SUMMER/FALL 2017: VOLUME 3, ISSUE 1 DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE (DNP) Program Summer/Fall 2017 Newsletter Annual Leadership Symposium Northeastern University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) 7th Cohort presented their DNP Scholarly Projects at the December 9, 2016 DNP Leadership Symposium in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree. Current DNP students, alumna, faculty and the broader nursing community were in attendance at this annual exciting event held at the Faculty Center on Northeastern University’s Boston Campus. STTI 28 th Research Congress Dublin A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Dr. Jennifer Clair (Gamma Epsilon Scholarship), Dr. Ethan Schuler, Dr. Lauryn LeGacy and Dr. Scott Weissman were nominated as Rising Stars of the Research and Scholarship Poster Program at this Congress. Bertha Lee, a current NU PhD student, was also a nominated Rising Star. Due to family and work issues at the last moment Dr. Legacy and Dr. Weissman were unable to attend. The Rising Stars presented posters of their DNP scholarly projects as did Dr. Debra Burke, Cl’16. I presented my own current research on toxic stress in preschoolers with my colleague, who happens to be my sister, Dr. Patrice Farquharson. We celebrated by hosting a Northeastern reception at the legendary Oliver St John Gogarty's inviting family, friends and faculty from the Boston area. I was asked to submit a blog of this event for STTI’s Reflections on Nursing Leadership (RNL) journal. (For those who are unaware Dr. Ethan Schuler is featured in the June RNL edition! Way to go Ethan!!!) I am relieved to state that I successfully wrote my first blog- Everyone is a Little Bit Irish if you Look Back Far Enough! Please visit https://postmarkdublin.blogspot.ie to check it out. We all took some time to experience the beauty of Ireland -Another successful international presence for our DNP program. Furthermore, 3 more DNP alumna, Dr. Jillian Belmont, Dr. Robyn Gagnon and Dr. Jennifer Matney, were chosen as Rising Stars of Research and Scholarship and will be presenting at the 44 th STTI Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA to be held this coming October. This newsletter reflects many more scholarly accomplishments and exciting endeavors across the nation and the world-we should be very proud of our DNP global outreach! Slainte! Annual Leadership Symposium

Northeastern University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) 7th Cohort presented their DNP Scholarly Projects at the December 9, 2016 DNP Leadership Symposium in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree. Current DNP students, alumna, faculty and the broader nursing community were in attendance at this annual exciting event held at the Faculty Center on Northeastern University’s Boston Campus.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dr. Jennifer Clair (Gamma Epsilon Scholarship), Dr. Ethan Schuler, Dr. Lauryn LeGacy and Dr. Scott Weissman were nominated as Rising Stars of the Research and Scholarship Poster Program at this Congress. Bertha Lee, a current NU PhD student, was also a nominated Rising Star. Due to family and work issues at the last moment Dr. Legacy and Dr. Weissman were unable to attend. The Rising Stars presented posters of their DNP scholarly projects as did Dr. Debra Burke, Cl’16. I presented my own current research on toxic stress in preschoolers with my colleague, who happens to be my sister, Dr. Patrice Farquharson. We celebrated by hosting a Northeastern reception at the legendary Oliver St John Gogarty's inviting family, friends and faculty from the Boston area. Dr. Jillian Belmont, Cl’17 is an acknowledged clinical leader in the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) Stroke program which received multiple recognitions in 2017: attained advanced certification by The Joint Commission; Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center; American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Silver Quality Achievement Award; and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll

Dr. Julie Cronin, Cl’16 sits on the Board of Directors of the ANA MA and was on its 2017

Conference Planning Committee.

Dr. Charles Darling Cl’14 and Dr. Mark Schierenbeck, Cl’16 were both promoted to the rank of Colonel in the United States Army reserve after approval by the U.S. Senate on September 15, 2016.

Dr. Michele DeGrazia gave the 2016 Lillian R. Goodman Lectureship in Graduate Nursing at UMass-Worccester.

Janet Dewan, PhD, CRNA DNP Faculty Advisor and Mike Butera, MS, CRNA, current DNP student, were awarded Bouve’s Simulation Faculty development grants in December 2016.

Dr. Justin Dilibero, Cl’17 in July 2017 was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN); appointed in November 2016 to AACN Adult and Geriatric Acute Care CNS (ACCNS-AG) Item Writing Committee.

Dr. Cathryn Imperato, Cl’12, is an NP at UC Berkeley's University Health Services and adjunct clinical instructor with the FNP program at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA.

Allyson Kayton, current DNP student, is a member of the Health Policy and Advocacy Committee of NANN and its representative to the LACE Network (Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education)

Dr. Kelly McCue, Cl’15 as Administrative Liaison for Brattleboro (VT) Memorial Hospital (BMH) Center for Wound Healing, accepted the “Center of Distinction Award” given by Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of wound care services in May 2017.

Dr. Elizabeth McGrath, Cl’15, a Nurse Practitioner in the Medical Oncology-Gastrointestinal Program, was promoted to Assistant Professor at Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in March 2017.

Dr. Leah McKinnon-Howe, Cl’16 was appointed Administrative Director and Nurse Practitioner, New England Conservatory (NEC) Health Center and in May 2017 received the prestigious Massachusetts Coalition (MCNP) Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing nurse practitioners who have made significant lifetime contributions to NP practice.

Dr. Cheryl L. Nimmo, Cl’14 has been the 2017 President of the Board of Directors of the

American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Dr. Jessica Ochs, Cl’16 is now Director of Master’s Nurse Practitioner Programs, School of

Nursing, Endicott College, Beverly, MA

Dr. Kathy Prairie, Cl’16 is the Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, part of the HealthQuest System in Poughkeepsie N.Y. & in June 2017 completed Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification by Pivotal Resources and HealthQuest.

Claire Seguin, Cl’18, was promoted this August to Associate Chief Quality Officer

throughout MGH/MGPO network.

Dr. Alexis Schmid Cl’17 in April 2017 completed “Humanitarian Response Intensive Course” at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, Cambridge, MA; in June 2017 was selected for “Health Emergencies in Large Populations Course” in Geneva, Switzerland by the International Committee of the Red Cross in partnership with the World Health Organization and the Geneva Center for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action.

Dr. Justin Dilibero, Cl’17 completed his term as our representative to the AACN Graduate Student Nursing Academy (GSNA) after 2 years in this role and transitioned this responsibility to newly nominated Jennifer Gormley, Cl’18.

Dr. Ethan Schuler, Cl’17 completed his 3 year term as DNP student representative to the DNP Advisory Board.

We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to both Dr. DiLibero and Dr. Schuler for their dedication and outstanding service to our DNP program, School and

nursing profession! Kudos to you both!!!!!!

As you know we also sent Alice Murphy Szcepaniak best wishes in March of 2017 as she moved on to a new position at Boston University in line with her new NU Master’s degree in Counseling conferred in May 2017.
