Nonspecific vs. Specific WS

Nonspecific external defense mechanisms—these keep pathogens from entering the body without pathogen recognition.

Both: Nonspecific external defense (first defense)—keeps pathogens outSkin: block pathogen entry, suppresses microbe growth. Mucus: traps pathogens


Nonspecific internal defense mechanisms (phagocytic cells, inflammation)—these kill pathogens after they have been able to enter the body.

WBCs indicate that there is a serious infection because WBCs are phagocytic cells, which are part of nonspecific and specific immunity. WBCs are involved in inflammation and cell-mediated immunity. WBCs engulf pathogens.

Cell-mediated response involves the T cells (helper and cytotoxic) and macrophages.

Antibody-mediated response (humoral response) involves the B cells (plasma and memory) and antibodies and can involve helper T cells.


The clump (antigen and antibody interaction) attracts phagocytes (WBCs) and the WBCs engulf the clump and destroy it.

5.1.3: Isolating Bacteria


Aseptic technique is a method of preventing the transmission of infectious agents to/from specimens; working in sterile (no infectious agents) conditions.


New sterile plastic inoculating loops must be used to transfer bacterial cultures. Metal inoculating loops can be sterilized (using fire) in between cultures.



Caps of test tubes or tops of Petri dishes must be held during the entire procedure and never placed on the table or contamination will result.
