To the Reader:

This 1981 Directory of Mental Health Programs and Resources for Hearingtlmpaired Persons his the first product to result from two studies conducted

by the Gallaudet,Research Institute., The first study, conducted with sup-port frin the National Institute of Mental Health, Bought to describe ser-vices for hearing- impaired patients in state psychiatric hospitals andother clinical facilities throughout the country. The second study focused

on identifying and describing mental health serVices for hearing impaired t

children, some of which are located in agencies other than those whichprovide services to adults.' This Directory, therefore, encompasses a broad '

spectrum of institutions and' individuals who have indicated that they pro-

vide mental health services to hearing impaired persons. It was not our

purpose, nor was it within our capability, to evaluate programs or toverify in any sense the information they repoitedlto us. We have 'simply

listed here the relevant program, informatibn as provided to us by represen-tatives of the program or practitioner.

This Directory is organized alphabetically'by state, then subdivided intoprograms and resources. Programs were defined.as mental health serviceunits specifically designed to render cktnical services to hearing impaired

persons in need of mental health treatment. Typically they are a part of a

psychiatric hospital, a menta), health clinic, or' a school program.Resources were defined, as specific agencies or private practitioners whichare not formally organized spedifiecally as a mental health facility forheaving impaired persons, but who routinely admit hearing impaired indivi-

duals for clinical services. The information presented in this Directory

pertains to the programs or services for hearlpg.pmpaired patients only,

not to the services or programs of the larger, bat institution which sup-

ports the prograq`forlhearing impaired persons.S-

The information about the mental health progreMs andresources in thfi''Directory ispresented'irr-eve .categories, as follows: .

The Director is the identified head, coordina tor, or director of theservice unit for deaf persons, or the identified resource individual

. tocontact regarding services for hearing impaired persons.

\The Services Oovided are described as type oC service, population

served and patient status.

Type\of Service offered may include therapy, Id treatment,.

spe-

cial, educaticin for emotionally disturbed hear ng impaired.1

children, counseling, or halfway house services. Consultation

.and - evaluation services are generally available fromprogrammand resources although not specifically ide9tified as specificservice's by most respondents. Units designed to serve a popula-tion with multiple handicapping conditionscbuch ad mentalretardation in addition to deafness, are identified as such.
