Last month’s quiz answer... and winner!Quite a few of you were able to correctly identify last month’s local landmark as the bridge over Ashby Canal at Moira Furnace. The tranquil Ashby Canal is a 31-mile (50km) long canal running from Moira to the point at which it connects with the Coventry Canal in Warwickshire.

This month’s prize has been won by Glenis Belcher of Heather and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Ian Garside of Healing Hands. (See advert on page 14).

Lucky Paul Dickson of Thringstone, was soon to marry – but there was a problem.Far from cold feet, 45-year-old Paul was suffering from the embarrassment and inconvenience of profuse sweating and bright red face.Fortunately, he knew who to call for help and went straight to Herbal Healing Acupunture Clinic in Coalville.Doctor Ye’s reputation for excellent results in banishing all types of pain, as well as underlying problems, had reached Paul just in time via his fiancée, Yvonne. His marriage was only days away, on August 4, so he dialled the clinic and was seen the very next morning. He said: “I was very uncomfortable with my sweating episodes, which would start at any random time.”He added: “For example, I would be standing in a shop and suddenly would start. Sweat would be pouring from my face. I would go red as anything and feel so uncomfortable.”After consultation and first treatment, Paul’s sweating was under control. They looked at Paul’s underlying health regarding possible causes. The Clinic took into account Paul’s medical history. Five years ago he had been involved in an accident, which led to time off work and depression.

He was drinking and gained weight. He had also been put on anti-depressants, which he was still taking. Into the bargain, he has COPD and bad chest infections. “I’ve had pneumonia five times,” he admitted.Amazingly, the clinic also treated and got rid of his infection using acupuncture, herbal infusions and tablets.

He couldn’t be more pleased, as they have also treated his depression and lifted his mood, enabling him to half his dosage of anti-depressants.Paul is delighted. He says: “I am off the antibiotics too, thanks to Doctor Ye’s acupuncture. He is incredible and truly talented.“I’m a naturally cheerful person and am back to my usual self. They do wonderful work at the clinic in Belvoir Road and we are lucky to have them on our doorstep.”“They get down to the root of the problem and spend time talking to you and explaining the treatment that is right for you. The needles don’t hurt at all. “I have booked in for another batch of sessions as I’m getting such brilliant results.”Everyone deserves the best chance of feeling better, so if you are suffering, call the clinic on01530 810888.

Hospice Hope ‘Summer Poetry Competition’ inspires young poets

Hospice Hope are thrilled to be able to announce the winners from the Summer Poetry Competition for primary school children in North West Leicestershire.

The competition standard was very high, and the judges were all impressed by the range and depth of ideas. The theme of “hope” clearly inspired local children to explore words, rhythms and rhymes in a variety of new and creative ways.

The first prize, which is a Fire 8 HD kids edition, has been awarded to Dexter Mackie – aged 9 for his poem on climate change and hope. The judges were

impressed with his powerful message with head judge Ben Norris commenting: “a fierce and unapologetic poem that is at once damning us and inspiring us to do better”.

Runners up prizes are as follows:

Second prize, a family membership to Conkers, awarded to: Eleanor Nkiru Morse – aged 11

Third prize, a family ticket to the National Space Centre, awarded to: Amelia Miller – aged 7

As part of National Poetry Day celebrations, the top three poems were read out by actors at Century Theatre, Coalville on 3rd October and all shortlisted poems are on display at Coalville Library until 31st October.

Well done to all our entrants for entertaining our wonderful judges with such beautiful, thoughtful poetry. Thanks also to the panel of judges: Ben Norris, Victoria Barton, Susan Browne, Gregory Heath and Rad Gregory.

Think of the beautiful sea side

Would you feel sad if the fish diedBy time it is twenty fifty

They’ll be more rubbish than fish in the sea

Think of the United KingdomHow would you feel if there was none?

We put so much dirt in the airThe ice caps are melting, it’s so unfair

Think of the beautiful sea side

How would you feel if it survivedYou can help undo the damage

Recycle more or we will all vanish

Think of the tropical junglesWhat if there were no animals

Stop poaching it is cruel and meanCarry on these creatures won’t be seen

Stop think and save could change our lives

And then the earth we be revivedStart thinking wisely, it makes great senseWe don’t want our planet to be past tense.

