You will have to do nine assignments in all. All the assignments are tutor marked. Each Tutor Marked Assignment carries 100 marks. Out of the nine assignments, three are Tutor Marked Practical Assignments (TPA) and six are Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA). The Block-wise distribution of assignments for each course (1,2 and 3) is as follows:

A Note of Caution

It has been noticed that some students are sending answers to Check Your Progress Exercises to the University for evaluation. Please do not send them to us. These exercises are given to help in judging your own progress. For this purpose, we have provided the answers to these exercises at the end of each Unit. We have already mentioned this in the Programme Guide.

The title of the course and assignment number have been written clearly. Each assignment on each course has been written on separate sheets and pinned properly. All the questions in the assignments have been answered.

Now read the guidelines before answering questions.

GUIDELINES FOR TMA

The Tutor Marked Assignments have three parts.

Section A: Short Answer Questions (SAQ) (40 marks)

In this section, you have to answer ten short questions (of 4 marks each). Answer each question in about 100 to 150 words.

Section B: Application Questions (AQ) (40 marks)

This section consists of questions where you have to apply knowledge you have gained in real-life situations.

In these questions you have to think and explain certain applications of theoretical principles and concepts.

Section C: Objective Type Questions (OTQ) (20 marks)

This section contains various types of objective questions.

GUIDELINES FOR TPAs

Assignments 3,6 and 9 are based on Practical Manuals 1,2,3 respectively. Assignment 3 carries specific questions based on your study of Practical Manual 1. Assignments 6 and 9 are based on Practical Manuals 2 and 3 respectively. You would be required to submit your responses to activities given in Practical Manuals 2 and 3 respectively for Assignments 6 and 9. You have been asked to complete five activities from each of these manuals. You have to submit responses to any four in each case.

POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND

You will find it useful to keep the following points in mind:

1) Planning: Read the assignments carefully. Go through the units on which they are based. Make some points regarding each question and then rearrange these in a logical order.

2) Organization: Be a little more selective and analytical. Give attention to your introduction and conclusion. The introduction must offer your brief interpretation of the question and how you propose to develop it. The conclusion must summarize your response to the question.

Make sure that your answer:

a) is logical and coherentb) has clear connections between sentences and paragraphsc) is written correctly giving adequate consideration to your expression, style and

presentationd) does not exceed the number of words indicated in the question.

3) Presentations: Once you are satisfied with your answers, you can write down the final version for submission, writing each answer neatly and underline the points you wish to emphasize.

2. What do you understand by “action, interaction and balance” between nutrients?

3. Differentiate between available and non-available carbohydrates giving examples.

4. List the Vitamins of the B Complex group giving one major function of each.

5. What is the concept of a balanced diet?

6. List the points to remember about supplementary feeding of infants.

7. What specific pattern should be kept in mind in planning diets for adolescent girls?

8. Which nutrients are of particular importance in pregnancy? Give reasons in brief

9. How are RDIs for adults influenced by age?

10. What is the role of sodium and potassium in the body?

Section B: Application Questions (40 Marks)

There are two questions in this part. Answer both.

1. Cut out any five advertisements for food products from a newspaper. Stick the newspaper cuttings on your assignment sheet and comment on each of them. Do you agree with the claims made in each advertisement based on nutritional considerations? (25 marks)

2. Interview your grandparents regarding their views on the changes in meal patterns over the past decade. Identify any five trends they have noticed. Does this agree with your parent’s views? Discuss. (15 marks)

3. Collect samples of drinking water from your locality in clean glasses. Compare the colour, smell, extent of suspended matter/floating particles. Give your comments in the form of a table.

activities. Hence describe methods/ aids/ techniques/ responses etc., in as much detail as possible where asked.

c) Answer questions noting down all relevant points. Use lists, diagrams, flow charts to give a clearer idea of what you are trying to put across.

2. Comment in detail on the problems or difficulties/ successes/ interesting points that emerged as you performed the activities in a community setting. 1. Design and develop an educational game to impart message related to eating balanced diet among school children.

Guidelines:- Prepare a sample of the game on paper.- Write the procedure for playing the game and submit. (20 marks)

2. Suggest two ways in which women-to-women strategy could be used to spread messages related to prevention of anaemia among pregnant women. Write the procedure briefly.

This assignment is based on Practical Manual 3.

You were asked to attempt five out of eight activities in Practical Manual-3. Submit your responses to any four out of the five you have completed. In addition comment on the problems/ successes/ interesting points that emerged as you performed the activities in a community setting.

Guidelines

i) 80 marks are allotted for the answers to the questions mentioned in the activities. Note down all relevant points. Use lists, diagrams, flow charts to give a clearer idea of what you are trying to put across.

ii) 20 marks have been allotted for your comments on the problems/ success/ interesting points noted during your work in a community. Make notes on all four activities submitted. Also indicate whether you undertook other activities in addition to those asked. If so, give details.
