Japan

South Hill School believes that it is through deeper intercultural understanding that the world can achieve

peace. Hence, in addition to its eight-year run of its International Youth Exchange Program with San Ul Lim

Youth Center in Bucheon, South Korea and its annual participation in the Harvard and Yale Model United

Nations in the United States for two consecutive years now, South Hill School has again committed to

developing globally aware Filipino citizens by immersing some its students and teachers into another

neighboring country, Japan. From April 11 to 16, 2019, fourteen members of the school explored Tokyo and

Osaka to have a first-hand experience of the Japanese way of life and culture. Aside from the regular tourist

destinations, these South Hillians were able to visit and observe two schools in Osaka, Poole Gakuin Junior

and Senior High School and Poole Gakuin Kindergarten.

Prior to the trip, one part of the participants’ preparations was to see to it that they are aware of the

different Japanese culture. They spent significant amount of time studying a detailed list of do’s and don’ts

and did their research on how to behave appropriately in various situation. Through these, the importance

of having cultural sensitivity when travelling - to be able to demonstrate respect and appreciation for the culture

of the people in the place they’re visiting, was instilled in them.

From the trip, these South Hillians were not only able to broaden their horizons and gained insights

of the Japanese beliefs, culture and modern way of life; more importantly, this undertaking led them to

become culturally aware individuals who can empathize with those people of different cultural makeup.

It takes a village to raise a child, they say. But if that village remains stuck in its own microcosm, the

breadth and depth of a child’s learning may be limited. That’s why South Hill strives to continuously stretch

the borders of that ‘village’ and introduce the students to a borderless world.

As a way of meeting this challenge of understanding cultural diversity and globalization, SHSI headed

out, with its pioneer delegates of YMUN XLIV Conference, that was held at Yale University, Connecticut, USA

last January 17 – 20, 2018. It was composed of eight delegates, all from Senior High School.

The delegates underwent a rigorous training program on varied global issues, along with the

communication and social skills essential for global interaction. Theresa Mae Villanueva served as the Head

delegate. The trainings were spearheaded by SHSI Principal who served as the Head Advisor, Carmencita T.

Nolasco, along with other advisors, Amando Perfecto DLC. Molin, and Rosa S. Rolle, and Alfonso Christian

Casupang.

This was followed by another year of participation in the same event, YMUN XLV Conference last

January 17 – 20, 2019. This event was participated by thousands of delegates from different countries.

The delegation was composed of 20 Junior and Senior High School students, who all attended the

training programs in South Hill and MUN conferences held in the Philippines.

Four delegates and one Advisor proceeded to Harvard University, Massachusetts, to attend the 66th

Harvard Model University (MUN).

For both the YMUN conferences, the delegates were assigned to different committees, thus, enabling

them to mingle with delegates of different culture. They were also allowed to go out with the other delegates

after the conferences. This was an opportunity for them to share stories about Philippine culture and learn

about other’s cultures as well.

During the conference days, whenever the time allowed, the delegates and advisors toured the

campus, including the Yale University Art Museum and Yale Center for British Art.

After the 4-day conference, the delegates and advisors grabbed the opportunity to immerse into a

new culture, mostly American’s. From Connecticut, the delegation traveled to New York City. They

experienced the quite challenging process of riding a train, on subways – from identifying the exact station to

board and the exact destination to go.

In New York City, the group spent four days of immersion. In 2018, they stayed in an apartment, not

spacious enough for them but each one was willing to give a space to another. Each one had a task to fulfill :

cooking, washing the dishes, fixing the beddings, cleaning the room, running errands, and throwing the trash

in the bins with the right labels. Everybody was mindful not to break any rule in and outside the apartment.

However, in 2019, both groups in New York and in Massachusetts stayed in hotels. The immersion was

done before and after the conferences. The weather was not fine all the time; they had to adapt to a very cold

weather and to varying situations from time to time.

During the few days of immersion, the students, with the supervision of the advisors, strategized

schemes that helped them carry out their itinerary successfully. Those who were good in navigation led the

group. New York was indeed a big place, where busy people of different races, go to and fro. Hence, not all

the time, the journey went smoothly. There were times that they were lost but they took time to carefully

trace the right direction.

Page 39: DOCUMENT 3b: Kindness for PEACE Project Kindred Non Curricular · 2015 Youth Festival Cultural Presentation. South Hill School delegates were able to showcase traditional Filipino

SHSI students were fortunate enough to visit the following sights: Statue of Liberty, Grand Central

Station, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, 911 Ground Zero, Times Square, 5th Avenue, Museum of Modern Art

and a few more. Their visit to the Statue of Liberty was a standout. The group was able to appreciate the

history behind the neoclassical structure and its importance in the life of the Americans.

In the Strawberry Fields, everyone was amazed, seeing the “Imagine” marker dedicated to John

Lennon, as one of the world peace advocates. One of the highlights of the trip as well, was seeing “The Knotted

Gun” or famously known as the “Non Violence Sculpture” in the United Nations Headquarters. The students

were reminded once again of advocating for world peace and hope. Moreover, they saw the representations

of historic landmarks and the grandeur of the old New York in Grand Central Station. On the other hand, in

Times Square, they saw the modern New York wherein they experienced how it felt to be in the city that never

sleeps. Indeed, a memorable part of their visits in this well-lighted city was their Broadway show experience.

In the overall, awards from YMUN and HMUN decorated the students’ homecoming. But more than

the certificates, they came home with an array of culture-enriching experiences and character-building

milestones.
