This institutional self -study is basd on dataavailable for Wilbur Wright College from 1968 to 1974, and includesdata pertaining to three areas: enrollment, the American CollegeTesting (ACT) profile, and student characteristics. Enrollment datashows distributions under categories including: day and evening'enrollments, withdrawal and r tention, program area, class, adult
:?education, grade diStributio , age, and sex. Comparisons withenrollments of past years ar provided, as well as with enrollmentsof other institutions. The ACT profile shows a declining academicstandard of entering freshmen over the years, and a lower score forWright as compared to the scores of all Illinois community colleges. However, the mean high school GPA of Wright students has increasedover the yearspata are also provided on students' educationalaspirations and proposed educational majors. Student characteristicsselected for analysis from computer printouts .of the student
. characteristics reports for Wright include: student load .
distributions, earned college credits, rank in high school graduatingclass, future plans, mobility patterns of transfers, programs oftransferS, ethnic distribution,"ages, strident distribution within a4-mile radius of the" college. Data are organized into 36 tables and29 figures. (NHM)

PREFACE
In order to see the trends, and the direction in which Wright College is
Moving, an institutional self-study of this kind was long overdue. Five years
ago Dr. Ralph Smith (presently Dean of Arts and Sciences at Wright) prepared an
Institutional Data Report which dealt only with the information available for
1969 - 1970. The present study is based on data available for Wright College
beginning, in some cases, from 1968 up to as far as 1974
This study includes data pertaining to three areas: The Enrollment, The
ACT Profile (information on the entering Freshmen at Wright), and The Character-,
istics of Students at Wright. Tht Enrollment Study also includes comparative re-
tention figures.
Figures for this report have been compiled from various sources, which
include federal agencies, such as, HEW, state agencies, such as IICR (Illinois
s,
Community, College Board), as well as 'Wright College regfatimtion figures and such
other research studies prepared by the Office of Institutional Research at Wright.
Mike Zimny (graduated 1975) and Sterling Respass prepared the graphs and
figured for this report. Maria Luberda typed it and also helped Mike and
Sterling. They worked as.student-aids for this office. I am very, thankful for
their help in the preparation of this study. Dr. Henry Moughamian, Coordinator
of Research, ity Colleges of Chicago, kindly took time to review this report,4
I am very tt for his suggestions And comments.

Philosophy and programs of an educational institution cannot be very
effective without a periodic look at its achievements and shortcomings. This is
especially true for a public Community College. The potential of Community
Colleges in Illinois, and particularly in Chicago, is unquestioned;\although,
its current status needs much improvement. An institutional profile such as
this could become an indicator for improving tte product (the, Student), the?f
program (currictia), and the professional teaching. It is hoped that the faculty
and the adminis' ration will shots a genuine interest in the data analyzed and
presented here, and will work out new strategies of coping with problems and
needs emerging in the immediate future a; Wright College,

. COMPARISON AND TRENDS OF ENRO
10
=*4,
The enrollment data reported in this study shows the enrollments distributed,
under varioUb categories. Comparisons are also 'provided with the enrollments(.N
of past year's as well as with the enrollments'of other institutions., The study
also includes comparative figures of Wright College retention and withdrawal data,-grade distribution, and, distribution of st dent ages.
This report repAsents student's enrolled instructional program areas in
the Wright College as of the end of registration or approximately the tenth day'
of the Fall tem. Enrollments are' also reported in terms of the_ number of students
enrolled on campus only, excluding the Adult Education Program, TV College Program,
and Overseas Program enrollmeilits. A graph showing, the remarkable increase in the
adult education enrollments is shown separately.
,.ame highlights of this phase of study are as follows:
* Figuret1 indicates a 10 percent change in Fall 1974 total enrollment at Wright
over Fall 19730 while Fall 1973 shows a 15 percent change over Fall 1972 in
total enrollment at Wright. While the overall enrollment on campus, full fan
part-time, dropped in 1974; the increase in adult education contributed t
the growth in enrollments.
* Noticeable growth has taken place in the part-time enrollment in the public
community colleges in Illinois. Wright College has been no exception.
As Figure.2 shows, between 1971-1974 more than half of the on campus
Wright students were part-time.
* As compared to 1971, the part-time enrollments increased by 2 percent
in 1972, and despite the fact that it dropped and levelled off, it was
still 15 percent more than the full-time enrollment in 1973 and 1974.
* The evening on campus enrollment was 3 percent more in 1974 as compared to
1971, and it was 2 percent more than the 1974 day-time enrollment.
* In comparison to 1973 there was a 7 percent overall decline in the withdrawal
'figure in 1974; it was 6 percent for the day and evening students respectively.4
As compared to 1971, th)u h, the withdrawal rate in 1974 dropped 10 percent.
The percentage of those receiving the F 'grade has increased consistently
19.
between 1971-1974. It is 5 percent more in 1974 than it was in 1971.
\,kthe 1 ent increIin the unclassified category (figpre 54 indicates
students who have earned credit beyond the sophomore, level.vir
* As evident in Table 1, the freshmen enrollment deClined cons derably in .
1974 while the sophomore increased. However, the decline in the freshmen
figure seems due to the reason that the Froehlich Report (University Bureau
Aof Institutional Research, University Office of Planning, University of'
A,Illinois, 1974), from where the figures, weretaken, includes freshmen having
0 hrs to 30 hrs, and sophotore from 31 hrs to 60 hrs.

SECTION II
PROFILE OF WRIGHT STUDENTS BY ACT PERFORMANCE
29
The American College Testing Program(ACT) provides varied research services
to participating educational institutions. More than 1,300 colleges and univer-s
-r
sities participate in these services each year. Results of the research conducted
through this program is useful to the faculty as well as administration in several
ways. It is useful in the understanding of the entering freshmen student body, in
"facilitating' proper e ucational planning and decision making, and in pro14ding
bettS services according to the needs of the indiVidual student.
The Glass Profile Service is one of the Research Services., offered by the
AT program, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the entering freshmen
class. It includes description of-the academic strengths and weaknesses of the
students who took the ACT test' motivation, needs, and expectatiOns. Thiso
profile of entering freshmen at Wright is based on these Class Profile Service
Reports.
A review of the characteristics included in this Profile could suggest to '
the faculty and 'the administration certain, approaches tnd pla4 so as to provide.,--
7 .
. .
more relevant and meaningful_ services to the newly incoming student at Wright
College
SOME H IGHTS OF WRIGHT COLLEGE ACT PROFILE (ENTERING FRESHMEN)
ACT Mean Scores
Table 1.3.clearly shows that the academic standard of the entering freshmen\
at Wright'has declined consistently over the year's. The ACT, composite for men
20
30
4
att
and women has declined fxom 17.7 in 1969-'70 to 15.6 in 1974-'75. This decline
is visible in all the four subjects, English, mathematics, social studies and
natural science.
Table 2 also shows a lower composite score and lower scores in the four subject
areas, for Wright (1971-1974), as compared to the scores of all Illinois community
colleges.
Tables 3 and 4 show low ACT scores in 1974 for Wright freshmen as compared-4--
to the scores of Illinois community colleges freshmen, all Illinois college bound
students, and national college bound students. It may be noted, though, that the11
total percentages indicating low composite scores for Wright are affected mainly
by the large number of Technical,-Occupational Program and General Studied Program
scores which fall mostly between 6 - 15 (79 percent).
High Schoal Grade Point (GPA) ,Averages (Mean)
ItAs interesting to note, as seen from Table 5, that although t enterin
