OUR STORY

Small Beginnings 1980s, 1990s

In the 1980s a small group of parents were casting around trying to find a better way of supporting their children with Cerebral Palsy and physical disabilities.

They heard about

THE PETŐ INSTITUTE in Hungary, founded by

DR.ANDRÁS Pető

Conductive Education He believed in a holistic approach to education: the development of the whole child socially and emotionally, along with movement, speech, mental ability, communication, self-care and cognitive

skills.

After visiting the Pető Institute in Budapest with their children over the next few years, the parents realised the great benefits in Conductive Education and the lack of anything similar in north Sheffield.

Paces Sheffield was

formed as an association

of Parents

Hi, I’m Marlow!

It was that sense of

empowerment given to children, of motivation and purpose that drew

us to Conductive Education.

The plan to open a permanent centre in Sheffield had begun!

It was the first time I felt

confident leaving my daughter somewhere. I knew that even

though she had so many physical complexities they would know

what to do.

So in 1992…

Summer Camps

…From 1992 Paces held annual

Summer Camps for 100 pupils and their families, in association with SCOPE and with 50 Conductors

from the Pető András Institute…

…Then we heard about an old derelict

secondary school about to be bulldozed…

…After a MAMMOTH amount of

fundraising and with the Pető András Institute and SCOPE, Paces opened a small school in

1995 in Norton, offering Conductive Education…

Our Ethos We aim

self image, and positive attitudes towards

learning, giving them a sense of

achievement

…to ensure that all pupils make progress in line

with their developing abilities

…to achieve the highest possible

standards in both teaching and learning

…to encourage all pupils to be motivated and independent

Parents as Partners

We need parents to be involved in school life to achieve the best for their child. We offer

specialised information and advice to support them and reinforce their child’s learning.