From kitchen table to successful small business‘Sew Fabrics’ started life on the kitchen table of Gemma Hull. Working with her business partner, Suzanne Cook, the enterprise has gone from strength to strength. This successful fabric and haberdashery business is now on-line and also has a showroom base in Suite 1, at Ibstock Business Centre, on Ibstock High Street. Both Suzanne and Gemma previously worked with children and having children themselves found that they did not have much spare time to follow their own interests. They made a conscious decision that, as a bit of an ‘escape’ (to use their own words) they would pursue a pastime of their own and learn a new skill. As a consequence, they joined a local quilt making group and found this to be a satisfying and creative hobby. However, it wasn’t long before the ladies discovered that the element of this hobby they both really enjoyed most was the selecting and purchasing of the fabrics and accessories required.

With just a few carefully selected rolls of fabric and a small range of haberdashery, the idea developed into a small on-line business. It proved to be very popular with ‘crafters’ and from that point on Suzanne and Gemma established ‘Sew Fabrics’. Just over 2 years later the business has out-grown Gemma’s kitchen and the ladies now run their business from Ibstock Business Centre.

Their room is treat to the senses, as it not only looks beautiful, but is filled with lovely smell of crisp, fresh cotton! An absolute treat for anyone who delights in creating garments for themselves and their families or their own unique soft-furnishings.

Suzanne and Gemma warmly invite you to pop in to their shop or check out their stock on-line at www.sew-fabrics.com. They can also be contacted on [email protected] or telephone 07960 524 565. They are also on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram.

A fundraising campaign for Teenage Cancer Trust culminated in a tea party and concert.Sheila Lunn the organiser of the party said, “In March of this year my granddaughter was diagnosed with lymphoma and is now in remission after fantastic treatment in hospital funded by the Trust. I decided to raise as much money as I could for this wonderful charity. Over a hundred people attended the concert which raised £1200, plus £800 in sponsorship from taking part in the ‘Race for Life’ in Loughborough. I’ve been amazed at the generosity of family, friends and villagers, not only donating money, but helping with the tea party in providing food and help on the day”.

Sheila’s daughter Rachel also raised £1700 in sponsorship by taking part in ‘The Great North Run’ in September. Rachel said “I trained well for the run, but it was still a tough race with a time of 2hours 20mins, but well worth it”. Sheila added “So in total, we’ve raised £4000, after including a generous donation from ‘Go Ukulele Crazy’, who played at the concert. It’s been a great effort by everyone involved and provided something positive out of a very worrying period earlier in the year. Thanks once again to everyone involved”.

Listers Staff are ‘in the pink’!

The lovely staff at Listers Chemist, on Ibstock High Street, turned the shop pink last month to raise money for Breast Cancer research and awareness; with everything from wearing pink apparel to offering the chance to win a ‘Perfect Pink Pamper Hamper’. The event proved to be a great success with the funds raised looking set to exceed last year’s total.

STRUGGLING FOR STORAGE SPACE IN YOUR HOME?

Continued from last month...

Before going off to Mill Meece in Staffordshire for basic training I spent a week at Force Headquarters where I met three more recruits also being kitted out.

One in particular, who became my best mate, was from the North of Scotland. One problem for Jock was that he had never used a telephone before (they weren’t common in that part of the world in 1953). In view of this, whenever we had the chance, we found an empty office and kept ringing him on the internal phones. This paid off because after about 3 days he was able to answer our calls without breaking out into a cold sweat.

At that time a policeman’s training consisted of 13 weeks basic training, followed by a 2 year probationary period. Basic training at Mill Meece consisted mainly of basic law lectures, Court procedures, physical fitness and how to be a good ‘bobby’ in general. Our course consisted of both men and women from all the Midlands Forces, together with people who were joining forces in Rhodesia, Hong Kong and Singapore. At the end of the 13 weeks we took an exam which, surprise, surprise, everyone passed.

After basic training we were posted to different Divisions in the Country and it was my good fortune to be sent to

Coalville. My visit view of Coalville was on a damp, drizzly Friday morning, which was a busy market day. I vividly remember looking around and seeing what appeared to be coal dust in the air and everything was dark and dirty. Viewing the surroundings, I began to think to myself, “What on earth have I come to; a couple of weeks and I’m on my way.’’

I reported to the Police Station where, much to my surprise, I was given the weekend off and told to report to for duty at 8.00am on the following Monday.

