The Wyoming Blues & Jazz Society is searching for the best Blues musicians in Wyoming to represent us at the International Blues Challenge in 2014.

The 2014 International Blues Challenge, held in January in Memphis TN, will be the 30th year that Blues musicians from around the world compete for cash, prizes, and industry recognition. It is also the worlds largest gathering of recognized Blues acts from around the world.

As a member of the Blues Foundation, The Wyoming Blues & Jazz Society provides Wyoming blues musicians the only opportunity to visit Memphis and perform on a world stage.

This will be the 3rd time we have held such a competition, and it will be in the Parkway Hotel Ballrooms in Casper on Sunday July 14th.

We follow the IBC format and scoring system, full details on that can be found on www.blues.org -

click on the IBC Logo. It is strongly advised for anyone considering entering to research the International Blues Challenge thoroughly! Competing is a once in a lifetime opportunity and can change the course of your career. Any band is invited to compete providing the leader is a Wyoming resident, but all members of a solo or duo act must be Wyoming residents. Any entry must also be fully committed to attending the International Blues Challenge.

The WBJS will assist in fundraising and promotion, but is not responsible for bearing the cost of the trip to Memphis. See the website www.wyobluesandjazz.org for all the info and the entry form.

The Scoop on the Monthly Jams

The Jams

Our monthly jam is held the 3rd Sunday of every month, in All That Jazz, at the Parkway Plaza. Wedo an occasional one in the ballrooms so that younger musicians and music lovers can attend.In that case, we try to give everyone plenty of advance notice of the change in location

Everyone is welcome to attend and participate. There is no cover charge, but we do pass the hat to help defray our costs.

Host bands are paid $200, and a sandwich off the Cafe menu. Responsibilities include providing sound equipment and drum kit, getting set up in plenty of time to start at 4. Host band opens the session with one set, then opens the stage for musicians who have signed in at the door. If there are not enough musicians in attendance, a member of the host band will be expected to fill in as necessary. At the end, the host band is asked to come back up in full to close out with a couple of songs

There are "Jam Rules" on our website that all participants and especially the host band, should read, or ask for a copy at the Jam - these are not set in stone; just some guidelines to keep everything going in an orderly fashion and try to give equal time to all. We think it has been working out pretty well under these, but comments or suggestions are always welcome.If your band would like to host a Jam, please contact Jody Taylor, our Jam Coordinator at 234-4120. We love to get booked well in advance!

2013 IBC Report cont:

They have long been a staple in the Nashville blues/gospel scene, and have provided backing vocals Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and many others over the years.

Both nights we played our brand of WYO Mtn Blues the best we could, but we did not advance to the semi-finals. We knew we would be distinctive given our old timey acoustic blues music. Case in pointI was the only player carrying around a mandolin on Beale St. that entire week. We got a phone call early Saturday to play a third night at one of the biggest clubs based on word-of-mouth. The manager said: Youre that blues bluegrass group with the mandolin, right? We heard great things about you and we want you to play for us tonight. That felt good.

Finally, we were also invited to play at DittyTV1 of 30 acts invited from 21 countries. The DittyTV experience was amazing. A million dollar operation dedicated to filming and recording music for internet broadcast. Here is a link to our show. Yer Wyoming Mtn Blues in Memphis

What a trip: 1000+ musicians from over 30 countries crammed into 3 blocks of Beale Street, all with the same goalto play their brand of blues music the best they possibly can. JS Shanghaid were no different than any other band in that regard. We are proud and honored to have represented Wyoming in this Battle Royale of the Blues.

We played two nights at Alfreds on Beale Street. The first night we were the last of 12 acts, the second night, one of the first. Our band was tight and uniqueafter the first night a judge thanked us for being original. We held the crowd, won over some new fans, and made new friends. Taylor Scott and his friends were in the audience providing some most-welcomed WY support. Bob Moore from Laramie and Chris Shannon from Saratoga were also in our group, traveling out on their own dime to help with our logistics and transportation.

