WHAT IS AN OPTICAL BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR?
An Optical Beam Smoke Detector is a device which monitors the amount of Infrared light transmitted from a light source to a photosensitive Receiver across an
open area to be protected. If obscuration of the Optical Beam path exceeds a set value due to smoke, the
Optical Beam sends a signal to the Fire Alarm Control Panel
If smoke obscures the light path from Transmitter (Tx) to Receiver (Rx)
above a preset level, an alarm condition is signalled to the Fire Alarm Control Panel

EXTRACT FROM STANDARDS
BS5839: “Transmitters, Receivers and any Reflectors should be
mounted on solid construction that will not be subject to movement, likely to affect the alignment of the optical beam, as a result of changes in temperature or imposed load”
UL: “Projected beam-type detectors and mirrors shall be
mounted on stable surfaces to prevent false or erratic operation due to movement.”
• Conduct a Fault test by fully covering the
Reflector, within two seconds, with non-
reflective material
TESTING A FIRERAY 5000 OPTICAL BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR
• Conduct a Smoke test by gradually covering the
Reflector, taking longer than two seconds, with
non-reflective material
To confirm successful
alignment

MAINTAINING AN OPTICAL BEAM SMOKE DETECTOR
To ensure the system continues to operate correctly:
• Check for visual damage regularly
• Check installation remains mechanically and electrically correct
• Check there have been no major changes to the environment such as line of sight, obstructions, reflections, strong light sources etc.
• Clean the system regularly
• Check operation of the system with regular Fault and Fire tests
