ABSTRACTThis updated resource guide for foreign language
educators contains information on resources and services that canhelp enrich the classroom instruction. it is also designed for thosewho are concerned with the study or advancement of foreign languagesand cultures. Information is provided on 149 foreign language serviceorganizations and 68 publishers and distributors of foreign languagematerials. A language index is included. Two major sources ofinformation and services relating to the teaching of English as asecond language have also been included: Teachers of English toSpeakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the English Language Divisionof the British Council Central Information Service (formerly theBritish Council English Teaching Information Centre. For each serviceorganization, information is provided on: the president, foundingdata, source of funding, number of staff, purpose, subject area,grade level, services, geographic area served, newsletter,publications, and projects in progress. The listing o publishers anddistributors includes the address, phone number, and contact pe'sons,when known. INTRODUCTION
Purpose
This directory is an expanded and updated version of
the Directory of Foreign La u e Service Or aniza-tions, which was first pu is ed by the Center forApplied Linguistics and the ERIC Clearinghouse onLanguages and Linguistics in 1978 and revised in1981. Thirty-four new organizations have been addedsince the last edition. The directory is intendedto provide foreign language educators with a con-venient reference guide containing information onthe availability of resources and services that canhelp them enrich classroom instruction. It is meantto be useful as well to all those who are concernedwith the study or advancement of foreign languagesand cultures. Two major sources of information andservices relating to the teaching of English as asecond language have also been included--Teachers ofEnglish to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) andthe English Language Division of the British CouncilCentral Information Service (formerly the BritAshCouncil English Teaching Information Centre).
Organization
The directory is divided into three sections:Foreign Language Service Organizations, Publishersand Distributors of Foreign Language Materials, andthe Language Index. Organizations and publishers/distributors offering services or materials relatedto specific languages may be located in the indexunder the language itself or under such broader
terms as "Foreign Languages, General," "UncommonlyTaught Languages," "African Languages," "EastEuropean Languages," etc.

How to Use the Directory
This directory may help the reader in several ways.For =ample, a teacher of Italian may want infor-mation on Italian culture. The index should be con-sulted under 'Italian" for organizations andpublishers focusing specifically on this language.Or a school may want to develop a new Spanish cur-riculum and would like to provide inservice trainingfor teachers after the curriculum is adopted. Thelist of publishers indicates those that offer inser-vice training. Individual organizations may also bechecked under "services" to identify those that pro-vide consultant services.
We welcome suggestions for future additions to thedirectory and have provided n form on page ix forthis purpose. Please note, however, that the onlyacademic language-teaching programs that we includeare those that offer communit outreach services toteachers and students o

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) is anationwide network of information centers, eachresponsible for a given educational level or fieldof study. ERIC is ..upported by the NationalInstitute of Education of the U.S. Department ofEducation. The basic objective of ERIC is to makecurrent developments in educational research,instruction, and personnel preparation more readilyaccessible to educators and members of related pro-fessions.
ERIC/CLL. The ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages andLinguistics (ERIC/CLL), one of the specializedclearinghouses in the ERIC system, is operated bythe Center for Applied Linguistics. ERIC/CLL isspecifically responsible for the collection and dis-semination of information in the general area ofresearch and application in languages, litTuisticsand language teaching and learning.
LANGUAGE IN EDUCATION: THEORY AND PRACTICE. In
addition to processing information, ERIC/CLL is alsoinvolved in information synthesis and analysis. TheClearinghouse commissions recognized authorities inlanguages and linguistics to write analyses of thecurrent issues in their areas of specialty.
