2 Introduction to DN 2 Manager

This chapter introduces DN 2 Manager, its main functions and the system

requirements it sets on your computer.

The DN 2 Manager program provides an easy-to-use interface for managing the

cross-connections and settings of Nokia's DN 2 Dynamic Node Equipment. DN

2 Manager runs on a PC-compatible computer under Windows NT Workstation,Windows NT Terminal Server, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows

XP.

DN 2 nodes can also be managed by using the Service Terminal or Service

Terminal Emulator program which also runs on a PC-compatible computer

under Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Terminal Server, Windows

2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP.

2.1 Node manager system architecture

DN 2Manager is an NMS/10 -compatible management product. All the

NMS/10- compatible node managers can operate at the same time on the same

standard PC. NMS/10 supports awide range of node managers using different

communications software to manage different kinds of equipment.

2.2 General features

DN 2 Manager has been especially designed to manage the DN 2 Dynamic

Node Equipment. Its main function is to facilitate the creating and editing of

crossconnections in a node.

DN 2 Manager can manage one node or file at a time either in quick start-up or

normal mode.

The main functions you may perform using DN 2 Manager are the following:

•   bring a new DN 2 node into use

•  add and remove units

•  connect to and communicate with a DN 2 node currently operating on a

network

•  set synchronisation settings

•  create and edit cross-connection tables and conditions

•  reconfigure the cross-connections and equipment configuration of a DN 2

node to modify its function in the network

•  manage node files

•  import and export data between a DN 2 node and a file to copy settings

from one unit, or node, to another

•  read status information and statistics from a DN 2 node, including

information on any alarms that have been generated on the nodes

•  monitor alarms

•  set on controls on the node

•   perform tests

•  configure DYNACARD products with a Macro Service Terminal

Emulator (separate products)

•   poll through the service bus addresses and list the equipment found on the

screen.

2.2.1 About cross-connection tables and conditions

The cross-connections in the DN 2 are arranged in cross-connection tables. A

table contains a set of cross-connections that can be operated as one object.

Several tables may be defined for each equipment and, although they can be

combined (see below), the basic rule is that only one table is active at a time

and, therefore, cross-connections are shown one table at a time on the DN 2

Manager display.

Individual cross-connections and whole tables can be set conditional, so that a

table is activated automatically as a response to a trigger (for example, a fault)

in the transmission network.

Tables may be combined. This feature is especially useful with conditional

tables, since usually only some of the cross-connections need to be changed because of a fault. The fixed cross-connections can be defined in an

unconditional table and the modifiable ones in conditional tables, each of which

is combined with an unconditional table. When any of the conditional tables is

activated, the fixed cross-connections become active as well.

2.2.2 Compatibility with DN 2 nodes

DN 2 Manager C5.4 can be used for controlling the DN 2 CU SW versions

03A, 04A, 05A, 06A, 07B, 07C, and IU2 SWversions 03A, 04A, 05A, 06A,

07B, 07C, and 07D (also SW version 02A for both units, with restrictionsmentioned in Appendix A). After DN 2 Manager has been installed, a DN 2

Manager Read Me icon will appear in the DN 2 program group. DN 2 Manager

Read Me provides information on the compatibility between DN 2 Manager and

DN 2 equipment software.

2.2.3 DYNACARD support

DYNACARDunits are managed by using the D-card Manager and/or Macro

STE program. When you want to change or copy the settings of a DYNACARD

unit, D-card Manager is started automatically for supported units. If it is notavailable or a unit is not supported, Macro STE (Service Terminal Emulator) is

started.

D-Card Manager C1.2 and Macro STE are not included in the DN 2 Manager

program but must be purchased separately.

2.3 User interface

DN 2Manager serves as a simple-to-use interface between the user and the DN

2 node, and provides a graphical presentation of the equipment being managed.

The user interface is realised by an application window known as DN 2

Manager window. This window contains all the other windows which display

different views of the node being managed. The different windows are:

•  Equipment View

•  Ports View

•  Connection Tables View

•  Connections View

•  Graphical Connections View

•  Conditions View

Page 14: Dn 2 User Manual

•  Alarms View

•  DYNACARD Bus Time Slot Allocation View.

All equipment settings (such as unit configuration or port settings) are sent to

the equipment immediately when the dialog box is closed. Cross-connectiontables, connections and the related conditions are edited in the Manager and

have to be sent with a separate command to the node. The correctness of the

settings is checked in the respective dialogs. Sending of incorrect information is

either prevented or a warning is given in a message box.

It is also possible to configure a virtual node. This means that there is no

connection to the actual node but the configuration is saved on the disk of the

PC. This way the configuration can be done beforehand and sent later from the

file to the node.

