Dobrogea is the region in the southeastern part of Romania, characterized by geologic and geographic complexity and a continental climate with Mediterranean elements. The northern part is an eroded Hercynian mountainous area of low altitude in present times, while the southern part is developed on a plateau. The region is bordered by the Danube in the West and the Black Sea in the East, where a range of seaside and spa resorts have developed. It is also home to the Danube Delta, a 2,200-square-mile wildlife reserve designated by UNESCO as a “Reservation of the Biosphere”. Delta’s waterways give travelers a glimpse of the abundant wildlife and the traditional fishing villages. Dobrogea area has been inhabited since ancient times and maintains an ethnic and cultural diversity in the present (Romanians, Turks, Tatars, Lipovans, Rroma, Greeks, and Bulgarians).
