Book ReviewsThe Maze Runner Ser ies- In this

dystopian series, Thomas finds himself

waking up in a moving box, unaware of

what is going on around him. He lost all

of his memories, but he is not the only

one. When the box comes to a halt and

is opened, he finds himself in a big,

grassy field, surrounded by many

teenage boys. They had all went

through the same thing. They have no

memory, but later on remember their

name. The field is surrounded by a

giant maze. The maze is full of

obstacles and robotic ?animals? that

come out at night to kill whoever is left

in it. Later on, Thomas, unlike others,

starts to regain many memories of

what had happened to them. He has to

use these to help everyone find their

way out of the maze without getting

trapped inside with the creatures at

night.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Ser ies-

This series is through the eyes of a

teenage girl named Belly. The book is

about Belly?s family staying at a

vacation house with a family friend.

Belly?s family consists of her mom

and brother named Laurel and

Steven. The family they stay with is

Susannah and her two boys, Conrad

and Jeremiah. Since Belly was young

she had always had a crush on

Conrad. Conrad is a hot, broody, and

total bad boy. Conrad has never really

noticed Belly in that way until this

particular summer when Belly gets

out of the car and stuns both the

boys. Belly didn?t expect this summer

to be different, but it was. The two

brothers start butting heads over

Belly and it causes a wild story.

Divergent Ser ies- This story is about

a dystopia that is surrounded by

walls. The society is made up of five

factions. The factions are Amity,

Candor, Dauntless, Abnegation, and

Erudite. At the age of 16, each

teenager is given a test that

determines which faction they will

choose to be a part of for the rest of

their lives. Each person falls into one

and only one category. However, if

you get an inconclusive result you

are Divergent, meaning you belong

to all five factions and can not be

controlled by the government. The

government is hunting for

Divergents so they can have full

control over the society. The

government has had a problem with

Divergents until a 16 year old girl

comes along and changes

everything.

The beginning of January marks not only a new month but also the start to a new year. It is an exciting month filled with new beginnings, cold weather, and we hope plenty of snow days! Much like when we start a new project or assignment, New Year?s Day begins the year with the best of intentions. We make a New Year?s Resolution! A resolution is a firm decision to do or not to do something and during this time of year we see many people hoping to improve their lives by

announcing their newfound commitment. However, even if we have great intentions it is very rare that people stick to their new goals in the long run. This is due to resolutions that are either too

lofty or unrealistic, having no plan, or even just giving up too easily. So, if you are hoping to break

out of the majority in 2019 and follow through with your resolution these tips are for you!

High School Gym Renovat ions Throughout the summer and into early fall, the high school gym underwent several

renovations for the 2018-2019 sport seasons. Because the gym was aging, some of the advancements added were new scoreboards, game clocks in the locker room as well as above the backboard, a new video board, a scorer 's table, and new seats for the teams. Our athletic director and high school boys basketball coach, Gavin Spitler, was a huge contributor to the renovations. He explained, "My role was contacting the companies and giving them ideas about the designs that we wanted to do." Mr. Spitler also mentioned that future renovations would be to re-paint the gym and re-do the gym floor. With the improvements to these facilit ies, we are able to have one of the best sports complexes in the area!

Along with some of the renovations, there are also new banners recognizing Newton's career scoring leaders. If you haven't already, be sure to come out and support the basketball teams this season and enjoy the nice facility that we have!

No matter what grade you?re in, you?ve probably gotten asked this question many times, ?So, what do you want to do with your life?? How many times do you hear the answer, ?I want to

help change someone?s life for the better.? This is exactly what Alyssa Rapp is planning to do. She?s always wanted something more in her life and decided what better way to do that than to move to Haiti for the summer after graduation and volunteer at an orphanage. I?ve been lucky enough to be friends with Alyssa since she came here in 6th grade and even then her love for

people has always shown through her life.

1,609 miles away is a small country called Haiti. It is home to 11 million people and is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over 400,000 children are without parents and left alone. They

work long days, do not get the opportunity to go to school, and hardly ever receive a warm meal. Over half of the population is malnourished and does not have a home to go to at the

end of the day. It is a lifestyle many of us can hardly imagine. However, without a second thought, so many of the staff here at Newton have helped the people in Haiti.

To help Alyssa get to Haiti she started a fund-raiser in mid-November. She?s been selling homemade cookies to people in the area to help fund her trip. In just two short months, she

has almost raised half the money to get her there. It is unbelievable how caring and loving our staff is here at Newton. Without much thought, they?ve all been ordering cookies and giving extra donations to help her fulfill her dreams. However, not only are they helping Alyssa, but

millions of young kids in Haiti. If you are interested in helping too, make an order with Alyssa!-The Trendsetter
