Abid has been a host for many of his fellow countrymen who are now working aboard fishing boats as sailors. What’s more, he is one of the few fishermen in Barcelona who still know how to mend nets.

Some dead trout, a polluted river, political leaders who couldn’t care less and a town that was tired of putting up with it all.Nobody would have imagined that a few dead trout in the waters of the Arnoia River would end up toppling an entrenched municipal government and intense the townspeople into challenging the incompetence of several municipal leaders who had become tyrannical in their ways. For once the cry “the people united will never be defeated” was imbued with meaning.

The population density on the high plateau of western Castile-Leon, falls below the level that international organisations consider to be characteristic of desert areas. The results are virtual ghost towns where the only residents are elderly locals who have never had either the opportunity or the courage to leave.
Two opposing phenomena coexist in this scenario. On the one hand is emigration, represented by those who abandoned their rural homes. And on the other hand are the new residents, who have given up urban life to embrace a new lifestyle in a more authentic, stimulating environment.

The voice-over of an anonymous Guinean exile who inherited a river when his father passed away, and who recalls, from the distant desert, childhood episodes, popular legends and old African beliefs, leading us into the turbulent past of Equa-torial Guinea. The film deals with an unfamiliar subject: the Spanish colonization of this African country and the political, religious and cultural legacy that emerges after the declaration of independence on October 12, 1968, from the blood-spat-tered times of Francisco Macías’ dictatorship to the current regime of his nephew, Teodoro Obiang.

For the traditional fishermen of Cala Ratjada (on Majorca’s east coast), the fishing routine does not exist. Throughout the year the goals of the fisheries change up to five or six times, as do the fishing techniques.
In the year 2000, when the Llevant Natural Park was created, the fishermen requested that the government create a marine reserve to regenerate the natural local ecosystem in the waters. Seven years later the reserve was finally created. This is the largest marine reserve in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Spanish Civil War made a great impression on the lives of most of the Ame-rican artists of the 20th century. Numerous films made in Hollywood at that time dealt with the event, and the defeat of democracy in Spain left an open wound in the heart of liberal actors, directors and screenwriters. The life of screenwriter Alvah Bessie, who fought in Spain in 1937 as a volunteer with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, is representative of this sentiment. This is an original approach to one of the most controversial subjects of our times: the relationship between film industry and politics.

Image Hunters is a documentary about people who believed in documentary film even before it was considered a genre. It is also a heartfelt tribute to a number of forgotten pioneers, some of Spain’s last great film adventurers.

Shot in Cameroon and Brussels, this documentary explores the world of African antiquities and the contradictions in a European art market hungry for new tribal objects.
Where do the African masks come from? Who determines the economic and aes-thetic value of these objects now that colonialism is supposedly dead? And then there’s a continent called Africa, in need of economic resources and therefore willing to sell its cultural heritage or, if need be, to fake it. The authenticity of the objects becomes blurred when the people that once adored them start to sell them.

Krokodillos On The Road covers the tour of the Dixieland band, Los Krokodillos, through several gigs and festivals around Denmark. Formed in Barcelona by Mikha, a Russian banjo player who arrived in this city after playing on the streets through Europe and Asia, Los Krokodillos is an international band with musicians from England, Australia, Japan and Spain, who, for one reason or another, coinci-ded in Barcelona. After their beginnings on the streets, where they played till the City Council enforced a new by-law banning street bands with over four members, Los Krokodillos began to seek new horizons.

To the north of Lanzarote, separated by a narrow strait that the locals have dubbed El Río (“The River”), sits La Graciosa, the smallest inhabited islet of the Canary Archipelago. With 26,000 square metres of dry volcanic soil, the island was colonised at the end of the 19th century by a small settlement of fishermen who sought the shelter of Caleta del Sebo to create a salted fish factory that would never prosper.In this report we visit La Graciosa with Miguel, a young man who has come to live in Barcelona because it is hard to find work on the island that he so dearly loves.

The story of both the glorious and frustrating years of one of the teams that founded the Spanish football league. Club Deportivo Europa went through a long decline which was to last until the fifties. Persecuted for its affiliation to the Republican party, once the Spanish Civil War ended the club reappeared and from its ranks rose such legendary players as Ramallets and Gonzalvo III. During the sixties it achieved the golden dream of the Second Division and beat Real Zarago-za, champion of the Generalisimo’s Cup. The club then fell into oblivion once again and re-emerged in the nineties to win two Catalonia Cups.

