Performance Enhancements in Timescaled Logic DiagramThe Timescaled Logic Diagram now loads data faster after you launch it from P6 Professional and also draws diagrams quicker.Publication Services.Project and enterprise data Publication Services run in the background to ensure that as changes are made to your core P6 EPPM data, the impact of these changes is reflected in the new P6 Extended Schema, an extension of the EPPM database which includes new tables and views. A number of administrative settings exist to control the frequency and throughput of the new Publication Services, allowing the system to be fine tuned to meet the needs of your particular installation.

Real-Time Reporting. The result of Publication Services is near real-time reporting. There is no need to wait for the Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) process to populate the Operational Data Store (ODS) with recent changes before they are reflected in Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) Publisher reports. By default, BI Publisher reports use an extended EPPMDB as their data source. As changes are made, the corresponding reporting data source tables and views in EPPMDB are automatically updated to reflect the changes, allowing for near real-time access to changed data in reports. The P6 EPPM Extended Schema that support reporting directly from the P6 database and improved storage. BI Publisher 11g support and SQL server are supported and security is improved. When you install your database, you will create a new user, PX Reporting User, which will allow you to run reports in P6.

Improved Storage and Direct Access. All P6 EPPM data, including spreads and calculations, are stored in tables and views, ready for reporting. When running reports in the P6 web application, the P6 EPPM database, including the P6 Extended Schema, is the default primary source for report data. The Operational Data Store (ODS) and its associated Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) process of the P6 Reporting Database are supported, but are not required and are not installed by default. The P6 Reporting Database is a truly optional add-on component to the P6 EPPM suite, supporting P6 Analytics, third-party reporting tools, off-line analysis, and consolidation of P6 data into larger corporate data warehouses.

BI Publisher 11g Support. In addition to version 10g, P6 EPPM supports integration with BI Publisher 11g, which includes a number of report creation, content, and delivery enhancements. BI Publisher 11g includes a web-based, WYSIWYG report authoring tool that can be used to create high fidelity, pixel perfect reports. BI Publisher 11g also supports the creation of reports that combine data from more than one data source. For example, create a single report or form with data from P6 EPPM and additional data source providers such as SQL, MDX, XML, Web Services, or Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat report editor plug-ins are also supported.

SQL Server Support. In addition to Oracle databases, P6 EPPM supports reporting against SQL Server databases. However, the ODS database only supports Oracle installations.Improved Security Model. The P6 security model for reporting supports using the P6 Extended Schema as the source for report data. The security model includes the PxRptUser database user, which is added automatically when you install or upgrade to P6 Release 8.1.

Improved Selection of Projects and Resources for Reports. When specifying resources or projects as report parameters, you can now easily organize, search, and select from groups of related projects or resources. For example, you can select all projects assigned to a specific project code or all resources assigned to a specific resource code. In the Select Project dialog box in the report parameters table of the Reports section, P6 EPPM allows you to group, search, and select projects by EPS, portfolio, or project code. In the Select Resource dialog box, you can select resources by primary role, resource code, or resource team.

Improved Resource Assignments Detail Window on the Activities Page.To enhance usability of the Assignments detail window on the Activities page in P6, additional assignment date-related fields, previously only available from the Resources section, are now available in this view. To accommodate for the number of additional fields in this detail window, you can choose to customize columns one at a time, or open the Customize Columns dialog box to select multiple columns at once.

Resource Overallocation Service. The Resource Overallocation service enables you to run a report in P6 to identify where resource demand exceeds capacity. You select the time period for which you need resource data analyzed and then the Publish Projects service updates data on all projects open in your view before the Resource Overallocation service analyzes usage data for all resources assigned to the projects open in your view. The service also pulls resource allocation data from all additional projects to which the resources are assigned, but are not currently open in your view (shown as "Other Projects" in the report). The Notification button in the application footer opens messages from the service and links to Overallocation reports. The Overallocation report lists overallocated resources and the tasks for which they are assigned, grouped by project. You can make updates to this report, including reassigning resources, changing assignment dates, updating units, or updating the remaining time/units.

Improved Risk Categories in P6.The Risk Categories allows you to organize risk categories in a hierarchy. You can create child categories (subcategories) under a parent category enabling you to organize and group categories in a way that makes sense for risk analysis practices at your company.

