9.1 Overview of Muscle Tissue
• Nearly half of body’s mass
• Can transform chemical energy (ATP) into mechanical energy
• To investigate muscle, we look at:
– Types of muscle tissue
– Characteristics of muscle tissue
– Muscle functions
9.1 Muscle Tissue
• Skeletal muscle
• attaches to bone, skin or fascia
• striated with light & dark bands visible with scope
• multinucleated
• voluntary control of contraction & relaxation
9.1 Muscle Tissue
• Cardiac muscle
• striated in appearance
• Intercalated disks
• involuntary control
• autorhythmic because of built in pacemaker
9.1 Muscle Tissue
• Smooth muscle
• attached to hair follicles in skin
• in walls of hollow organs -- blood vessels & GI
• Non-striated in appearance
• involuntary

9.1 Characteristics of Muscle Tissue
• All muscles share four main characteristics:
– Excitability (responsiveness): ability to receive and respond to
stimuli
– Contractility: ability to shorten forcibly when stimulated
– Extensibility: ability to be stretched
– Elasticity: ability to recoil to resting length
9.1 Muscle Functions
• Four important functions
1. Produce movement: responsible for all locomotion and
manipulation
• Example: walking, digesting, pumping blood, regulating organ volume via
spinchters
2. Maintain posture and body position
3. Stabilize joints
4. Generate heat as they contract
• Additional functions
• Protect organs, form valves, control pupil size, cause “goosebumps”