DN 2 Manager also provides on-line help on the use of the Manager software.

2.3.1 Cross-connections

The DN 2 allows the use of the following cross-connection types:

•  Ordinary through-connections (B-type)

•  Digital common channels (C-type)

•  Fixed data (D-type)

•  Protection switch (Y-type).

Connections of types B, C, and D can also be defined as conditional.

A separate mask connection (M-type) is not available, but can be defined as a

part of the connection types mentioned above.

A more detailed description of the cross-connection types can be found in the

DN 2 Operating Handbook, part 'Functional Description'. On the display,

different types can be identified by respective character symbols.

The cross-connection tables are presented in the Connections View window.

Figure 3. Connections View window

Alternatively, cross-connections can also be presented in the Graphical

Connections View window (Figure 4). The graphical mode is practical when

you are defining the initial configuration of a network node or making major

changes in a node. This mode is also useful when getting acquainted with the

capabilities of the managed equipment. Minor changes are sometimes easier tomake in the normal Connections View window because its output is similar to a

cross connection table.

Figure 4. Graphical Connections View window

Tip

Because the DN 2 allows cross-connections on port (2M), time slot, or bit level,

each of these levels is shown on the display.

All levels appear symmetrically on the upper (Rx side) and lower (Tx side) half of the display as a bar, and the space between the bars represents the cross-

connection matrix.

Each square on the topmost (and lowest) bar represents one port. The unused

orts are greyed. Any of the ports may be selected and zoomed onto time slot

evel. Exactly the same way, one of the time slots may be zoomed onto bit level.

2.4 Security considerations

NodeDN 2 nodes can be protected against unauthorised access with a password or by

equiring the PIN signal to be grounded in the service terminal connector P1 of

the CU (see the DN 2 Operating Handbook). When the password protection has

been activated on a node, you must give the correct password via the Manager

to get privileges. When the PIN protection is in use, ground first the PIN and

after that select Local PIN Ground in the Configure → Acquire User

Privileges... menu.

During extended Node Manager sessions we recommend that you use a long

time-out, check the Remember Password option in the Options menu or

temporarily remove the node protection to avoid unnecessary interruptions

cused by protection time-outs.

Manager security

The security of Node Manager can be enhanced by using Windows NT

Workstation user groups and directory level security. With NTFS, authorisation

to Node Manager files and directories can be granted either to user groups or

single users with different levels of granularity.

By using the Windows NT Workstation security system, all unauthorised access

to protected Node Manager files can be effectively prevented. This includes

possible attempts to boot the computer with an alternative operating system or

to write hostile software to read out the Node Manager files and directories. If

access through a computer network is a threat, the network files to be protected

can be placed into a Windows NT Workstation file server.

Tip

Keep the Node Manager installation CD-ROM and this DN 2 Node ManagerUser's Manual in a safe place in order to prevent unauthorised access to any DN

2 nodes and unauthorised use of the DN 2 Node Manager program.

2.5 System requirements

This section describes the hardware and software requirements of the computer

for running DN 2 Manager.

•  Personal computer with a Pentium processor

4 Getting started

This chapter explains the principles of operating DN 2 Manager: how to start

the Manager program, access the managed equipment, and exit the program.

Also the use of DN 2 Manager Help is described.

This chapter assumes that:

•  DN 2 Manager is installed on your computer. (For installationinstructions, see Chapter 3, 'Installing DN 2 Manager'.)

•  The settings of the COM2 port you are using to communicate with the

DN 2 node are:

Baud rate: 9600

5.1 Installing a new DN 2 node

Installation of a node means setting up a completely new node so that it can be

used on a network for data transmission.

Before starting the installation, prepare a network level plan that includes the

network structure, the node types and their Q1 addresses. Within each node,

plan the types and slots of the plug-in units.

The default speed of the DN 2 PC Interface is 4800.

Tip

It is recommended that the Install All Units option in the Install Unit dialog

box is used only when the entire node is taken into use for the very first time.

To take a new DN 2 node into use:

1.  Connect to the node by choosing the Manage→ Connect... menu item.

(See Section 4.3, Accessing the managed nodefor detailed instructions.)

2.  Give the Configure→Add Units menu command. Choose the Install All

Units option in the Install Unit dialog box to include all equipped units in

the equipment configuration. The installation data of the entire

configuration is read from the node to DN 2 Manager.

3.  Check that you have given an address and necessary identifications for

the node and that the data hybrid settings are correct. For further information, refer to the DN 2 Operating Handbook, part 'Operation'.

To take a new DN 2 node into use with saved configuration file:

If you are installing several nodes with almost similar settings, you can use the

backup file of the first node as a starting point for the configuration of the other

DN 2 nodes.

