 Matthew 22:34-4034 But when the Pharisees heard that He had 

silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37 Jesus said to him, " 'You shall

love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'  38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'  40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the 

Prophets."

Misconceptions About Loving God

1. Mistaking the Fear of the Lord for Love of Him 

Matthew 22:37“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and 

with all your mind”  

 2. Confusing our Need with Love

 Proverbs 8:17"I love those who love me, And those who 

seek me diligently will find me"

Psalm 97:10"You who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the 

wicked" 

3. Equating Serving God with Loving Him

 Luke 10:38-42 (New Living Translation)38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet

and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me." 41 And Jesus answered and said to

her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken 

away from her."  

4. Assuming Giving is always a Sign of Love

Luke 11:37-42 (New Living Translation)37 As Jesus was speaking, one of the 

Pharisees invited him home for a meal. So he went in and took his place at the table.* 38 His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first

performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom. 39 Then the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees are so 

careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and wickedness! 40 Fools! Didn’t

 God make the inside as well as the outside? 41 So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all 

over. 42 “What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb

 

gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. 

5. Thinking that Religious acts Equal Love for God

Psalm 51:15-1715 O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth 

shall show forth Your praise. 16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. 17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart--These, O 

God, You will not despise.  

Why don’t people love the Lord? 

John 14:1-31 "Let not your heart be troubled; you 

believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it 

were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and

prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I 

am, there you may be also. 

1. They don’t know Him

Matthew 7:21-2321 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied

in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' 23 "And then I will declare to 

them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' 

2. They’re afraid of the Lord’s Judgment

John 5:24-25"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who 

hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from 

death into life"

3. They’re Uncomfortable because their Sin doesn’t mix with His holiness

2 Corinthians 6:14-1714 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? 

Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall

 be My people."  17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, 

And I will receive you."  

4. They don’t want to Alter their Lifestyles

Romans 2:4-104 Or do you despise the riches of His 

goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in 

accordance with your hardness and your

impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who "will render to each one 

according to his deeds": 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in

doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness--indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first

and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to 

the Jew first and also to the Greek.

5. They feel uncertain about God and the Future because they have no Assurance

about what Awaits them after Death

Hebrews 9:27 (Unbeliever)"And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment"

 

John 3:16 (Believer) "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but 

have everlasting life"

Why should we Love God? 

John 13:33-3534 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you 

have love for one another." 

"The Lord created us"

"He’s given us His Son" 

"God has made Commitments to Us" 

Hebrews 13:5"The Lord will never leave nor forsake us" 

Philippians 4:19"He’ll supply all our needs" 

Matthew 7:7"He’ll answer our prayers"

1 John 1:9"He has forgiven us all our sins" 

 

Acts 2:38-3938 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the 

Holy Spirit. 

39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." 

John 14:2-3"Christ has prepared a place for us in heaven and will someday come back to 

take us there"  

1 Corinthians 15:52"The Lord will give us beautiful and 

perfect resurrected bodies" 

1. Desire to Obey and Serve Him 2. Delight in sharing Him with others3. Trust Him4. Crave Fellowship with Him 5. Desire to Worship and Give to Him

6. Want to defend Him and the Gospel7. Make time to study His Word8. Be willing to Suffer for Him