Risk Threshold Enhancements.Cost impact by percentage and Schedule impact by percentage risk thresholds are available in P6 which complement the existing cost and schedule risk thresholds, renamed Cost impact by value and Schedule impact by value. Using the by percentage impact thresholds enables you to create one matrix that can be used across multiple projects where the absolute cost and schedule impacts vary. The cost impact threshold is defined as a percentage of the project's planned cost. The schedule impact threshold is defined as a percentage of the project's planned duration. Use the by value impact thresholds when creating a risk scoring matrix where absolute monetary and schedule values are known and common for all projects assigned to the matrix.

Risk Exposure Fields. When managing project risks using the register on the Risks page in P6, you can clearly see the dates a project is exposed to a risk and the monetary impact a risk has on the project using the risk exposure fields: Exposure Start, Exposure Finish, and Exposure (the monetary impact of the risk). Risk exposure is calculated from the values selected for the probability and cost impact of each risk. Risk exposure fields are available for individual risks and risk response plans. Use the Response Plans detail window on the Risks page to create a risk response plan to see how your mitigation actions reduce the monetary impact for the risk. Use the Project Risk Exposure field to view the total exposure for all risks identified in the project available on the EPS page, and in a scorecard, bubble chart, or histogram portfolio view portlet on the Dashboards page.

Risk Identification Fields.Identified By and Identified Date fields in P6 are available to track when a risk was identified and by whom. Knowing who identified a risk enables you to consult with the source, if necessary. The identified date is helpful in a variety of ways, including tracking the time between when the risk was identified and when it started being tracked.

Enhancements to Risk Views. In the risk register on the Risks page in P6 you can: View the new Exposure, Exposure Start, and Exposure Finish fields; Edit the Identified By and Identified Date fields; Group by all available fields (except Exposure); Cut and paste risks between projects in the risk register; Easily identify which risks have active response plans, with the Active Response Plan field; View additional activity-related fields on the Activities detail window. In the Risks detail window on the Activities page you can: View the Exposure, Exposure Start, and Exposure Finish fields; Edit the Identified By and Identify Date fields; Easily identify which risks have active risk response plans, with the Active Response Plan field. Web-Based EPS and Project Configuration and Creation.Configure the project hierarchy at your organization (the enterprise project structure, or EPS) and use it to structure projects and control user access to project and portfolio data in P6. Project managers can use the web-based EPS features to create and edit projects, templates, preferences, baselines, and summaries. Other useful features include configuring multi-user EPS views that target key data, importing and exporting Primavera XML, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Project 2007 data, and creating new projects and templates directly within the EPS hierarchy.

Web-Based EPS and Project Views.Project managers have access to robust, more useful project views at the EPS level in P6. You can configure the entire EPS and monitor the status of multiple projects, all from this single page. The EPS Gantt chart view on the web is also included. It shows a flat list or grouped list of projects on a timeline. You can choose to display multiple bars, such as current dates versus baseline dates for a comparison view. You can show the timescale in increments of years (for a long-range view), quarters, months, all the way down to days (for a more granular view.)

Enhanced Portfolio Filtering in P6.Automatic filter refreshing helps keep your portfolios in sync with the latest project data, without the need for user intervention. An expanded number of filter parameters are available, offering greater precision when configuring and comparing filtered portfolios.

Schedule Preview. When hundreds or thousands of activities appear in a Gantt chart, P6 EPPM allows you to add, modify, or delete them, immediately updating the results to maximize performance. There is no need to reschedule the project in order to view the impacts of your changes. You can preview the results before applying them with Schedule Preview, which instantly generates a preview of any schedule changes locally on your PC. This allows you to see the impact of adding, deleting, or modifying activities on the overall project schedule before deciding to save the schedule changes or discard them.

Recalculate Assignment Costs. The P6 web application provides an optional command for updating resource and role assignment cost data in your project to reflect recent changes to one or more rates. Use this command during or after scheduling a project in case changes to dates cause assignments to span periods with more than one rate in effect. This command can also be used during leveling.

Project Baselines. In addition to supporting the administration of baseline types, P6 EPPM web application also enables you to convert projects into baselines and then restore baselines back into projects.

Reusable Project Templates in P6.A template is a stored copy of, or blueprint for, a project. It includes all the details, best practices, and standards your organization associates with projects of a particular type. In addition, specific WBS branches and their activities can be inserted from templates into other templates or even into projects. Organize your template projects in the EPS, assign them project codes, and provide them with descriptions to aid in reuse. Because templates and projects share a common database and user interface, it is easy to create templates from projects or to create projects from templates. You can also create projects based on other projects, and templates based on other templates. The templates feature represents a significant feature improvement and replaces Methodology Management and the Project Architect. Before upgrading, consider converting existing methodologies to projects and then after upgrade convert them from projects to templates.