This is the story of an “ordinary, everyday” woman who was born in 1902: Maria de los Reyes Castillo, Reyita. Reyita was a poor black woman, a victim of racial discri-mination since her childhood, yet she nevertheless rebelled against the destiny that her era had in store for her.
Sidestepping her husband, Reyita helped other women – many of them prostitutes – to look after their children, she was an active member of the Popular Socialist Party, shared the ideas of her guerrilla sons and fought small daily battles to chan-ge not only her home, but the world at large.

He later travelled to Peru as a UNESCO envoy, where he studied the country’s arid zones, promoted the first archaeological excavations and discovered the world’s deepest canyon. Given that he was forgotten by all, this documentary aims to retrieve his memory.

Each January two car rallies hit the road for a crossing from Europe to the West African coast. One is the huge, expensive, spectacular machinery of the Rally Dakar. The other is the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge, an adventure that embodies values completely opposite to those of its counterpart.
The Challenge is simply to drive the route from Plymouth (UK) to Banjul (Gambia) in cars whose nominal value cannot exceed 300 euro. In other words, to drive old bangers for over 6,000 kilometers with practically no money and no mechanical assistance, all in good humor.

One of the non-military apparatus developed by the US during its Cold War against the USSR was Radio Liberty. This documentary provides information and testi-monials from the early years until it became necessary to build the most powerful radio station of the 20th century, the only transmitter capable of penetrating soviet jamming. This station was built on the beach of Pals (Costa Brava, Spain). Inside the station three former employees take us on a tour of the operative details of the station and describe the programming and content broadcast by Radio Liberty.

A Topography of Memory is a reflection on how public and private institutions around the world have managed remembrance locations, in other words, how a group of people relates to its past through elements that are recognised in both the imagination and reality at the same time. It is interesting to see how the preva-lent lack of memory in Catalonia and Spain for many years is not an isolated phe-nomenon. Forgetfulness is a mechanism of memory and, with a few exceptions, it has been the predominant explicit or implicit norm in most countries with a traumatic past.

In the 1930’s, modern industrial technology put to the service of war created a new situation: massive, instant, indiscriminate destruction, affecting both soldiers and civilians. Barcelona was the first city ever to be systematically bombed from the air. Between March 16-18, 1938 Barcelona was attacked non-stop, day and night. In those two days, thousands of people lost their homes and more than three hun-dred lost their lives. These events were not only tragic for Barcelona, but were also determinants in how the fateful Second World War would be fought.

At the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th, the industrial revolution made it possible for wealth, power and influence to accumulate in the hands of certain families, a process similar to the one that occurred during the Italian Re-naissance. So emerged the Thyssen-Bornemisza family as a paradigm of success in Central Europe, thanks to opportunity, opportunism and a number of marital alliances. An alliance of industry, money, scandal, sex and art that began in Villa Favorita, in Lugano, and continues to the present day at the Thyssen Museum in Madrid.

Every family has its secrets. My grandfather was executed by firing squad after the civil war for committing three armed robberies. Was he an anarchist or just a common thief? No-one has ever known. The person who could have helped in my search for an answer was my grandmother, Leonor, but she suffered from senile dementia and has already passed away. The only clue I have is a name. This per-sonal journey reflects upon the loss of historical memory and the search for one’s own identity.

My father suffers from schizophrenia. Yes. I’m saying it loud and clear. And I want everyone to hear it: my father is a schizophrenic. And I love him, and my brothers and my mother love him, too. But it’s been tough to cope with his disease, under-stand it and come to terms with it (if we’ve ever really managed to).
Each family is a world in itself, and I’d go so far as to say that if each of us were to place a camera in our homes, we could make a documentary. It goes without saying that life outdoes fiction. I’m going to put a camera in my home.

Yago is a boy who suffers from dwarfism. At age 12 he decides to undergo a number of surgical procedures during a four-year period to lengthen his legs by 15 cm and his arms by 9 cm. This will make him taller and improve the quality of his life. Afterwards, he has to get past the long and difficult process of learning to walk again. Nevertheless, after 4 years of surgeries and rehabilitation, Yago, now 16 years old, is happy to resume life as an average adolescent, just like his friends. Through Yago’s eyes we find out the difficult medical, social and personal conse-quences of this disability.
