Do now:
Finish your jigsaw of NZ volcanoes – especially the trends of where the volcanoes are located
Today we are learning to:
1) Explain why NZ has earthquakes and volcanoes
2) Draw the main fault lines in NZ and explain why NZ has volcanoes in the North Island and mountains in the South Island

NZ is on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” - an area of earthquakes and volcanoes on the edge of the
Pacific Plate around the Pacific Ocean.
NZ sits on the boundary between two major tectonic plates.
Indo-Australian Plate
Pacific Plate
How fast do the plates move?
Pacific Plate
Australian –Indian Plate
Central Volcanic Plateau
Kermadac / Hikurangi
Trench
Alpine Fault
What trends or patterns do you notice in the map?
1.Most NZ volcanoes are in the North Island, near Lake Taupo (this area is called the Central Volcanic Plateau)
2.The volcanoes are located close to the main fault lines
3.There are fewer volcanoes in the South Island – why?
Paper challenge
1.Use two sheets of A4 paper and a pair of scissors to create a model of the Pacific plate meeting the Australian plate along the length of NZ
2.Remember:
Subduction in the North
Fold mountain in the South
3. Add labels, pictures and illustrations to your model