Risk Scoring Matrix, Categories, and Thresholds. You can define risk probability, tolerance, and impact thresholds using the new risk scoring matrix in P6. If you are assigned to a project, you can assess risks in order to calculate relative project risk scores. This feature includes a color-coded probability and impact diagram (PID), probability threshold scale, tolerance scale, and impact severity table. Enhanced support for risk categories enables you to manage, track, and analyze your own particular conventions for grouping and managing risk. Configure color-coded assessment levels to measure the probability, cost, and schedule impacts of each risk on the risk threshold page.

P6 Reporting Database Integrated with Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher.BI Publisher is an enterprise reporting solution allowing you to design, manage, and deliver formatted documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, OpenOffice and PDF format, using familiar columnar and graphical styles. Over 30 pre-defined reports can be dynamically generated when BI Publisher accesses P6 EPPM data in the Operational Data Store (ODS). Run pre-defined reports to get started quickly or create reports via data models or templates (also includes custom layout designer). Also provided are the ODS and the Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) process, providing secure access to data in an easy to use schema. The Project Reports and My Reports portlets have been replaced with the Reports section. If you still need to view P6 Optional Client reports in a P6 portlet, you can select the Store report in Work Products and Documents option in P6 Optional Client when creating report batches or printing reports.

Schedule reports or generate ad hoc reports on-demand in P6.Schedule reports to be generated at defined intervals; once, daily, weekly or monthly. You can define multiple schedule runs for any report, each with its own interval, delivery recipients, template and parameters. You can also generate reports instantly, on-demand.

Store archives and access report histories in P6.Previous runs of a report can be saved, providing a report archiving solution to allow for access to historical reports. Organizations can configure BI Publisher to save reports for a defined time period, and individuals can access the historical reports through BI Publisher.

Adjustable Report Parameters.Report parameters can be defined in a P6 report, and passed in at runtime. This reduces the effort and cost of creating and maintaining reports. You can use parameters to filter and organize the information on a report so that a single report can meet the need of several project managers, planners and stakeholders. P6 EPPM reports also include easy lists of values you can browse to select the values you need to run your report.

Secure Access To Report Data. The new reporting capabilities of P6 provide three layers of security to ensure data is protected and individuals only have access to the reports they are permitted to run. You can hide the entire reporting section using the Enterprise Reporting module access setting. Provisioning this module exposes the reporting section and creates database views in the ODS for each user. You can also define which reports each user has access to run via the hierarchical folder structure used for organizing the reports. If you run a report which pulls project information from the ODS, it will only return data for projects to which you have access, as determined by P6 application security settings.

Keyboard Shortcuts. The menus on the EPS, Activities, and Resource Assignments pages in P6 include new time-saving keyboard equivalents for important commands. The Enterprise Data pages in the administration section of the application also include keyboard equivalents for many of its popular commands (for example, press the Insert key to add a new item). Most pages and dialog boxes support Tab key traversal for easy access and navigation between fields.

Menus and Icons. The Activities, EPS, and Resource Assignments pages in P6 organize their feature-rich offering of commands within a series of standard menus titled Actions, Edit, and View. Throughout the entire suite, nearly 100 icons representing various commands have been redesigned and optimized for recognition and ease-of-use.

Redesigned Detail Windows. When a table of entries includes specific related information that supplements the data already shown on the page, P6 presents the detailed information in one or more detail windows. For added convenience, tabbed detail windows are minimized and restored collectively as a group. You do not need to open and close each detail window separately, although this level of individual customization is supported on the EPS and Activities pages. The application makes greater use of the consistent detail window design. Detail windows also appear when administering resources, user accounts, and security profiles. The EPS page includes eight detail windows with specific supporting information related to EPS elements and projects. The Activities page has an additional three detail windows for issues, risks, and general data. You can show or hide the detail windows on the Activities and EPS pages, two of the most widely used pages in the application, independantly of each other.

Work Day Definition.P6 EPPM provides a system-wide option to convert durations between hours, days, weeks, months, and years based on new calendar settings. In addition to the existing Admin Preference, each calendar has its own settings for the number of hours in a day, week, month, and year. There is also an option to determine if the conversion is based on the Admin Preference settings or each calendar’s settings. Provides more flexibility, consistency and control over viewing and communicating project time lines and duration of work in P6 Web Access and Project Management modules.