1.  Connect directly to the new node with the common address (4095) andinstall all units as described in the previous section.

2.  Open a backup file by giving the Manage → Restore... menu command.

3.  This brings up the Restore File dialog box (Figure 10) where you can

choose the name of the backup file you want to use as a configuration

file. Click Open to send the configuration to the node.

5.2 Adding a new unit to an existing node

This section contains information on how to install DN 2 units in the node.

To install a new unit, when connected to a node:

1.  Make sure that the units to be installed have been properly inserted in the

subrack.

2.  You may use the saved unit dump of an existing, similar type of unit as a

starting point for the settings of the new unit.

3.  In the Equipment View window, click a slot and choose the menu

command Configure → Add Units... or double-click a slot. The Install

Unit dialog box (Figure 11) appears.

By default, the slot number you clicked is selected in the Free Slots list box.

This is a multiple selection list, so you can choose several new units at the same

time as long as they are of the same type.

Note

Do not use the option Install All Units to add a single unit because this

command will reallocate all time slots. The command is intended to be used

only when an entire DN 2 equipment is taken into use for the very first time.

4.  Click the Send button to add the selected unit(s) to the Equipment View

window. The dialog box does not close until you click the Close button,

so you can install several new units of different type without closing thedialog box.

As a default, the slot number you clicked is selected in the Free Slots list box.

This is a multiple selection list, so you can choose several new units at the same

time as long as they are of the same type.

Since you are working off-line, you need to specify the Unit Type, Hardware

Unit Id, and Program Id manually for each new unit. You can find the Id

information in your DN 2 user manuals. (For example, for an IU2 the HardwareUnit Id could be CU24101.00 04A and Program Id CS24160 07C.) This Id

information is used by the DYNACARD manager software package, so if you

are not using that, you may leave the Id fields empty.

Click the Send button to add the selected unit(s) to the Equipment View

window. The dialog box does not close until you click the Close button, so you

can install several new units of different type without closing the dialog box.

5.3 Removing a unit from an existing node

This section contains information on how to remove units from a node or a file.

To remove a unit from a node, when connected to a node or a file:

1.  Select from the subrack picture of the Equipment View window the unit

slot from which a unit should be removed.

2.  Choose Configure → Remove Unit.

5.4 Navigating in the Graphical Connections Viewwindow

Figure 12. Graphical Connections View window

The separator after every second port indicates the unit boundary. The IU2 units

(consisting of two 2 Mbit/s ports) are indicated with port numbers. Boxeswithout port numbers denote that either the unit location is empty or the unit in

the location cannot contain cross-connections (for example, CU or

DYNACARD).

Tip

Cross-connections may be created in unit locations which have an IU2 unit

installed, because the connections are valid only if there is an IU2 unit in that

 particular location.

The cross-connection matrix is the area between the upper and the lower

resource. Unidirectional connections are displayed with a dashed line and bidirectional connections with a solid line. The master direction is denoted with

white text on grey background. Connection lines in the activated tables are

5.6 Creating cross-connections

You can find the most frequently needed Tables menu commands in the pop-up

menu by clicking the right mouse button. For more information about usingthese commands, see Section 6.25.4, Tables menu.

The connection types can also be selected in the Tables → Add Connection...

menu or by clicking the appropriate toolbar buttons.

As an example, a bidirectional time slot level through-connection (B2-

connection) is created to a cross-connection table. (The various connection

types are described in more detail in Chapter 6, Reference, Sections 6.28, 6.29,

6.31, and 6.32 and in the DN 2 Operating Handbook.) The resources in the

connection to be created are the following: the Tx/Rx-resource is time slot 1 in

port 1 and the Rx/Tx-resource is time slot 2 in port 2.

To create a cross-connection:

1.  Select the resources in the working area as specified above. Click the

right mouse button and select the Add B-connection command on the

pop-up menu to display the Add B-Connection dialog box (see Figure

20).

Tip

The port and time slot text boxes are prefilled according to the selections made

in the working area. If you wish to give a name to the connection, continue from

step 2, otherwise go directly to step 4.2.  Click the Name text box in the Properties field.

3.  Type in a name for the connection.

4.  Click the OK button. The cross-connection created will appear in the

working area.

One cross-connection has now been created to a cross-connection table. Other

cross-connections to the same table can be created exactly the same way.

Note that unlike other settings, the cross-connections are not automatically sent

to a node when you close the dialog box but need to be sent with a separate

command (see Section 5.8).

5.7 Creating conditions

Conditions can be created either by clicking the Add Cond... button in the Edit

Connection dialog boxes or by giving the Tables → Add Condition... menu

command.

the Rx-port button.