My first day on duty will remain with me forever; I was to stay in the office so that I could learn the day to day routine. Just before 9am on that morning, a very pretty young lady walked through the office on her way to another part of the building. From very swift enquiries I learned that she was a C.I.D. typist and her name was Joyce. Later that day I decided to explore the rest of the building and found that I appeared to be completely lost. Fortunately, I found myself outside the C.I.D. office and the typist I had seen earlier that morning directed me back to the Enquiry Office. Also, as I was alone in a strange town, she agreed to meet me for a drink that evening. We celebrated our Golden Wedding in 2005.

15 players from SR Judo Club attended the BJC Leicester closed event returning with 18 trophies.

Several of the competitors were in their very first competition as they took to the mat. In the girls primary grades (U10s), debutants Bethany Patrick and Millie Shaw took a silver and bronze respectively in the U25kg category. Next up were Elsie Freakley and Lyla Painter in their first ever competition, fighting in the low grade U30kg category Lyla took a gold trophy and Elsie won the bronze. In the Open Grade U27kg, Eliza Seditas took a well deserved gold trophy. Bethany, Lyla and Eliza also stepped up to fight in the open grade U30kg weight event. Some fantastic Judo in this category resulted

in Eliza taking her second gold of the day, Lyla winning silver and Bethany taking home the bronze.

In the boys primary, Theo Painter battled well in the U20kg to take a silver trophy. Brothers Ricco and Fabian Crowie-McGrath were both in contention for the U25kg - a well fought out contest between the brothers eventually resulted with Fabian winning the gold and Ricco taking the bronze. Two newcomers to competitions took the mat for the U35kg - Alfie Freakley and Damien Makula. Both put in fantastic performances

to the silver and gold respectively.

Onto the juniors and Almirah Edwards took silver in the girls U36kg category against some experienced opposition. If you do get pain don’t ignore it! Visit a remedial massage therapist or physiotherapist. Most problems are easily solved with expert help.

Getting prompt assessment and effective treatment for back problems is key to a fast recovery.

Back pain can be debilitating and very scary, the good thing is that most episodes of back pain are resolved quickly. However, if the pain hasn’t settled within two weeks research suggests that assessment and treatment by a medical professional such as your GP, a remedial massage therapist or a physiotherapist is recommended.

If you visit a remedial massage therapist or a physiotherapist they will take a history of your problem including how it began and what makes it worse, then they will carry out a detailed examination in a comfortable treatment room and explain what is causing the pain and what can be done about it. To help you move forward they will put in place a plan for treatment to achieve a quick resolution of the problem. If needed they will recommend that you visit your GP to arrange investigations, like X-rays, or give advice on modifications to work situations if necessary.

Remedial massage therapists and physiotherapists are experts in assessing and treating joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves and may use joint mobilisations, manipulation, soft tissue massage, electrotherapy and exercises to decrease pain and improve function. They are also very experienced in problem solving and providing advice to stop the problem recurring.

That Pretty German Toy ; Musings on the Christmas Tree

Please join us for this seasonal lecture. The Christmas tree is arguably the icon of our midwinter celebrations, yet how much do we actually know about its origins? The talk delves as far back as the Book of Genesis to tell the story of this ‘German toy’, as Dickens described it. The talk is illustrated throughout with music.

The speaker Peter Medhurst is a musician and scholar, giving recitals and illustrated lectures on music and the arts. He studied singing and early keyboard instruments at the Royal College of Music and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He makes a welcome return visit to our Society.

Talks are held in the Dixie Grammar School Hall, Market Bosworth, CV13 0LE and start at 7.30pm. Guest fee of £5 payable.

For more information please contact: Sue Naylor (Press/Publicity Secretary) on 07947 038 534; Bridget Flavell on 01455 290300; or John Hawkes on 07590 496150.

The first lecture of 2020 will be on Monday 3rd February and is entitled: The Subtle Science and Exact Art of Colour in Garden Design.

Childhood vaccinationsThere’s been lots of information in the press and on social media recently about vaccinations. Much of it is misinformation or just wrong. Childhood vaccinations are generally very safe and help prevent your child and others from getting a range of very unpleasant diseases. They are some of the most tested medicines we use and are very effective in keeping people well. Over the years, smallpox has been eradicated worldwide by vaccination and polio has been eliminated in many countries. The UK had a measles free status until this year but has lost this as cases of measles are rising again in this country. One of the reasons for this is a reduction in the numbers of parents having their children vaccinated against measles with the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination. This is in part due to misinformation that MMR can make children ill. There is no evidence whatsoever for this. However, catching measles is very unpleasant for children and can lead to life changing consequences and even death in severe cases. If you or your child isn’t fully vaccinated against measles, we’ll be happy to give you the vaccine here at the surgery. Please call reception and they will discuss this with you and book you in.