Grouping/Summary Duration Calculations.Summary and grouping band durations are calculated based on the corresponding activity- or project-level calendar. Durations that are displayed in grouping bands on layouts, views and reports are calculated based on how the view is grouped. If a view is grouped and all rows in the group use the same calendar, that calendar is used for calculating duration based on dates. If the rows do not all use the same calendar, but all belong to the same project, the project’s default calendar will be used, otherwise, the global default calendar is used to calculate durations based on dates. Project and resource level summary durations are also calculated according to their assigned calendars, that is their respective default project calendar or resource calendar. This provides more flexibility, consistency and control over viewing and communicating project time lines and duration of work in P6 Web Access.

Adding Code Values on the Fly.You can add new code values to the dictionary while assigning codes to activities in P6 Web Access, without having to navigate to the activity code dictionary. You are prompted to specify the activity code value and description. This improvement enables you to assign new codes to activities in a more efficient and productive manner, thereby reducing the time to create project plans.

Improved Feedback and Communication.P6 EPPM provides activity-level feedback capabilities so that the project managers and schedulers can collaborate with field personnel on an activity-by-activity basis. Project managers are notified in P6 Web Access or Project Management when notes have been added from the field in P6 Progress Reporter (formerly Timesheets) or Project Management, and then may easily view and respond to the notes. The field personnel then have access to the feedback. The feedback field is also time-stamped with non-editable history to maintain an accurate audit log. This feature allows real-time communication, with accurate history, minimizing delays in the execution of project work.

Events in P6.Event enablement is key for organizations wishing to automate business processes across one or multiple systems. P6 EPPM delivers events capabilities as part of the Web client, Integration API and Web Services. Organizanions may create automation within P6 and orchestrate processes across other systems in the enterprise. Oracle Administration and Security Support for P6 Web Access.P6 EPPM supports Oracle Identity and Access Management Suite. Oracle Identity Management (OIM) assists with centralized user provisioning across multiple, disparate systems, reducing the workload and cost associated with creating users in each system independently. Oracle Access Manager (OAM) centrally manages security and access to various systems through single-sign-on, providing one common logon for all applications and removing the need to enter the login credentials for each system. This reduction in login credentials creates a more secure environment. Oracle Identity Directory provides a central resource directory repository helping you support single logon and single sign-on, reducing the cost of application management.

More Effective Communication with Oracle Primavera Support.P6 EPPM Web Access integrates with Oracle Configuration Manager (OCM) to assist Oracle Support as they help organizations deploy and maintain their P6 investment. OCM is an automated method to collect valuable configuration information to help Oracle understand customer environments.

Activity Field-Level Security.P6 EPPM Web Access incorporates field-level security for project activities. You can assign edit privileges to only the activity fields that each user is required to update, while all others are read only. The activity-level security gives the flexibility to allow the updating of fields such as actual start and finish, percent completes and remaining effort, while limiting access to other activity-level fields to read only.

Excel Import Security in P6 Web Access. The security privilege for importing from Excel has been separated from the privilege for importing XER, MS Project and P3 file types. This security option allows you to import from Excel file types only, while also ensuring that global dictionary information is not modified when importing XER, MS Project and P3 file types.

Standardized Server Platform for Group Server. The timesheet Group Server has been moved to the Java platform, removing the requirement of being a Windows-based service on a Windows server. Common and independent platform support for the timesheet server.

Improved Scalability, Performance, Availability.P6 EPPM includes technologies to improve scalability, performance and availability for P6 Web Access. Support for WebLogic JRockit JVM improves performance and scalability. Also, improved support for WebLogic clustering has been added to increase availability and scalability of the P6 solution. The Java server platform has been moved to version 6 of Java, which provides better performance and scalability for P6.

Increased Standardization for P6 Web Services:WS-Security. WS-Security provides ways to secure your services above and beyond transport level protocols such as HTTPS. Through a number of standards such as XML Encryption, and headers defined in the WS-Security standard, it allows you to pass authentication tokens between services, Encrypt messages or parts of messages, Sign messages, and Timestamp messages. P6 Web Services supports passing authentication tokens using UsernameToken Profile and timestamping messages.

Increased Standardization for P6 Web Services:WS-Policy. The WS-Policy framework provides a general purpose model and syntax to describe the policies of a Web Service. For example, you may require transport-level security for protecting web service messages. This requirement can be defined by using a policy. P6 Web Services has the ability to enforce policy assertions via the underlying CXF services framework. The policy assertions are defined in a single file called policies.xml (see user guide for enabling WS-Policy). For the shipped version of P6 Web Services we officially support policy assertions for enforcing WS-Addressing and transport level security. When transport level security is enabled (by enabling the policy), P6 Web Services will only service requests that are invoked via an HTTPS connection.

