Web 2.0, Health 2.0
- and what they might mean for PHRs
Peter J. Murray
What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0, refers to a supposed secondgeneration of Internet-based services
emphasizing
on-line collaboration AND
sharing among users
Ref: An introduction to Web 2.0 (The user's voice in the second generation of the WWW) – Francisco Llaneras Estrada (Nov. 2006)

What is Web 2.0?
• Improved communication & collaboration between people via social-networking technologies
• Improved communication between separate software applications (“mash-ups”) via open Web standards for describing and accessing data, and
• Improved Web interfaces mimicking real-time responsiveness of desktop applications within a browser window.
Ref: Social technologies (aka Web 2.0) for ehealth-Gunther Eysenbach (after Barreto) (March 2008), www.webcitation.org/5W9GcYyWN
… or we can view Web 2.0 as ...
web-applications that get more useful the more
people use them ...
- and apply this to health
(Chris Paton – personal email discussion)

Web 2.0 claims:
Applications will provide benefit to the international health, biomedical and nursing informatics communities
- will allow users to interact with a dynamic, multimedia, and engaging Web platform
- will foster interaction, communities, etc.
- will change the way we work
- will change healthcare, medicine, nursing, informatics
Web 2.0 claims:
But ....... are any of these true? do we have any evidence?
How much do health and/or informatics professionals actually use them?
Plenty of consumers of content – not so many producers or much real interaction
The 1% rule - if you get a group of 100 people online then one will create content, 10 will "interact" with it (commenting or offering improvements) and the other 89 will just view it.
What is Health 2.0?
Shreeve:
Health 2.0 is “all about Patient Empowered (not the misnomer 'Consumer Directed') Healthcare- whereby patients have the information they need to be able to make rational healthcare decisions”, - and interoperability of health information will be a crucial determinant of success or failure of the movement.
O'Grady:
...the most important aspect of using Web 2.0 in health care is the use of social software, which will promote collaboration between patients, their caregivers, and health professionals.
Health (or Medicine) 2.0 applications, services and
tools are Web-based services for health care consumers,
caregivers, patients, health professionals, and biomedical
researchers, that use Web 2.0 technologies as well as
semantic web and virtual reality tools, to enable and
facilitate specifically social networking, participation,
apomediation, collaboration, and openness within and
between these user groups.

How is Health 2.0 changing things?
How is Health 2.0 changing things?
Views from an opportunistic email discussion
1. what will be the main changes to, or implications for, healthcare as a result of Web 2.0 in the next 5-10 years?
2. what will be the main implications of these changes for the ways in which health professionals work?
(discussion was mainly about medics – but ? same issues apply for nurses – what do they imply for informatics?)
Healthcare will be more person-centred, and more personalised
Rise of e-patients will drive change – not the technology etc.
E-patients' use of everyday technology (smartphones etc) will demand their use on healthcare
mHealth will be the main channel of interaction
We'll stop thinking of healthcare delivery over the web as divisible from healthcare delivery overall.
Patients are the only node connecting all aspects of the system.
As a result, human-to-human, participatory healthcare will be the 'name of the game' for Health 2.0 and beyond.