MenACWY for university startersThis month we say goodbye to nurse Lynn who is retiring after Please don’t forget that we also offer the MenACWY vaccination against meningitis for young people aged up to 25 going to university. Please book with reception if you are eligible for this vaccination. If you’ve already started at university and haven’t had it please come and have it as soon as you can.

Inghams Farm Shop • ‘From Farm Gate to Festive Table’ With Christmas festivities and feasts on the horizon, now is the perfect time tostart to plan. A great local place to start is Gnarley Farm, a family run farm nestlingin Osbaston Hollow.

The Ingham family have been farming the 120 acres of farmland in the beautiful, local countryside since 1963.Now in the fourth generation of farmers, this farm was originally run by the father of Gavin, the current farmer. This carries on a family tradition, as Gavin's grandfather was also a farmer and following in their footsteps isGavin’s son, Sam, who now helps with the business, together with Gavin's wife Meg.

Old English breeds of beast, mainly British Whites and Herefords are bred on the farm and all the products intheir well-stocked farm shop are either home reared, from Gavin's brothers farm at near-by Barton-in-the-Beans or from other locals farms. Inghams farm shop opened 3 years ago, on the site of an old cattle shed. The carefully reclaimed bricks from the original shed being used to complete a sympathetic rebuild, retaining the authenticity of the farmyard. The shop is run by Meg and 21 year old son, Sam who is following in the footsteps of his father by learning the art of butchery. Gavin personally selects all animals and uses a mix of traditional and modern methods of butchery, to suit all tastes. A wide range of meat is available, including beef, pork and lamb. All meats can be butchered to individual requirements. Delicious ham and bacon (both cured on the premises) plus, sausages, pork pies, faggots, sausage rolls and fresh cottage pies are real favourites with regular customers. Orders are now being taken for turkeys and cockerels for your Christmas table, including 'traditional', crowns and bone & rolled. Free range chicken eggs and locally grown potatoes are also on sale. To make this amazing array of fresh, locally produced food even more appealing, FREE local home delivery, direct to your door, is available for all items!

In addition to all of the above, Meg bakes all the mouth-watering cakes sold in the farm shop and also offers a home-cooked, outside catering service for weddings, birthdays and funerals etc.

The shop opening times are Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.Call in and be amazed at the variety and quality of fresh produce on offer!

Why bother to have the flu vaccine each year? The influenza vaccine can have many benefits and prevents millions of illnesses. During 2016-2017, the flu vaccination prevented an estimated 5.3 million flu illnesses, 2.6 million flu-associated medical visits, and 85,000 influenza-associated hospitalisations.

However, flu strains vary each year and your levels of protective ‘antibodies’ (produced as a result of the vaccine) start to decline. Therefore, if you are at a greater risk, it is important to have the vaccine each year. If you fall into any one of the 5 categories listed below you are entitled to a flu vaccination FREE OF CHARGE.

You should have the flu vaccine if you:

• Are 65 years old or over

• Are pregnant

• Have certain medical conditions

• Are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility

• Receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill

Check with your local pharmacy to see if they provide this service. If you do not fall within these 5 categorises, the flu vaccination is often available for a small charge.

Local pharmacies offering this service include:

Brennans Pharmacy 31-33 High St, Ibstock LE67 6LG Telephone 01530 260265

Listers Chemist 123 High St, Ibstock LE67 6JQ Telephone: 01530 260994

COMMON MYTHS AND FACTS

Myth 1: Influenza is not serious, so I don’t need the vaccine.Fact: As many as 650,000 people a year can die of the flu. Even healthy people can get the flu, but especially people whose immune systems are vulnerable.

Myth 2: The flu vaccine can give me the flu.Fact: The injected flu vaccine contains an inactivated virus that cannot give you influenza.

Myth 3: I am pregnant, so shouldn’t get the flu vaccine.Fact: Pregnant women especially should get the flu vaccine, since their immune systems are weaker than usual. It is safe at any stage of pregnancy.

Do you break promises to yourself or neglect your self-care? Do you find it hard to put yourself first? Believe it or not self-love is your secret weapon to living a happy, fulfilling life.