Increased Standardization for P6 Web Services:WS-Addressing. WS-Addressing is a standardized way of including message routing data within SOAP headers. When WS-Addressing is enabled, P6 Web Services will only accept client requests that contain addressing information in the SOAP headers. One benefit of using WS-Addressing with P6 Web Services would be a case where asynchronous processing of messages is required. In this case, clients will send messages to P6 Web Services and can specify the endpoint where P6 Web Services will send the response. This endpoint can be the original endpoint that sent the request or a different endpoint.

Increased Platform Support for P6 Web Access.Firefox and Internet Explorer (IE) 8 are supported browser platforms in addition to existing IE 7 support. IE 6 support has been dropped. Oracle HTTP server is now a supported web server. Oracle Universal Content Management (UCM) is supported, in addition to existing Jackrabbit support for content management. Oracle Enterprise Linux replaces Red Hat Linux support. Oracle Express (Oracle XE) replaces Microsoft SQL Server Express for standalone desktop installations. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 has been added as a supported RDBMS. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is also supported, however SQL 2000 has been dropped. For full details, see the tested configurations document.

P6 Web Access integration with Oracle ERP and Fusion.A project privilege, Allow Integration with ERP Systems, and two project level fields are available to support integration with Oracle ERP and Fusion products. The project-level fields are: Integrated Project, which indicates if the project is integrated with an Oracle ERP or Fusion project; Last Apply Actuals Date, which displays the most recent timesheet actuals that were applied to the project and is used to determine if new, approved timesheet data exists when P6 data is sent to the ERP system. Both these project-level fields can be display in the Projects window, Tracking window, and project reports.

Branding changes.Timesheets becomes Progress Reporter. The Group Server, which hosted the Timesheets application, becomes Progress Reporter server.Licensing is replaced by module access. The Licensing tab in the Users dialog box has become the Module Access tab. Use this tab to grant access to any of the following modules of the product suite: Project Management, Progress Reporter (formerly Timesheets), Web Access Portfolios, Web Access Projects, Web Access Resources, Integration API, Web Services.

Progress Line. You can show a progress line on the Gantt chart in P6 Professional to communicate variances in project progress graphically. The progress line makes it easy to see, at a glance, which activities are ahead of schedule, on schedule or behind schedule. It can be displayed with activity current bars and display schedule variance. In addition, the progress line can be drawn on top of baseline bars, plotting the progress point of each activity on its baseline bar. The progress line shows where the progress should be relative to the data date.

This provides more flexibility, consistency and control over viewing and communicating project time lines and duration of work in P6 Project Management.

Adding Code Values on the Fly.You can add new code values to the dictionary while assigning codes to activities in P6 Project Management, without having to navigate to the activity code dictionary. You are prompted to specify the activity code value and description. This improvement enables you to assign new codes to activities in a more efficient and productive manner, thereby reducing the time to create project plans.

Copy Baseline.A copy option is available for creating a new baseline from an existing project baseline in P6 Project Management. This option reduces the steps required to create a new baseline from an existing one, thereby making it easier to maintain multiple baselines.

Remaining Late Units In The Activity Usage Histogram and Profile in P6 Project Management. The activity usage histogram has the ability to spread usage over the late dates in addition to the early dates. This late-date spread is shown as histogram bars and cumulative S-curves, and may be combined with baseline, budgeted, actual and early-date spreads. This feature improves resource analysis by modeling resource and cost utilization according to late dates.

Activity ID Renumbering.Renumbering options are available when pasting a set of activities in P6 Project Management, as well as for renumbering existing sets of activities. Options include incrementing existing numbers, auto-renumbering and replacing the prefix. This option provides greater usability and convenience when creating and modifying project plans.

Oracle Administration and Security Support for P6 Project Management.P6 EPPM supports Oracle Identity and Access Management Suite.

Excel Import Security in P6 Project Management. The security privilege for importing from Excel has been separated from the privilege for importing XER, MS Project and P3 file types. This security option allows you to import from Excel file types only, while also ensuring that global dictionary information is not modified when importing XER, MS Project and P3 file types.

Increased Platform Support for P6 Project ManagementOracle Express (Oracle XE) replaces Microsoft SQL Server Express for standalone desktop installations. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 has been added as a supported RDBMS. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is also supported, however SQL 2000 has been dropped. For full details, see the tested configurations document.

User count. You can use the Users dialog box in P6 Project Management to display the number of users assigned to access each P6 module. This is helpful in tracking how many licenses are assigned to P6 EPPM.
