The Mass Media• During this time, the media grew by huge

numbers– Newspaper circulation rose by 42%

• Big paper companies like The New York Times grow whereas the smaller companies shrink

• Newspaper industries interested in profit: so what type of stories do you think they would most likely print?

– Radios owned grew by 16,983%• 1896: Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi invented

the radio• 1920: Frank Conrad sets up a radio transmitter in

his garage and transmits sports scores and recorded music

– Radio companies like NBC get their start in this era

• Number of theatres in the U.S. grow from 5,000 to 22,500– Movies attended per week grew by 100%