Why do we find self-love difficult?Sometimes, we often struggle with feeling worthy enough and allow negativity and insecurities to create a cloud over us. This is because various moments of our lives shape who we are. Have you ever felt betrayed by a parent who wasn’t there for you? Did you ever had friends who treated you cruelly or had mean siblings? From our experiences we create narratives about our own self worth and how we fit into the world. We condition ourselves to feel unworthy and not good enough. I haven’t even touched upon social media or the media yet as unfortunately my word count for this article simply won’t stretch! These platforms (including adverts) subtly and sometimes blatantly tell us we aren’t good enough!

How can we love ourselves?Luckily, we can fix our perception of ourselves and get rid of the negative self-image. Simply, you have to be willing to love yourself! And you can forget about thinking this is selfish! When we love and put ourselves first, we are better equipped and in a better mental state to look after and care for others.

Here are a few tips:

1. Regardless of others - you are worthy! - Did your partner cheat? Did somebody wrong you? In both of these situations, the other person is the one with the problem. We’re so used to thinking poor action, by others, is a result of us and linked to our worth and value. Remember, most people act based on the thoughts and perceptions they hold. When you find yourself questioning your value; do a quick shake of the head and say “NO! I am worthy regardless of what anyone else thinks, says or feels”.

2. Fix the mental movie in your mind – We choose the thoughts and beliefs we pay attention to and create the narrative of our lives. We need to tame our emotions and have so much love for ourselves that we even love the negative parts.

3. Change your false beliefs – thoughts create beliefs which create action. It has been scientifically proven that the more we think something the more our brains physically strengthen the neural connection. Think positive things about yourself; even when you are experiencing negative emotions – be kind!

4. Write affirmations – you can rewire a false belief by using the power of affirmations; which are positive statements about yourself that you say to yourself daily either in your head or out loud; for example, I AM…(followed by something positive) a great mum, good at my job, clever, happy etc. The trick is to affirm what you want to believe (future) not necessarily what you believe now (present).

5. See the positives – grab yourself a little notebook and write three positive things or things that have made you smile that day before you go to bed and notice how good you begin to feel!

6. Do things just for you; things you enjoy; because you want to; because you can! – taking the time out for yourself may just be the thing you need. Doing it just for you because you want to is a great way to treat yourself and start the process of loving yourself. Especially if you always do things for others and have a busy life!

7. Focus on the vision and LOVE YOURSELF! – Learning to love yourself is tough at first but a truly gratifying journey. Commit to be willing to love yourself even through the tough times. Allow yourself to get up and try again; start afresh and keep following the steps listed above. They may seem too easy or too small but believe me; they will make a powerful difference!

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…

As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined, italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories

The Ruffle toy lay hidden in the grass underneath the slide in the park, having Fallen out of the little boy’s pocket. The sounds in the park slowly faded as it began to grow dark and turned cold. The grass soon became damp - Ruffle wished that the little boy would return to find him. All of a sudden a snuffling sound broke the silence as a hedgehog shuffled up to Ruffle. The hedgehog stopped briefly to have a sniff of Ruffle before carrying on, anxious to return to its cosy den, especially if the cold weather was to return.

Ruffle lay in the grass for a short while longer until he felt a larger wet nose sniffing him. It reminded him of Ruffle the Airedale’s nose on the first day he was given to Eric’s grandson, Jack. But this nose didn’t belong to a dog but to a fox! The Fox stayed a while sniffing all the interesting smells on Ruffle before continuing on his night time rounds.

Finally, morning arrived, and Ruffle heard voices not far from his grassy bed. Then a large white ball landed in the grass next to him Underneath the slide. A group of older children were on the park playing football. An older girl ran over to fetch the ball then suddenly spotted Ruffle in the grass. She bent down to examine the little soft toy.

‘Come on Jo!’ shouted one of the other children. ‘It’s your free kick.’

The girl picked Ruffle up and put him into her coat pocket, zipping it up to keep Ruffle safe. Once the game had finished, the girl walked home bouncing the football skilfully in front of her. When she arrived home she was immediately Greeted by a bouncing bundle of fur as her new puppy ran up to meet her. Bending down to fuss the puppy, the girl remembered the little toy in her pocket. She unzipped her pocket and took Ruffle out.

‘Here you go Spike! I found this new toy for you!’ She held the toy Ruffle out for the puppy who took the toy between his small teeth and ran over to his bed. But Spike was gentle with his toys and didn’t bite too hard into Ruffle but Instead enjoyed throwing him gently into the air then pouncing on Ruffle as he landed. It wasn’t long before Spike had worn himself out and settled down in his bed, Ruffle tucked in beside him.