The 4 bands that advanced from our group all had three things in common: (1) tight music focused on tradition blues forms, (2) coordinated stage costumes, and (3) an interactive stage show in which the band jumped off/on the stage to play/sing in the middle of the audience. We held our own in category (1)our music was very tight. We did not follow these other bands in categories (2) and (3). We learned a lesson on how to look for a balance on style versus substance.

The eventual winning band was from Floridaa guitar/horn based roadhouse blues band with the charismatic front man Selwyn Birchwood. The Afrossippi Band with Erica Brown from Colorado took a well-deserved 3rd place. My favorite band in the finals was the clean blues sound of Howell Divine from San Francisco. The biggest surprise of the trip was to drift in to BB Kings on a Saturday afternoon to hear the McCrary sisters from Nashvillewow!

At this time we have 2 bands that are seriously considering entering the competition, and one solo/duo. Sure would like to have a few more. Stop thinking about it and enter!

Spotlight on Our Younger Musicians

The Natrona County High School Blues Combo Band: Leslee Christopherson, Reed Hilton, John May and Aaron Hanson

In following with our mission statement of believing that all ages should experience music, some of our very talented local high school students will be hosting the April 21st Jam. It will be held in the Natrona and Mardi Gras Ballrooms at the Parkway Plaza Hotel, for all ages to attend, participate and enjoy!

As always, the Jam is free to all who wish to attend. We will be holding some raffles, and the proceeds will all benefit our scholarship fund.

Leslee plays violin as a member of the Casper College Chamber Orchestra and the Wyoming Symphony. She also plays piano with the NCHS Big Band, Jazz Combo and the newly formed Blues Band. She has also been playing guitar with in the NCHS Guitar Ensemble with is the highest guitar class offered.

Reed is an accomplished percussionist and drummer who started in the Natrona County Jazz Band in 8th grade, and continued ever since. For two years he has found his place among the most prestigious percussionists at NCHS, the drum line.

John is probably the most well known of this group, having been performing around Casper for the last few years, opening solo recently for the Young Dubliners, and sitting in with many local bands and musicians. He has been inspired by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and more personally by local musician Jody Taylor and Stan Kirlin his music instructor. John will be releasing his 2nd cd later this year.

Aaron was the youngest bass player to join the Jazz Ensemble, when he was only a 6th grader. He finished Jr. High at Dean Morgan as the recipient of the Woody Herman Jazz Award for the 2009-10 school year. Entering NCHS he made history by being the first ever selected as first chair for bass AND drums. He currently holds first chair at NCHS in the Jazz Ensemble, and also belongs to the Jazz Combo as well as the Blues Combo. He has received numerous awards from Northwest College Jazz Festival in Powell, the Greeley Jazz Festival, as well as the Kinser Jazz Festival here in Casper. He is also a member of the Casper College Jazz Ensemble.

We are hoping for many of our younger musicians to attend this special jam, please encourage any of them that you know to come out. Of course all ages are welcome, musicians should bring their instruments, and sign in at the door. If you arent a musician, just come to enjoy some good music and maybe even dance a bit.

Our members support of the Blues Society through sponsorships, membership dues and attending shows, affords us the opportunity once a year to present a check to a Casper College music major.

The Scholarship goes back to 2001. It was named the Ray Patterson Memorial Scholarship in 2008 in honor of longtime member and friend to the Society. The donated amount varies from year to year. To date, we have presented over five thousand dollars to deserving students in the music department.

A major vision of the Wyoming Blues and Jazz Society will always be emphasis on music education.

Candye Kane to return May 17th

It has been 5 years since she has come to Casper, and this time Taylor Scotts new band will be opening for her. A pretty exciting combination, and it will be held in the Parkway Ballrooms.

Candye will be heading to Europe for another tour shortly after appearing here, her website is www.candykane.com. Laura Chavez will again be in her band on guitar. They always do an incredible show, so make sure you dont miss this one!

