Over a Cup of Joe.. by Jay Schoning Happy New Years in advance. The next time you read this column thingy it will be 2019. I don’t think we will have any big Y-219 computer crash or end-of-the-world disaster, but just in case…Happy New Years! My best New Years was that of 1999 when my good buddy Ben and I worked together to pull off the greatest prank in history. We were at this party at a buddy’s house – with most of us in the garage having a few sodys, at least sodys of some form mostly of which were hard. A few minutes before mid- night I synced up a wrist watch with the countdown on the TV. My buddy stood in a doorway into the mud room where the fuse box was, and I made sure where the big main switch was to pull which would cut all power to the house. Now I don’t know if you remember the hype, but the year 2000 was supposed to destroy all of our computers and technology sending us back to the stone ages. So the moment grew closer as I watched the seconds tick by on my wrist watch. It soon became apparent that I wouldn’t need it as I could hear everyone in the garage counting down 10, 9, 8 … 2, 1! I pulled the lever at the perfect timing and everything went black. The first thing I heard was “OH MY GOD, IT HIT Y2K HIT!!” I was only going to leave the power out for 10 seconds or so but the lever was stuck and I couldn’t get it back up for about 2 minutes, during which the whole time I heard my friends freaking out, then eventually they looked outside and started to wonder why our neighbors still had power! Haha – thinking back I really wish we would have recorded this; probably could have won $10,000 on America’s Funniest Videos. The best car safety device is a rear-view mirror with a cop in it. My buddies use to tell me “If you can still remember what you did on New Year’s Eve you didn’t drink enough.” Well, now days I can’t remem- ber what I did on New Year’s Eve ‘cause I am in bed by 9:00 and it’s not much different than September Eve or May Eve. I did think about buying a few fireworks this year and shooting them off – but I figured the neighbors would think I was crazy firing fireworks off in the driveway at 8:00 p.m. yelling “Happy New Year” when as the younger neighbors are just driving off to their New Year Eve party’s. I was going to quit all my bad habits for the New Year, but then I remembered that nobody likes a quitter. So, lets just celebrate together right now. Grab a brew, a champaign cup, a glass of wine, a glass of milk, or like me – a cup of Joe. 3, 2, 1 … HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions … Palo Alto County Sheriff Department Report On 12/18/2018 at 3:22 p.m., The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office re- ceived a report of a two vehicle property damage accident which occurred at the intersection of Rodman Avenue and 430th Street in the corporate lim- its of Rodman.
