If you care about

Sunday, January 31, 3:00 pm

As credible a study as we could find

on the critical topic of Islam

...beginning Sunday, January 10,

in the Adult Sunday School class.

(see page three)

Page 2: DO NOT PRINT - ASTAtrinityelca.com/pdf/1601.pdf · That’s not an easy question to answer. On the other hand, there are all kinds of versions of Christianity, ... The study takes

A few years ago, one of the Cleveland television stations

prompted its weather team’s intention as “to prepare you,

not to scare you.” But, I have to tell you that the state of

much of the Church of Jesus Christ here in America is, for

me, at the very least, unsettling. I can say, “Hey! Five years

and I’m retired. What, me worry?” But, after sixteen years,

you know me better than that. And, besides, I’ll be no less a

part of the Church when I hang up my stole.

I won’t get this verbatim, but one of my seminary professors

once said that our ultimate future rests in Christ Jesus; how

we get there is up to us.

The options are threefold: the ostrich - total denial as we

bury our heads in the sand; the hen - we gather together

whom we can and hang on for dear life; or the eagle - we

trust the breeze of the Spirit to help carry us to new and

different vistas and ventures for the sake of the Kingdom.

I cannot ask you more sincerely to be in attendance on

Sunday, January 31, as the board of Sandusky Area

Lutherans in Mission (SALM) presents the film When God

Left the Building. We have meticulously selected the date so

as not to collide with football; the NFL conference

championships are the weekend before and Super Bowl 50 is

the following weekend. And, the SALM board has paid the

producers to be a licensed presenter of this documentary.

The fate of the Church of Jesus Christ does not hang in the

balance. Jesus Himself has promised the Church will

prevail. What is at stake is the status of our witness, not

only as Trinity Congregation, not only as the congregations

of SALM, but as the Church at large in the greater

Sandusky area.

One of the presenters in the film says we do the best job of

church as we know it and still face decline and disinterest.

Back in the 1990’s, General Motors tried to convince us the

car it was making was “not your father’s Oldsmobile.”

Buyers weren’t convinced. The last Olds rolled off the

assembly line more than a decade ago. In many ways, first-

century Christians would be better suited for twenty-first

century mission than we are.

But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Even old pastors like me

can learn new ways to reach out to folk who don’t know

Jesus or need a fresh introduction. And, there are a lot of

’em to be reached...for Christ’s sake (literally).

Sunday, January 31...3:00 pm...St. Paul, Mills at Perkins,

Sandusky...discussion and a light meal will follow. Please

come.

What Do Muslims Believe?

That’s not an easy question to answer. On the other hand,

there are all kinds of versions of Christianity, also. Who

speaks for all Muslims? Who speaks for all Christians?

But, the problem of diversity within Islam does not excuse us

from learning what we can about a faith confessed by 23% of

the world’s population.

And so, Sunday, January 10, our adult Sunday School class,

which meets at 9:15 am, in the Fellowship Hall on the lower

level, will begin a study of Islam as it compares to the tenets

of Christianity.

We will use a study entitled Christianity and Islam: So Much in Common, So Far Apart, a study that has been

used widely among mainline Christian congregations. From the website of Kerr Resources, “Christianity

and Islam is a unique study for a unique time. Each session of this 13-week study covers a major area of the

world's two largest religions, comparing and contrasting them in a way that brings greater understanding

of each. Written for Christians that have little knowledge of Islam other than what they have seen in the

news, it aims at providing a general understanding of the differences and similarities between these two

great religions. The study takes neither a "how-to-convert-Muslims" nor a "we're-all-the-same" approach. It

provides students with a greater appreciation of both Jesus and Muhammad, both the New Testament and

the Quran, and both Christianity and Islam and it faces, frankly, both our similarities and our

differences.”

We have purchased the participant reader and leader’s guide on CD-ROM, and we can make as many

copies as we need. Everyone is invited, and, certainly, guests are welcome.

Pastor Gardner will host a preliminary conversation on Sunday, January 3, but he is looking for someone

willing to lead the class, beginning January 10. If you have interest, please contact him.

Early Easter Means an Early Lent;

Midweek Meal Planning Underway

Ash Wednesday arrives on February 10, and with it, the Season of Lent.

Our Congregational Life Team will be asking committees or anyone who

would like to sign up to prepare a Wednesday Lenten meal to please do so.

The sign up sheet will be put up the first week of January in order to give

committees the chance to meet and decide on a date. The Congregational

Life Team will serve both meals on Ash Wednesday, and that leaves five

meals on following Wednesdays, as well as Maundy Thursday to be filled.

Last year, Congregational Life found itself filling in on dates that had not been taken. This year, if no one

signs up for a particular date, there will not be a meal on that night. Your help is needed to keep

the tradition of Wednesday evening Lenten meals alive. Thanks!

An open letter to the Muslim American community Dec. 11, 2015 Dear Muslim Sisters and Brothers, Grace and peace to you. I am writing on behalf of many Christians in this country who wish to share a word of solidarity, love and hope with you in these difficult days. In this season of Advent, we, your Christian neighbors, are preparing to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who commanded that “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart …[and] you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31, NRSV). In our love for you, our Muslim neighbors, we are distressed by the ways in which you are being forced to bear the fears held by many in our nation. Therefore, we renew our commitment to find even more effective ways to protect and defend you from words and actions that assault your safety and wellbeing. We believe God calls us to resist what is divisive, discriminatory, xenophobic, racist or violent, and we want you to look to us as allies and friends. The global refugee and migrant crisis and the acts of terror committed in this country and around the world are challenges that demand our collective efforts and our common prayers. Therefore, we will seek to stand shoulder to shoulder with you as agents of peace, justice, understanding, welcome and reconciliation for the sake of the world that God so loves. In this holy season, when we anticipate the light that the darkness cannot overcome (John 1:5, NRSV), we are reminded of God’s gift of life abundant for all. Together with you, we are committed to building a stronger society based on the dignity of each human being, the value of diversity, the holiness of creation and the common good. We pledge our partnership and invite our local communities into continued dialogue and engagement to this end.

In peace,

CHRISTMAS DINNER CHALLENGE: TAKE TWO

The good folks of our Congregational Life Team had some fun in store for those who attended Trinity’s Christmas Dinner last month. They passed out a paragraph in which there were supposed to be the names of thirty books of the Bible. There was just one problem. The version they found on line was missing a sentence or two, and so the paragraph handed out had only twenty-eight books. The paragraph below is complete, and, indeed, the intrepid puzzle worker will find the names of thirty books of the Bible in the paragraph. Enjoy! There are 30 books of the Bible in this paragraph. Can you find them? This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He enjoyed it so much, he passed it on to some friends...One friend from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his john boat. Another friend studied it while playing his banjo, Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot. That's a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalized. Truthfully, from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or a scholar to see some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph. During a recent fund raising event, which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phi lemonade booth set a new record. The local paper, The Chronicle, surveyed over 200 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, "The books are all right here in plain view hidden from sight." Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One revelation that may help is that books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without their numbers. Also, keep in mind, that punctuation and spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete really well against those who claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mad exodus, there really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph waiting to be found. God Bless.