Walk time should be very exciting for any dog but especially for a puppy just starting to explore the great outdoors that Lies beyond

their front door! Spike always tried to take a toy out for his walks but his young owner usually spotted the toy before the front door was opened. However, this time Spike managed to sneak Ruffle out with him and his owner didn’t notice a very pleased looking Spike trotting along on his lead with Ruffle between his teeth.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and so walks are the very opportunity to discover and investigate an array of odours. One particular scent was So wonderful that Spike needed his full attention and so let the toy Ruffle fall from his mouth onto the grass verge. Spike’s young owner decided that Spike should move along and called his name with the lure of a tasty treat. Forgetting Ruffle, Spike happily took the treat and continued along at his owner’s side, leaving Ruffle lying in the grass. Too late, the puppy realised that he had left his new toy behind…

Throughout that day Numerous dogs found Ruffle and carried him a little further along the road before they lost interest in the toy and dropped him. By the end of the day Ruffle was no longer on the same road that Spike usually walked along. Then an older couple out walking found Ruffle lying on the path and gently fixed him by his red collar to a fence so that he was safe from inquisitive dogs but could be easily seen by whoever had mislaid him.

Ruffle watched the couple walk away and waited for his Next adventure…

®

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 9 letters. The answer is on the inside back cover.

ASHBY AND COALVILLE LIONSSanta’s sleigh runs 2019It’s coming up to that magical time for children and theLions are busy preparing to bring lots of enjoyment to theyoungsters. As for many years, we have arranged to bringSanta to various locations in Coalville and Ashby in the runup to Christmas. (Santa’s magic reindeer only fly onChristmas Eve!)

This year there will be some new routes and some of the old routes have been altered slightly. It has become increasingly difficult to manoeuvre thesleigh around new estates with tight cul-de-sacs and a lot of parked cars, so with the children’s safety being paramount, we may not get the sleighright outside your door, but our members and helpers will knock to let you know the sleigh is nearby, so listen out for the Christmas music, watchfor the lights and have your boots ready by the door! The main aim of this project is for the children to enjoy talking to Santa and no payment isnecessary but we will, of course, have our collecting buckets and this is one of our main fund-raising events of the year. Every penny collected will gotowards helping those in need in the local community and further afield.

These are the planned routes and approximate times, and we will do all in our power to stick to them but bear in mind that this is a voluntary servicerun by helpers who give up their evenings throughout December, sometimes in terrible weather. Even Santa might struggle if the weather conditionsare severe!

Helen Burrows, Chris Simmons and Jonny Ward from Ibstock, Ellistown and Thringstone respectively, with friends Lucy, Phil and Matt from Grantham took part in the latest series of Channel 5’s Great Model Railway Challenge.

We were part of the ‘Muddle and Go Nowhere’ Team. Named after the nickname of the Midland and Great Northern Railway that ran from Norfolk, through Lincolnshire and into Leicestershire,

Shot and recorded in June at Sir William McAlpine’s country estate, Fawley Hill near Henley on Thames, fifteen teams competed against each other to be crowned the best railway modellers of 2019.

The participating teams were given 24 hours to build a model railway to a specified theme. The heats were split over three days; two ten hour days and one four hour day, after which the final judging followed. The final judging took place in front of an audience of friends and family.

The team were not surprised that they did not win the heat, as both other teams were

much more experienced and competent modellers. They were however surprised to be announced as the winners of the ‘wild card entry’ to the next stage of the challenge.

‘Blockbusters’ was the next theme to be tackled and our chosen blockbuster was the ‘Bond’ films. Another three days for blood (quite literally, I must be more careful with power tools), sweat and tears ensued, but not quite as stressful as the initial heat.

At this point I need to say thank you to Halls

of Ibstock who supplied some unwanted packaging that was turned into landscape and bridges. Another local supplier was Scale Model Scenery of Hugglescote, who supplied scenic parts for our layouts.

Only two of the three teams could go through and again we were up against professional grade modellers, not a bunch of shambling ‘muddlers’. Everything at the judging stage worked perfectly, however we couldn’t match the creative and technical builds of our competitors. The final judgement was inevitable, however, for six friends who had been hastily assembled as a team against considerably more experienced modellers, we thought we had done ‘ok’.

