The Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) is the national Guiding association for girls and young women of the Philippines. Its mission is "to help girls and young women realize the ideals of womanhood and prepare themselves for their responsibilities in the home, and to the nation, and the world community."[1] The girls-only association serves now a million members.[2]

Kid's Girl Scout troops were organized in the Philippines as early as 1918 by American missionaries and servicemen. These Scout troops were directly registered with the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Pilar Hidalgo-Lim and Josefa Llanes Escoda spearheaded the organization of a Scout movement for girls, and requested the assistance of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP). In 1939, Mrs. Escoda was sent to the United States and Britain for training through the help of Joseph E. Stevenot of the BSP. Upon her return to the Philippines, she immediately started to set up the GSP with the help of other civic organizations.

On May 26, 1940, the GSP was chartered under Philippine Commonwealth Act No. 542.

In 1946, the GSP was accepted as a tenderfoot member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) during the 11th World Conference held at Evian, France. In 1948, the GSP became a full member of WAGGGS during the 12th World Conference held at Cooperstown, New York.

Since 1995 the organization lost nearly half of its members; the membership number shrunk from 1,275,113 in 1995[3] to 671,267 in 2003.[2] In reaction to this, the BSP opened the Senior Scout Section for girls in summer 2006 which led to a public conflict about the focuses of both GSP and BSP.[4]

History of the Girl Scout MovementIt was started in 1906 by an Englishman and an army officer named Lord Robert Baden Powell. From that time on to the present, Scouting had a great impact on young people all over the world.

Aids to Scouting, an army manual prepared by B-P (as Baden Powell was fondly called) was the first guide for Scouting activities. This consisted of tests and games of character and intelligence, physical health and endurance.

B-P originally intended the manual to help his soldiers to have self-reliance, confidence and discretion through challenges and games in small groups. He called these groups PATROL.

Later, the Manual became "Scouting for Boys." It grew out of the personal, exciting experiences of B-P. It established the basic structure, the Promise and Law and the Patrol System.

To practice the theories in this manual, B-P held an experimental camp at the Brownsea Island, off the coast of Great Britain. This was from July 19 - August 8, 1907. This experiment was a success. In 1908, educators hailed BP's Scouting theories as a "revolution in education methods, a new way in character training."

      The rest is history.

Scouting spread widely and found its way to other lands.

What about the Girl Scouts? How did they come into the picture?

In 1909 at the memorable Crystal Palace rally of the Boy Scouts of England, a group of uniformed, self-styled Girl Scouts came out in the open and voiced their appeal to B-P to form a similar movement for girls.

B-P gave in to their clamor. He engaged his sister Agnes to help him put a movement for girls. Thus, in May, 1910, Agnes Baden-Powell became the first president of the Girl Guides.

Vision

"The Filipino girl and young woman who are progressive, dynamic, pro-active, patriotic and God-loving."

Some Girl Scout Tradition or Practices   1.SCOUT'S OWN is the way the Girl Scouts take time out to meditate about life and God with inspirational verses and songs. It is called Scout's Own because the Scouts compose/make it by their own selves. It is a solemn and spiritually uplifting activity. It is held anytime, in any quiet place.

2.GIRL SCOUT WEEK and Founder's Birthday is observed annually every September. Josefa Llanes Escoda's birthday which is on September 20, falls within this period. Founder's day is celebrated with Josefa Llanes Escoda Memento Ceremonies where troops contribute their share to the Escoda Memorial Fund.

The JLEM Fund is used to finance travel grants/ or provide pocket money for delegates going abroad.

3.MAY 20 is observed nationwide as the GSP Birth of Charter Anniversary date.

4.THINKING DAY is celebrated every February 22 by all members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. February 22 is the birthday of both Lord and Lady Baden Powell. The 4th International Conference in 1926 designated this day each year so members around the world think of one another in love and friendship. In 1932, it was called Thinking Day with a collection of voluntary contributions to translate thoughts into action. This Thinking Day Fund was instituted to support international activities, relief work, development projects, programs, etc.

5.SCOUTING MONTH (October) is a joint celebration with the Boy Scouts of the Philippines whose founding date falls in October.

Girl Scout Uniform Guide

As a flag is the symbol of a country, so is the uniform a symbol of an organization and its ideals. The Girl Scout uniform symbolizes the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

The Girl Scout movement and the member herself is judged by the way the uniform is worn and cared for. The uniform should be:

Page 11: biga-aes.weebly.combiga-aes.weebly.com/uploads/3/7/9/9/37992797/girl_scouts... · Web vie Scouting portal The Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) is the national Guiding association

well pressed, with seams and hems in order, with buttons and pins well polished,

cap in place,

scarf properly tied,

belt fastened in place,

socks neatly folded and

shoes well polished.

The green cap, troop number, pins, council strip, socks, belt and shoes are integral parts of the uniform. each one of these has its own significance.

The wearer should enhance the dignity of the uniform by being clean and well-groomed with neatly combed hair, clean and short nails, minimal make-up, and simple jewelry.

There is a uniform suitable for every occasion. The person-in-charge/event coordinator should announce in advance and specify the uniform required for a particular event.

All uniforms must be purchased from the national Equipment Service and its accredited outlets. Worn-out uniform should be discarded. IT IS BETTER NOT TO BE IN UNIFORM THAN TO WEAR ONE THAT DEGRADES THE WEARER AND THE ORGANIZATION.