The Blues Foundation has undertaken a huge fundraising campaign to finance building a Blues Music Hall of Fame in Memphis. They will be providing suitable, permanent recognition for all gifts of $1000 or more. We raised over $1000 at this point to contribute, thanks to Mike Mammon for doing sketches of our most recent artists, and donating them to be raffled for this cause.

And to each and every one of you who purchased a raffle ticket! In years to come you may have the opportunity to Visit the hall and see the Wyoming Blues & Jazz Society listed there as having had a part in this Great project! Guitar Town 2012

Guitar Town is a weekend for those who love guitar music in all of its many forms. The main events are the performances but, there are also workshops and an art auction. Friday night is a warm up for the weekend. Last year it was kicked off by Jim Deeming who, later that night put on a fingerstyle workshop for those that were interested.

Saturday is acoustic day. All of the performances were acoustic sets. The lineup was: Scott Goldman, Richard Smith, Phil Keaggy, Doyle Dykes, John Jorgenson Quintet and Bruce Cockburn. Sunday is electric day and all sets were electric. The lineup was: Mark Selby Band, Joe Robinson, John Jorgenson Electric Band with guests Lee Roy Parnell & Phil Brown and the Eric Johnson Band.

The mainstay of the festival is John Jorgenson, who is a founding member of the Desert Rose Band, the Hellecasters, and six-year member of Elton John's band. In addition to being a formidable electric player, John is also one of the foremost practitioners of acoustic gypsy-jazz music, a la Django Reinhardt.

The music is a mixed bag, as it should be. This festival is about the many ways the guitar presents itself in music, both today and yesterday. I mentioned fingerstyle already but there was also a singer-songwriter set from Bruce Cockburn. Phil Keaggy blew my mind with what he did onstage with a looper and one guitar. Doyle Dykes did a great acoustic country set. Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed would have been proud. Mark Selby was a straight up blues-rock set. Joe Robinson, who could have played either electric or acoustic brought his band with him from Australia and tore it up like Jimi Hendrix. Wonder how good this kid will be when hes old enough to drink? Eric Johnson brought down the house with both his technical skills and his prowess as a composer.

Talking to other festival goers, I found out that John Jorgenson plays every year and brings with him an entourage of world-class players. And he jams with these people, too. You will see people together on this stage that you will not see anywhere else. Its very casual both for the players and the audience.

It is amazing to me that the festival is not swamped with folks from the big city and that the audience is not shoulder to shoulder in standing room only because this is a FREE festival. There is a crowd but, its not a huge one like I expected. There are on tickets to buy, just show up with a lawn chair and youre set!

The stage is set at the base of the mountain just below the main chair lift in the town square. The food and drink vendors are the same ones you would have if you were to take a ski holiday here and there are stage-side food vendors as well. There are lodge and condo accommodations for the booking but, book early because this is one hot weekend!

Your purchase helps the Society make a couple of bucks, but wearing those shirts when you attend other events is the big benefit! There are some non blues acts coming, like the Pimps of JoyTime, and the sensational March Fourth Marching Band. Lisa Haley and the Zydakats will provide us with some Zydeco music and BeauSoliel with Michael Avec will bring Grammy winning Cajun songs. Can't understand the Cajuns but it is really good stuff. Two Wyoming Bands will be on the big stages this year as I'm bringing back J. Shogren, and for the first time Jalan Crossland will appear at the SRMF. We are having three workshops this year, David Berntson's harmonica workshop, Doug MaCleod will be doing the same for guitar, and David Horwitz will do his photography workshop. In addition in the morning on the Morningstar Turf, we'll have professionally led Yoga sessions. There's more to come, but it's shaping up nicely says Carl Gustafson.

A Sad Announcement:

Tom Carlton, one of our local musicians and music lovers passed away suddenly, earlier this week. His brothers have asked me to let you all know that services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church here in Casper on Sat. April 20th, at 12 noon. Following the service a reception will be held at the Parkway Hotel (room to be announced)

All those who knew Tom are invited to attend, the reception should start about 1:00 PM.Let's remember Tom together, with some memories, music and food.