We thoroughly enjoyed the television experience and would recommend it to other would-be modellers, but be prepared for it not being quite what you see on television.

Both layouts are available to view at a new model shop in Grantham, ‘Rocket Railways’ or visit www.MGNR.uk for more information and behind the scene snaps.

As the First World War was ending the government wanted to commemorate those that gave their lives and acknowledge their sacrifice. It was decided that the next-of-kin would receive a memorial to their loved one. Not only would this be issued to the family of British Service personnel, but also to those from the out flung parts of the British Empire.A competition was held to design a memorial plaque. The winning design was of a bronze disc with a diameter of 4 ½ inches. It featured Britannia holding a laurel leaf and underneath was a box in which was transcribed the name. On the outer edge was engraved, ‘He died for freedom and honour’.Due to its similarity to a penny it became known as ‘the Death Penny’, ‘Dead Man’s Penny’ and the ‘Widow’s Penny’. Over 1,355,000 plaques were issued. The family would have received an envelope by post, marked ‘On His Majesty’s Service’ and stamped official paid. Inside would have been another envelope with a letter from King George V and the penny would have been protected by cardboard. The families were also issued with a scroll that would have been sent out separately. One family who should have received one of these plaques would have been the family of Thomas Percy Deacon of Ellistown. His family ran a bakery on Whitehill Road and Percy was a Master Baker. He enlisted in January 1917. Unfortunately, during a training session, he contracted a form of meningitis and died. The names of all the people who died as a result of WW1 can be found on the War Memorial that stands in Central Avenue. The next-

of-kin of all those should have received one of these memorial plaques. If anyone has one that belonged to a relative or a photograph, the Ibstock Historical Society would like to include it in their archive.

NOVEMBER; THE MONTH OF REMEMBRANCEUp and down the country, people will be gathering to remember the brave people who lost their lives fighting for their country. Although it is now over 100 years since the end of the First World War, their sacrifice is not forgotten.

A ‘stellar‘ night out atAshby’s Venture TheatreThe Community Voice wasintrigued to see just how theVenture Theatre drama groupwould tackle the logistics ofperforming this fascinating andunusual space-themed dramaby Alan Ayckbourn, so wentalong for a night at the theatre.

The play was a surprising experience for the audience and must havepresented an enormous challenge to the two main actors, the producerand the set design team. The action took place on a space station set onCallisto, a moon of Jupiter. Full marks to the set design and constructionteam for creating a very convincing platform for the play. We wereintroduced 17 year old Jem (David Knight), stuck on Callisto 5, all aloneapart from his emotionally unstable babysitting robot Damaris (NatalieWhittlesey), who believed that he was still only 8 and treated himaccordingly. This misunderstanding created the majority of the comedyin the play. David Knight tackled the demanding role of Jem with full vigourand alacrity and Natalie Whittlesey played the baby-sitting programmedrobot Damaris to perfection. The relationship between the two was welldefined and absorbing to watch. The measured and reassuring voice ofSian Mannion as IRIS the computer, was a constant presence, attemptingto keep the two main characters in check. The effect of this disembodiedvoice gave an added and interesting dimension to the play.

When Fred is literally 'sacked' for political reasons, young Georgegets his big chance to get out of the Gardening Basement in the localdepartment store. In this madcap northern comedy, we followGeorge through what could be loosely called his 'upbringing'. Life isfull of unexpected turns, with stuffed alligators and a parade ofdinosaurs, to say nothing of a successions of 'uncles' taking advantageof Dad's extended absences building dams and pipelines in thejungles of the world.

Mid October saw three Great Western engines in action on the old Ashby and Nuneaton railway. Two visiting tender engines, Wightwick Hall and Dinmore Manor joined the lines current loco 5542 for three days of busy steam action. The two large engines shared the main services from Shackerstone to Shenton, while 5542 worked the local trains to Market Bosworth. This is the first time since preservation that the railway has been able to pass trains along the line. A great deal of physical effort and many late nights of track laying was needed to accomplish this. There was a good turn out of both enthusiasts and general visitors to the weekend. The special event was topped off with the last train on Sunday being hauled by all three locomotives.

Wightwick Hall, built in 1948, was withdrawn from British Railways services in 1964 and sent to the scrap yard, a very short life for a steam locomotive. This is its first major venture out following a 42 year restoration at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre and the loco will be at Shackerstone for the popular Santa Specials and into January.
