Do Now: Happy New Years!2014 is a BIG year for you all: Graduating high school and starting college! Make a New Year’s Resolution involving your academic habits that you will stick to throughout the end of your time here at KDCA and that you will take with you to college. Some examples might include:
• Study _____ hours before each exam.• Keep all notes organized and accessible.• Stay awake and pay attention in class.• Raise my hand _______ times per class.
Think of something YOU need to work on.
• Get a notebook!• Check out our STATS website!• Laminated exit tickets FINALLY!

STAT Midterm
Law of Large Numbers
Unit 4: Probability
Objective• SWBAT understand the law of large
numbers in probability.
• Essential Understanding: Statistics can be used to perpetuate stereotypes.
• Standard for Mathematical Practice: Model with mathematics.
STAT: 18% of African Americans graduate college.
STAT: 8% of low-income students graduate college.
STAT: 1 out of 3 black males will be incarcerated in their lifetime.
This means that an African American male is more likely to go to prison
than graduate college.
If these are the statistics, how can KIPP promise “to and through college”?
KIPP founders took statistics class and understand the rules of probability!
Rule of Probability
Law of Large Numbers: As the number of trials increases, the actual probability of an event will approach the expected probability.
CFU: Why was it incorrect for me to make those statements about our classroom using those statistics?
Guided Practice: Coin Toss• What is the probability of getting heads when you toss a coin?• If you flip a coin 4 times, what PERCENT of the flips SHOULD
land on heads?• Flip your coin 4 times. What PERCENT of your flips landed on
heads?• If you flip a coin 10 times, what PERCENT of the flips SHOULD
land on heads? • Flip your coin 10 times. What PERCENT of your flips landed on
heads?• If you flip a coin 20 times, what PERCENT of the flips SHOULD
land on heads?• Flip your coin 20 times. What PERCENT of your flips landed on
heads?• What do you notice about the EXPECTED probability of heads
and the ACTUAL number of heads as you INCREASE the number of times you flip the coin. What rule explains this pattern?
• What would you expect to happen if you flipped the coin 100 times?
Exit Ticket• Write down a statistic that describes you. (It
can be one you heard today in class or one you have heard outside of class).
• Use the Law of Large Numbers to explain why your future is not determined by probability.
• Explain how this statistic COULD perpetuate a stereotype if someone did not understand the Law of Large Numbers.
• What was our Standard for Mathematical Practice today?