11.  Click the OK button. The condition number 150 has been created and it is

true, when bit number 8 in time slot 10 of the incoming signal in port 10

is equal to 1. The added condition will appear in the Condition list box in

the Edit B-Connection dialog box and can now be attached to a

connection.

5.8 Sending cross-connections to a node

The cross-connections and conditions created above exist in the DN 2 Manager

memory only. The new cross-connections are not applied to a node until you

separately send them to the node.

To send a cross-connection table to a node:

1.  Choose the Manage→Send Tables... menu command. The Select Ports

dialog box appears and allows you to control to which ports you want tosend the new table.

Note that Select ports dialog box will be displayed only if you have

selected the Enable Port Selection when sending Cross-Connections

option in the Manager Options dialog box.

2.  If you want to send the table to all ports, choose the All option. If you

want to send the table to those ports only that need to be updated, choose

the Changed option.

Condition TypeSpecifies the type of the condition.

A Common condition is active for all ports. It is provided with a unique

condition number from 101 to 164. It can be used in cross-connections and

cross connection tables.

A Port condition is specific only to one port which is defined in the Tx Port

field. The port condition number (2...64) is unique for the given Tx-port; that is,

the same port condition number can be used for different Tx-ports.

Tip

When adding a condition to a cross-connection, the Tx port must be the same

for the condition and the cross-connection.

Number

Shows the Id-number identifying the condition. Manager proposes a number

which is the smallest free common condition number, but you may change the

proposed number. The even condition numbers have higher priority than the

odd numbers.

Some of the condition numbers have been predefined:

•   Numbers 0 and 1 are reserved for the pilot channel.

•   Number 254 is reserved for the always false condition.

•   Number 255 is reserved for the always true condition.

Definition Type

Specifies the condition that has to be met.

Bit Condition observes the polarity of a bit as defined in the True When field.

The condition is true when the polarity of the bit in the incoming signal is the

same as in the condition definition.

Port State Condition observes the fault state (serious fault or not serious fault)

of one 2M signal. The condition is true when no serious faults are detected.

True When

Specifies the true polarity value for the condition. This field is only enabled

when the Definition Type has been set as Bit Condition.

Bit = 1 indicates that the condition is true when the selected Rx bit is 1.

Bit = 0 indicates that the condition is true when the selected Rx bit is 0.

related to the tables and cross-connections by clicking the right mouse button.

6.15 Connection Tables View window

This window provides an overview of the cross-connection tables of the

managed node or file. A table is a group of connections that need to be active at

the same time and share a common table number. There are unconditional and

conditional tables. You may define conditions for a conditional table.

The tables are also classified by number as follows:

•  1...9, 19, 30...39 are unconditional

10...18, 20...28 are conditionalSome of the tables have special purposes:

•  Tables 9 and 19 are test tables that can be used for testing temporary

connections.

•  Table 29 contains common conditions and table conditions.

•  Table 30 contains the connections that are always active when the

activated table number is smaller than 32.

•  Table 31 is an idle table and specifies the bits transmitted in the

undefined time slot bits.

•  Tables 32 to 39 are fixed tables that cannot be modified. These are usedfor production testing purposes only.

Conditional tables have a priority which depends on the number of the table (the

lower the number, the higher the priority). If one of the conditional tables is

activated (for example 13), the table actually activated is the one (in group

13...18) with the highest priority whose conditions give the value 'true' (for

6.42 Install Unit dialog box

In this dialog box, you can add new units into the node installation.

The dialog box opens when you choose the Configure→ Add Units... menu

item.

If you are managing a node, make sure that the units to be added to the

installation have been inserted in the subrack. Adding units actually causes the

DN 2 CU to check the requested unit locations for unit identification

information. The actual types of the units are read from the node itself and thus

you cannot modify them.

If you are managing a file, you must also give the type of the unit to be

installed.

Glossary

activated table Activated Table in a node refers to the table that has been requested to be active

in the node. If the table is unconditional, it is also the active table. If the table is

conditional, the condition determines whether the table is active or not.active table The term Active Table refers to the table that has been selected in the DN 2

node.

If the table is unconditional, it is also the used table.

If the table is conditional, it depends on the table condition whether the table is

in use or not. The number of the active table in the cross-connection dump does

not therefore necessarily refer to the table that is actually in use. Use the Tables

→ Show Active Table Number menu command to find out the table in use in

the DN 2 node.

cross-connection A connection defined in one connection command. The levels available are

port, time slot, half time slot, and bit level.

cross-connection

dump

Cross-connection tables, the protecting port for each port, conditions, table

conditions (if any created), and the number of the active table currently in the

working space are saved into the equipment in dump mode. The dump mode is

also used in the communication betweenDN 2Manager and the equipment. In

the dump mode the data is compressed to save the memory capacity of the

equipment
